When this story was being serialized as the back-up feature in Grendel Tales, I didn’t realize that it's loosely based on a nursery rhyme that goes, “Rich Man, Poor Man, Beg 'er Man (the part with the Sessions), Thief, Doctor (this part), Lawyer (the next part), Indian Chief (the last part). It’s easier to see this structure in the collected edition.

In the trade there is a little nod to this at the beginning! I had not recognized that either.
