No matter what song he does or who he does it with, (Willie, Trey, Carlos Santana, Dickie Betts, Del McCourry etc, etc etc,)Billy Strings never seems out of place or context. He is dialed in to the right things in music. Pop music will come and go, but you will be listening to this guy 40 years from now. He is a timeless talent with mad respect for who came before him.
He stole this old hippie’s heart with his mastery of all the old school rock’n’roll. The Dead, Allmans, Hendrix, et. al. Then I found out he was a scholar of all the best bluegrass stars of the 20th century.
Aa a fellow proud Canuck: agreed - This song was a profound part of the sonic background of my teen years. It gave rise to a prominent American person stating that "the best storyteller in America is a Canadian" and I feel like Strings has done justice to the song and the artist.
“All that remains is the faces and names of the wives and the sons and the daughters.” Is there a sadder line in all of music? Breaks my heart every time.
Minnesota local here. Thank you for representing for the Edmund F Billy!! My grandpa worked in the iron mines so a lot of Minnesotans have a lot of pride for the Edmund fitz and the iron trade and boating part of our town in Lake Superior. Billy has the best covers man I love this.
The Fitz normally stopped at a mill in Silver Bay, Minn., but on this particular day, picked up its load at the Burlington Northern Railroad Dock No. 1 in Superior, Wisconsin, so use of the word "mill" in the song is probably erroneous. Also, while most of the lost crew were from Ohio (14) and Wisconsin (8), two were from Minnesota.
Well done.... listening to it when played by Gordon Lightfoot gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes, Strings playing it does the same, well done
Billy is incredible. He uses a bluegrass band to cover a song no one else would have thought could be done with a fiddle, banjo, and mandolin. And it's great!!
Gords performance of this song with hos band is one of the most bone chilling emotional musical performances of all time. I saw him do it live many times. Cheers for honoring such a giant!
I grew up on the the Lake Michigan shore line watching these ships pass by the sleeping bear dunes on there way north or south. This song means so much to me.
Sleeping bear dunes, and pretty much the entire Lake Michigan coastline (on the Michigan side, of course) is awesome.... I'd say some of the beaches can run with the best of them....
Greetings from Duluth. Thank you for persevering the importance of this story. The ore ships continue to come and go from our port at the Head Of The Lake. Billy, Keep doing what you are doing.
I remember hearing this in the mid 70’s and I had the most weird feeling come over me,goosebumps, tingle up and down my spine,it almost made you feel horrified for the people who were lost in the wreck
This song is one of those that you always have to finish once started. Always. It is personally, a song that connects me to the Upper Peninsula. Growing up watching the iron ore ships go by just about every day and then spending over 20 years at sea just deepens the appreciation for what the men and women of the Great Lakes Fleet sacrifice. Great job Billy!
Wow! Just stumbled on this, and amazed they covered this song with fiddle and banjo! We had same idea, and released vid, thinking Punch Brothers were only ones that chose this style of arrangement! Billy and his group, what an amazing job well done! I'm a fan!
Seen this was played on the YT Europe doc today. Finally sat down to search on TH-cam & Ian Gibbons comes thru! 💕 Billy, like Gordon, made me tear up. Fellow Michiganian here. ☮️
Agree 1000%. I saw someone comment they're just covering the song as opposed to making it their own....like the Punch Brothers did... I disagree--the fiddle fills the slide parts and it's a major part of why this is such an awesome rendition...and the banjo helps a lot too.
I have heard Many musicians perform Gordons music , but this is by far the best . Thank you for keeping it to its origin , because the origin and artistry of Gordins creation in song is not only the reason for its success , but also for the homage to those lost .
I am a Yooper and live really close to where the Edmund Fitzgerald went down on the shores of the Gitch. Huge props to Billy for playing this on the anniversary of this tragedy. Every 10th if November I lay tobacco on the shore of the Gitch for the souls that she holds in her belly.
I was born and raised not far from where she sank. This legend lives on thanks to Lightfoot's lyrics and incredible musical talents. Billy would hvae know all the stories growing up, Traverse City being close to many great bodies of water. Thanks Billy !! best,, as always !
Every time I watch this, I'm impressed with Billy's voice. I know he's a master guitar picker, but I think he sings this well too. I'm sure it's not an easy song to sing.
And he sings it with Lightfoot's Ontario accent too. Listen to how he pronounces "Detroit" in this song - he says it in three syllables: "De-TROY-it" exactly like Ontario Canadians do. Only someone who's listened carefully to this song would pick that phrasing up. Also, I think Billy's voice is changing. And for the better. His tone is getting deeper, stretching back into the bass-baritone range. It's a solid and expressive voice. It's fun to hear him grow into his talent over time. He is a remarkably talented artist.
That's an amazing covet. Was a kid when she went down, remember Walter Cronkite tell about it on the news. I was up in Michigan in 2021 and saw the Arthur Andersen come into Port. Have followed this story all my life..... Damn fine cover !!!

Wise words
Agreed❤
TRUTH!
indeed sir he is a once in a lifetime musical talent..."Home" is one of the best albums my ears have ever listened to
He stole this old hippie’s heart with his mastery of all the old school rock’n’roll. The Dead, Allmans, Hendrix, et. al. Then I found out he was a scholar of all the best bluegrass stars of the 20th century.
Don’t forget that Billy is a Michigander by birth. The Edmond Fitzgerald is in the bones of every Lakeperson.
Which is why i wonder why it took them this long to cover it.
@@CorneiliusLibowitzsame. This song sound amazing in a string configuration and fits the bluegrass style well
@@ScharfSchutzen Hargreaves' fiddle really makes this version...He's playing the slide parts and it's pretty great....it's what makes it their own.
@@CorneiliusLibowitz Maybe he felt compelled to play the song on 11/10 as a tribute to the crew of the Fitz...
I was wondering why he would play this song. And yes we were taught at a young age about this wreck. I was born and raised in the U.P.
As a Canadian who knew and Loved Gordon Lightfoot, I approve this rendition.
Thank you Billy.
Couldn't have said it any better, though I tried!
I second that 🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸
Aa a fellow proud Canuck: agreed - This song was a profound part of the sonic background of my teen years. It gave rise to a prominent American person stating that "the best storyteller in America is a Canadian" and I feel like Strings has done justice to the song and the artist.
I am always struck by the haunting guitar of the original, but the violin makes the part even more touching. Eyes leaking... gotta go.
I was going through new artists for me and couldn’t believe it when I heard it!! He did damn good!!!
"Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours" is one of the most gut-wrenching song lyrics ever written.
The last line of that same verse too
“And all that remains is the faces and the names of the wives and the sons and the daughters.”
agreed.@@timmiller1
I couldnt agree more! And as far as synchronicity goes, I read this comment just as he sang it
"Fellas it's been good to know ya"...
Only Gordon could have written those thoughtful words. Yes, I'm a huge fan
Thank you my family are all from Michigan and my uncle died on the Edmond I appreciate you for doing justice to his memory.
🙏
Punch Brothers do a great version of this song to,if you haven't seen it.Sorry for the loss of your uncle,RIP🙏
🙏
“All that remains is the faces and names of the wives and the sons and the daughters.” Is there a sadder line in all of music? Breaks my heart every time.
The song alone is a masterpiece. He did it justice.

What a great tribute to an iconic Canadian song by a genius American performer!
Couldnt believe it when i heard the first few notes. One of my favorite songs being done by my favorite musician.
same here. I didn't have a clue what a pleasure to find
I've been waiting a long time to see them cover this song. They did an excellent job.
Same, love this guy and love this tune
best story ever told in song.
My dad showed me this song and I’ll never forget that moment
I just love to listen to Billy sing. He does not need fancy guitar playing to steal my heart ❤️
A Michigander taking up the song about the Edmund Fitzgerald. Well done, Billy. And a great rendition...
Well done.... listening to it when played by Gordon Lightfoot gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes, Strings playing it does the same, well done
Billy, your covers are the best😀
Billy is incredible. He uses a bluegrass band to cover a song no one else would have thought could be done with a fiddle, banjo, and mandolin. And it's great!!
I'm not sure I've heard it any other way, and if I have, I now forget it.
One of the greatest songs ever written played by one of the greatest guitarist ever to play. Well done Billy.
Billy never disappoints.
Beautiful voice
Brought tears Billy.....

Too bad you can barely hear this song maybe make it louder so people can hear it
Thanks for sharing this Gordon Lightfoot classic...Billy did it well
Beautiful rendition! I have loved this sad song since I was a little girl, and I still have my parents' old 45 record.
Greetings from Duluth. Thank you for persevering the importance of this story. The ore ships continue to come and go from our port at the Head Of The Lake. Billy, Keep doing what you are doing.

This song came out when I was in high school. It was on the radio all the time never got tired of it.
I remember when it happened and then the song!
This is an epic song. A masterwork. Gordon Effin' Lightfoot.
This song is one of those that you always have to finish once started. Always. It is personally, a song that connects me to the Upper Peninsula. There is just no words too say how good he is.
This song is one of those when you start playing it you gotta finish the whole song! Amazing!
One of the best stories ever sung❤ billy did gordon an all those sailers a good tribute here😢 bravo
Holy shit!!!!!! 🌟 That's the most poignantly beautiful thing I've ever heard....
I would have shit down one pant leg and up another if I heard Billy play this live! Favorite song, favorite artist. Gordon Lightfoot is in the 10 ten.
Total iconic event enshrined by an iconic song writer done by a new iconic artist. Doesn't get much better!
One of my favourite songs of all time , thanks Billy !
Loved this song since childhood
Well done, and a fine tune to show off the addition of Hargreaves on violin.
Sends chills up and down my spine. Thanks Billy
I’m so happy this popped up in my feed. Great version.
Wow! Just stumbled on this, and amazed they covered this song with fiddle and banjo! We had same idea, and released vid, thinking Punch Brothers were only ones that chose this style of arrangement! Billy and his group, what an amazing job well done! I'm a fan!
Think that Mr Lightfoot would highly approve
Simply excellent!!!
Most accomplished musician I've ever heard! He's a treasure!
I love how Billy and his awesome band cover these incredible songs very few do. His Blaze Foley covers are amazing.
The hair on my arms are standing. Outstanding!!!
Peace to those who died and those they left behind.
Miss you in TC Billy❤
Growing up a huge Grateful dead fan. I also was a Gordon Lightfoot fan and seen him sing. This is outstanding.
He makes me smile and dance and well up with emotion in everything he plays and sings. Absolute gifts he has. I feel so lucky.
Billy, well done singing this on the anniversary of that tragedy!
What a wonderful rendition. Love you Billy
Goosebumps...over my whole body. God, I would have loved to have been there...good for you!
Well done Billy!! What a great tribute to Gordon Lightfoot, and of course the memory of those that lost their lives on the Edmund Fitzgerald.😊💜💜
This song is hauntingly great.
Respectful, thoughtful, and better than the average cover……by anyone!
The greatest ballad ever written. What a treat to find Billy's cover. Excellent!

Billy, like Gordon, made me tear up. Fellow Michiganian here. ☮️
Bravo Billy from a Cleveland longshoreman come back soon. Great work guys ❤❤❤ so happy for you're success love ya boyo
Well done! It’s tougher than you’d think. Tony Rice’s version is my favorite cover. But Billy does a great job.
This was done very well, but i always enjoyed the powerful drums from the original!
Outstanding!!!
Hargraves adds so much to this song! Love it, thank you
Every song
Agree 1000%. I saw someone comment they're just covering the song as opposed to making it their own....like the Punch Brothers did... I disagree--the fiddle fills the slide parts and it's a major part of why this is such an awesome rendition...and the banjo helps a lot too.
That was fantastically done! Thank you for posting this up! ❤️🩹

Nice version of a great song. Thanks for the post.
Very nice ❤
Billy is The Kid!! Such an incredible talent!!

Truly being dying to hear him play this song, I love Tony Rice’s version so much and always imagined him playing this just as so! 🥹❤
A good tribute to one of the kings of folk music,
I would like to see this in a high-production video-recording. In the meantime, this is great.
Thanks for sharing this gem!
Beautifully done!
Bravo Billy. Great job. RIP Gordon.
Awesome. My favorite “new” artist.

Violin/fiddle is eerie, and beautiful.
It what really makes this performance, and essentially makes it their own....
Gordon Lightfoot lives on through the next generation. Thanks guys❤❤❤❤❤
Holy shit, i love you guys. RIP Gordon.✌️
Billy .Yes keep it coming
Thanks for uploading this! It's very fitting they played in on 10Nov.
I was born and raised not far from where she sank. This legend lives on thanks to Lightfoot's lyrics and incredible musical talents.
Billy would hvae know all the stories growing up, Traverse City being close to many great bodies of water.
Thanks Billy !!

I saw Tony play with this when I was a teenager ..with my father miss those days

And masterfully, he makes it sound inevitable.
I don`t know how this was recorded but the sound and mix are fantastic.
Breathtaking; Billy as usual nails it...
Been waiting for this to come along. Thank you!
Gordo would be pleased with Billy's rendition.
Thank you, Billy. Well done.
Try to remember half the words to that song. Now try to sing and play it on a stage in front of a few thousand people. Amazingly good!
Thank you ❤
A Legend covering a Legend
Great song.
Epic. RIP Gord.
That's an amazing covet. Was a kid when she went down, remember Walter Cronkite tell about it on the news. I was up in Michigan in 2021 and saw the Arthur Andersen come into Port. Have followed this story all my life..... Damn fine cover !!!
Wow very interesting!
RIP Gordon. This was a beautiful version of his classic.
