Mixing with Mike is one of the best resources I have. I signed up for the course and one day will go through in chronological order but my learning is so haphazard and convoluted that these random TH-cam video series actually help me a little more. Can always refer back to the course for detail. We appreciate you Mike

Nearly I been working for 30 years on recording and mixing didin't had a chance to use these components my be a limited for a time i saw the urei la2 and Colins vari mu tube limiters from the radio station, now I can understand that we were far away from this tecnology and we try to do our best whit out these components.

Punch / All rounder = VCA
Hi end richness / Slam = FET
Body / low mid richness = Tube
Body / midrange detail = Optic
A very basic understanding or am I still lost😂?

Yes, im officially subscribing and adding you to one of my go-to knowledge tips. Thanks for spreading your thoughts and knowledge. Im a producer, with engineering training but havent been mixing for a while. My drums are my crucial, hard hitting, punchy with lots of layering of kicks and such. Hip Hop instrumental Drum buss and master/mix buss compression, any suggestions on tools?
Im running NI Komplete Ultimate, some Waves and Klanghelm MJUC. Im thinking maybe, Drums- DBX160(NI or waves) or Piugchild. Final mix - Maybe the SSL G Buss(NI or Waves).
The MJUC or NI Vari comp can be thrown in somewhere too

I hate to bring this up (because I love your videos), but it looks like you're adjusting the vocal LA2A when you think you're adjusting the string LA2A (around the 5min mark)? This video is almost 7yrs old, and I still find it very useful, but that stuck out...

    at 9:20 you said
"we're selecting the compression/limiting based on the sonic characteristics we're trying to enhance within the original sound"
a question i have as a novice is, how do you know what "sonic charactertic" it is that you're trying to enhance? if you gave me a vocal from 5 different singers, i feel like i would just pick a compressor at random that i feel compfortable with using. which in a way might work just fine and get acceptable results. but for someone that wants to step it up to the next level, it would be nice to learn how to listen for certain sonic characteristics that a sound needs. maybe in a future tutorial? :P

1176 in All Buttons mode. Medium Att and Fast (7) Rel. When set right it will bring the vocal right up in your face.
