Necrotic Nick- The album has a very interesting flow to it and the singles worked in well to that. It's a dark, introspective journey of an album. I've jammed it multiple times now and it's really sticking with me. Maybe it's haunting me... lol
4 months later, the work has become my single favorite metal album of all time, I've never felt so many emotions listening to metal and every single track hits me perfectly when theyre put together in order
Broke my arm around the time when I bought this, so it was kind of a therapy album for me. Made me strong and made the time of solitude easier. So it became a lot more than just another metal album. Love it when albums become such strong memories
Great review boys. Two spins so far and I’m really digging it! The solo in Terrestria gave me chills the first time I heard it. Maybe One Day was such a pleasant surprise too
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Terrestria IV is flat out killer. I love how intense that song is. Maybe One Day has grown on me a bit more than the other softer tracks. It reminds me a lot of Devin Townsend's sort of playful softer material and I'm a sucker for stuff like that.
Listened to this album earlier today while mowing the yard. It’s definitely surprising. I hear some latter-years Katatonia, and one tune sounded like David Gilmour-fronted Pink Floyd. It’s a little wacky but I like it.
Necrotic Nick- Actually, going back it does have some sections that remind me of Katatonia and I got some big Pink Floyd vibes on this especially on the lead on Clean. Big Gilmore vibes on that one.
The last concert I went to in 2019, before life went fucking mental, was Thy Art Is Murder in Birmingham, UK. They had these guys on the bill (huge list-Carnifex, Fit For An Autopsy as well..). They were really cool live- worked really hard for third on the bill. As soon as they finished, the vocalist ran all the way to the merch booth and pumped out t shirts and talked to everyone.. Deserve any success that comes their way.
@@andrewbeaton6754 I think it was because they added to the bill and there's a curfew in place- show finishes at 11. I got down there relatively early but still missed first band. Got tickets for them in December in Bristol and Birmingham again. nearly two years since I last saw them, which was my last live show before lockdown(s)!
Necrotic Nick- The fist time I saw them was with Thy Art is Murder as well but it was with Dying Fetus as the headliner. They did a solid job but they kinda felt out of place on the bill. They had a killer set though.
@@thrallsofmetalDefinitely agree there Nick. Sandwiched between FFAA and Carnifex I think- who personify Deathcore in it's entirety. Suited TAIM's current shift into Behemoth and LoG tinged licks along with their brutal breakdowns and CJ's on stage banter. Thy Art have Malevolence and King 810 as main supports (two other bands as well I think who slip my mind) on the UK tour in December, so they're still mixing up the styles in bands on the road with them which can only be a good thing on the long run! \m/
4 stars is a good rating. On the first listen I realized it's pretty unique and I was interested but not feeling blown away. But then after some time passed I found myself thinking about it and feeling like listening to it again. The more I listened to it, the more I got it and appreciated it. I would also say 4 stars but after 5 listens, I could see this growing into a 4.5 or even a 5 with time. Something about it just feels like it's going to be memorable.
Necrotic Nick- This one is definitely growing me but I think a 4 still feels right. They did a good job not alienating their fanbase and they expanded their sound big time on this. The atmosphere and the themes of the album really stick with me. I'm still not a big fan of Wait for the reasons we brought up in the review but I still think it's cool that they explored some new sounds and just didn't try to write Where the Owls Know My Name pt. 2.
What these guys have done here is manage to make an album equally as awesome as Owls, just different...it's so true that Owls was a tough album to follow but they did an incredible job of surprising the shit out of everybody instead of making Owls two, which I'm sure they could do easily if they wanted to. This is definitely an album that works best as a whole and on repeated listen will haunt your dreams. I'll go so far as to say there are some musical geniuses at work here.
Necrotic Nick- While I like the album and I really love the fact that they just didn't do Owls pt. 2 I still think Owls is the superior album but these are very different albums. I'm glad they pushed for a broader sound and I like that I don't know what they'll do next because there's a lot of different avenues to explore after this one.
It looks like you guys are going to be reviewing a new rivers of nihil soon because they just dropped a new single this year I’m listening to it right now on Spotify
Love what I’ve heard so far. I was taken aback a bit also, by “wait” until I remembered how a comparison I made with the last album. To me, these guys are like the death metal/Metalcore version of Pink Floyd. I get so many Floyd vibes listening to these last two albums. When I think of it that way the strange transitions and song placements make more sense to my brain. It really is best taken in as a whole much like Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, or Animals. Love it. You guys rock!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I think was definitely a hard push for more atmosphere and even melody to some extent. It definitely has the feel of a Pink Floyd in terms of the some of the atmosphere and how the tracks flow into one another for sure. It's a strange, unsettling listen but I've been really getting into it.
Love your channel guys. The enthusiasm is amazing and the chemistry between all you guys is infectious! I was just wondering if you guys will be covering other extreme music? There is a gap in the market at the moment what the Terrorizer magazine used to cover. Groups like Swans and Killing Joke have made a huge impact on the metal scene, while the noise and industrial genre (Throbbing Gristle and Whitehouse) is very interesting, even experimental electronic groups and artists like Aphex Twin, Autechre and Pansonic are named dropped by groups like Dream Theatre, Dillinger Escape Plan and many one man Black Metal acts like Blut Aus Nord, Gnaw There Tongues, etc? Anyway keep up the good work!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I really appreciate that. We try to make our material as fun and engaging as possible. I've covered some hardcore, industrial and more fringe heavy stuff before in collection update. I'm a giant Killing Joke fanboy too. It kinda just depends on what I find when I'm hitting up record stores but I do like to pepper stuff in like that every not and then.
Necrotic Nick- I've seen Rivers of Nihil 3 times and they've been killer each time. I'm looking forward to seeing this tour when it hits Cleveland this coming Sunday.
@@thrallsofmetal they were really good man. Undeath was the opener and wasn't given a whole lot of time but they were really fucking good too, may have been my favorite group there.
I've just listened to it on a good car drive. I'm interested in seeing if anyone agrees with a couple of observations? Track 1 (minus the heavy parts) could have been Elton John around the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road era and track 10, wouldn't have been out of place on a Devin Townsend album ten years ago.
Necrotic Nick- Actually, I can hear that a bit especially the Devin Townsend aspects on Maybe One Day. I've jammed this quite few times now and it's a very engaging but odd listen. I keep going back to Where the Owls Know My Name just to compare the two and I really like that they're very different albums.
@@thrallsofmetal - Personally I didnt find a track I didnt like, but I also feel it might be one of those albums you listen to as an entirety. Track 11 was maybe the closest to something from Owls to my ear, but I'm far from unhappy with the product.
this album was incredible and episode was the best track imo it was soo good transitioning between all the sections, super heavy and when the solo was in the background it was such an incredbile atomosphere then the sax after that soo good
Necrotic Nick- I really dig it an Episode, The Void From Which No Sound Escapes, Clean and Terrestria are easily some of my favorite new tracks on it. They really committed to the sax more on it and it still just flat out works again.
I thought this album was fantastic. I'm glad they fully committed to their experimentation instead of holding back. Bands should make the record they want to make, not take a half step here and another there. Yeah, there's some aspects I like more than others, but honestly I got more surprising elements than I thought I would based on the singles. Everything is done so well, I can't wait to hear what they do next. Divisive as it may prove to be, this album proves that Rivers of Nihil is not going to get stuck in their own mold, and they're not going to lose their distinctiveness in the milieu of an oversaturated genre. Bravo!
Necrotic Nick- I think it's a damn good album and honestly one of the things I love about is the experimentation. While I think Wait might of been a push too far for me I still like the fact that they were willing to push the band's sound in some different directions. I liked the singles but I think most of the tracks that weren't singles even more. It's going to be interesting to see how this one go over with the fanbase over time. It is a very different album but I think they're pushing in the right direction.
You should review the new album from Volbeat, entitled Servant of the Mind, when it drops on December 3rd. They are also touring with Ghost this winter and they're coming to Toledo February 15th!
I thought it was a very good point with it could feel like there was an album in between this an owls to get used to where it’s going. I’ve listened to it a lot over the last couple of weeks and I think it’s an excellent album overall but I can see why people might not like it as much or struggle to see how far away from previous albums they’ve gone. I’m glad they didn’t just repeat what they’ve done they’ve shown they can straight tech death, progressive death and now atmospheric / prog metal they are an incredibly talented band certainly a lot of diversity to enjoy in this album.
Necrotic Nick- This one continues to grow on me. I like it but I would have liked a more intermediate step between this and Where the Owls Known My Name but I still really dig the dark, emotional vibe on this one. Clean's doomy melodies get stuck in my head all the time.
This is one I’ve been waiting for a while… Where Owls is so important to me, it helped define and sorta open a door to my second set of formative years (mid-20s) after some heavy shit happened to me… Anyways, I was expecting more of the same and I was surprised and even challenged a lot of the time on here. What I didn’t like was the songs that pulled from Pink Floyd’s Prog Rock. It may be heresy, but I don’t prefer Floyd’s style, they sometimes take too long to gimme the hook or for the emotional impact to sink in. I felt that with a couple of these tracks (2-3). What I did like is the songs that possessed that heft as you guys said. A nice marriage of emotion and heaviness. Those tracks sounded like sequels to songs from Where Owls. “More?” in particular sounds almost like a sequel to Death is Real. Also, fantastic point in that it’s a logical progression in their sound but that they might’ve missed a step, that’s brilliant, and I totally agree! It’s a bit of a grower, but I can say it’s a year ender, at least for me.
My copy turned up today, so I'm looking forward to getting into it. One of my fears was that they'd do Owls pt2, so I'm glad that hasn't happened. That would have been the easy route, but that album is so good that I feel it would have cheapened them.
Necrotic Nick- I totally agree there. I think this was the right direction for them to not repeat the last album but at the same time some of it was maybe pushing too hard in other directions. Still, I've been jamming this a lot and it really is very engaging and emotional listen.
Necrotic Nick- I always biff that town's name. Probably from years of buying the Reading Railroad in Monopoly and watching Reading Rainbow and assuming they were pronounced the same. lol
Very good review, I loved the last album but I'm slightly cautious on this new one as it could be too experimental, but I'll defo give it a good listen to decide whether I buy or not...Any chance of an Unto Others review? Their new album Strength has just had me bopping and headbanging round my front room lol!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I get that and honestly I was kinda there too when I hear Clean and Focus but I think it turned out to be a very solid and different album for them. I haven't checked out Unto Others but I'll look into it. There's a ton of releases coming out here in the next couple of months so it can be hard to keep up.
Necrotic Nick- There's been a lot of solid stuff this month but in terms of some really good, dark, introspective stuff this is probably my go to album for that this month. The themes of the album really connect with me which makes coming back to it even more engaging.
I've listened to it once and it's very dark, my first impression is that it's not as "fun" as the last album but I'm looking forward to see how I feel about it after a few more listens.
Necrotic Nick- I get the not as fun thing actually. It's "work" and generally work isn't fun and with the dark themes and the hard creative push on this one, I don't think fun was going to be part of it. I really dig it though.
Necrotic Nick- This is even very different than Owls to be honest but I'd still say that album is the closest to this one. I'm still jamming the hell out of it though. I'm really enjoying it so far.
Are there sax on the songs in this too? I hate sax on metal. Don't judge me! 😅 I listen to ska too 😉🤣 I have a sampler of this album that a friend hand to me earlier today. Goin to listen to it tonight or tomorrow while cleanin'. Hope it rules! I love the first two albums. Thanks for the review. 🤘
Necrotic Nick- Actually.... there's even more this time. lol. I get it though. It's not everyone's thing but it has added an interesting wrinkle to their sound.
@@thrallsofmetal yep the album is good but i still prefer the first two. I picture myself listening to it more often than the 3rd one. When the mood strikes 😉 Just finished listening the new Veilburner album and damn its brutal! Really good. And now im listening to Paleface Chapter 3 album. Great album to workout or just burn adrenaline. And that new Fit For An Autopsy single they just released, man for me it's just a Gojira ripoff meet generic deathcore. 😅 Stay Safe! 🤘
Necrotic Nick- It's definitely a shift more towards the prog side but it's heavy as hell. I don't think they're going to completely abandon the death metal side but who knows. If this takes off for them I have no idea where they'll go next.
1st off Happy Birthday to the Great and Almighty Rust in Peace one of my favorite if NOT my favorite Metal album of all time. I’ll definitely listen to this new Rivers of Nihil album but I definitely was not impressed with what I heard from the Singles so far.
Necrotic Nick- Definitely feels appropriate that I just saw Megadeth. One of my favorite thrash albums of all time. This one I think is best listened to as an entire piece. It's a real weird, dark journey of an album for the most part but really engaging.
Necrotic Nick- I love both of those as well especially Terrestria IV. That song really embodies everything they do well in one song. Not sure if this will be year end material yet. There's a lot of killer albums out there right now.
@@thrallsofmetal yeah, my favourites so far are Dead World Reclamation, Inferi, Aborted, Stortregn, Ominous Ruin and Ophidian I. -and Archspire, Obscura and First Fragment (as well as Dream Theater, in my case) is still ahead of us! The Work is ok with some grear highlights to me, but not an album I’ll go back to in its full lenght a lot - especially not compared to Owls, which actually has 5+ songs that I love.
Gotta love everything these guys do. But I must say I’ve been waiting for another “Soil & Seed” ever since the first album. To me, that’s the heaviest song they’ve ever made
Necrotic Nick- I love this one but I could have used some more songs like More? on this one. I love the push towards the progressive side but they may sacrificed too much of the death metal heft for emotional heft in some respects.
Necrotic Nick- Sometimes, but generally we sit down after jamming it and before the review and go over what it is that we think is so good. Honestly, it can be something as simple as a feeling but that can be hard to describe. Honestly, I find it harder for me describe something I love versus something that I don't like. The brain is weird that way were it clutches on to negative memories harder than positive ones though.
Necrotic Nick- I'm still at a 4 but I'm really getting more into the themes and atmosphere on this one the more I listen to it. I like the dark, brooding feel of the album.
I still don t get this album. Its all over the place but with a bad flow. Will give more listens but Idk guys. I feel like I'm always stopping for gas. It kinda blows. If their goal is to make a metal album with no riffs, its successful. 2.5 for now. Good rev as always. Btw dudes. Have you given a listen to Devoid of Thought's debut lp Outer World Graves? Cosmic dm a la Blood Incantation, each track a beast of its own. Hugs
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, the flow of the album is one of the my favorite things about the album. I like that it's a weird, winding feel it has. I would have liked some more flat out death metal moments though. It was kinda lacking there somewhat. I have that Devoid of Thought on preorder it's just taking it's own sweet time getting here unfortunately. I'll have it in a collection update when I get it though.
Necrotic Nick- I agree though I think Wait still comes to early in the album. I think that was possibly too abrupt of a shift style-wise that soon into album. It's a solid album though. I'm still jamming it a lot.
MEH - different yes, but trying to hard to be proggy for prog's sake. Lets be honest. I and none of you will probably listen to this album again. smashing pumpkins - deftones - queens of stone age - I will pass. your rating is generous
Necrotic Nick- Actually, I've been listening to this one a lot. I don't think it's better than Where the Owls Know My Name but I still really like it. It's a pretty big change for them style-wise but for the most part I really dig it.
Thralls were mystified and confused by the release the popped for 4 stars across the board. Weird. Underwhelming release. Appears everyone with advanced copies needed to clean their pants. Throwing bouquets. 3/5
Necrotic Nick- It's a very dark, twisted album but I think it's damn good. I think it may be a bit divisive with the fanbase though. I think this is what they were progressing towards but they may have pushed to far in some places.
I was a bit concerned hearing the singles, but listening to it and hearing those songs again, man, it just works, a very enjoyable album

Very emotional and dark album one of my favourites this month
4.5/5
Necrotic Nick- There's been a lot of solid stuff this month but in terms of some really good, dark, introspective stuff this is probably my go to album for that this month. The themes of the album really connect with me which makes coming back to it even more engaging.
Nice Maryland death fest hat hope to
Meet u guys there next year
Necrotic Nick- We'll be there for sure, man!
@@thrallsofmetal we have a beer I just saw your Six feet under review while I was taking a dump laughing so hard of thst review
This one was a bit of a challenge for some reason to me. Maybe I should have really kept “Owls” in constant rotation.
Necrotic Nick- This is even very different than Owls to be honest but I'd still say that album is the closest to this one. I'm still jamming the hell out of it though. I'm really enjoying it so far.
I like it better than the last and I really enjoy the last.
Necrotic Nick- As it stands I'm still a bigger fan of Where the Owls Know My Name but this is still a killer album.
@@thrallsofmetal its the style they went that i love. Where Owls Know My Name is the better album im sure.
Just sampled this new one today. Definitely more progressive, but I'm still diggin' it. As long as they don't go full prog rock like Opeth, I'm ok.
Hey Shredlord,I like your cut G
MORE? and TERRESTRIA IV: WORK were instant favourites to me!
Especially the latter will end up on my favourite 2021 songs list.. pretty damn high up!!
Why throw around all the influential band names? This record stands on its own
Gotta love everything these guys do.
Question- Have you heard albums or bands where everyone had such a bonner for yet you could not work out why it was a good album/band?
Necrotic Nick- Sometimes, but generally we sit down after jamming it and before the review and go over what it is that we think is so good. Honestly, it can be something as simple as a feeling but that can be hard to describe. Honestly, I find it harder for me describe something I love versus something that I don't like. The brain is weird that way were it clutches on to negative memories harder than positive ones though.
This would probably be amazing on shrooms...
Necrotic Nick- Possibly... it could also turn into a dark introspective trip which I'm not a huge fan of. lol
@@thrallsofmetal Hmm, good point... I guess there's always 'The Harvest Wombs' by 'Fallujah' :p
I thought the album was good. I’ll give it 3/5 stars but the rating could go up since I only listened to it once.
Necrotic Nick- I'm still at a 4 but I'm really getting more into the themes and atmosphere on this one the more I listen to it. I like the dark, brooding feel of the album.
i think you guys mean dont pull an opeth
Necrotic Nick- That one too for sure.
@@thrallsofmetal oh so cool you have Devoid of Thought under your radar, yet I'm not surprised. Gonna give The Work a "final" spin.
it works as one cohesive piece better.
Necrotic Nick- I agree though I think Wait still comes to early in the album. I think that was possibly too abrupt of a shift style-wise that soon into album. It's a solid album though. I'm still jamming it a lot.
@@thrallsofmetal it's fucking badass imo. I don't compare it to the others. Lead are amazing tho
I really dont get this band, don't hear anything special
Necrotic Nick- Different strokes for different folks I guess. Much like any band, they're not for everyone.
