    I like this video format. This serves as an introduction/table of contents and I can dive deeper with your other more detailed videos.

    Geeat vid! Ive been doing this as a hobby for 2-3 years and so many things clicked watching your vid. I still go over previous mixes I've done and wonder what was i thinking lol and compression is gor me one of those things ive had trouble getting right but i feel this vid (and all the links) are going to be such a gem for re finding my way when i overthink or go down a rabbit hole..
    Thank you!!!

      Awesome to hear that. Compression is most definitely one of the trickier aspects of mixing (even was and sometimes *still* is for me!). Probably why there's so much content and focus on it in general 🤣 I also totally go back to my old stuff and scratch my head at decisions I made (or didn't make) - but that's part of growing and getting better at this craft. Sometimes its also a "taste" thing considering how subjective music, and mixing as a whole is. We're all finding our way! Appreciate you watching and commenting!! 🙏🏼

    My personal experience Is I am bedroom artist and learn all My knowledge from yt in starting I kind of have a fear I think my vocals and things get squashed from compressing when video lecturer said having minus 5 db and even more but later on listening on artists like Kendrick Lamar I got confidence now I use and like to compress with pro MB 1176 and r vox

      Thats understandable - I definitely over-did things early on but the more you mix and the more you use compression, the better you get with it and understanding its nuances. You got this!!

    What about triggering based on frequency range? With different settings for different frequency ranges? But not from a multiband, but from a standard compressor?

    • @5piece
      @5piece  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If I wanted to compress different frequency ranges uniquely, which is what it sounds like you’re proposing, I’d use a multiband as each band can be adjusted and have its own unique setting, as I detail in that section of this video.
      Once you add the ability to compress multiple frequency ranges uniquely with a standard compressor, it becomes a multiband compressor, so the question you’re asking sort of eliminates itself.
      If I’m misunderstanding your comment and you’re asking something else, feel free to let me know

    id say have dedicated compression chain for the mains, then group all the backing vocals together

    • @5piece
      @5piece  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good idea! Basically: “compress the mains and backgrounds uniquely” type of vibe, is that correct?

    • @campar1043
      @campar1043 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ this might just be my personal taste but I feel the background vocals will interfere with the compression of the main vocals if they’re all on one compression buss and since the mains are the vocals you’re hearing throughout the song, it’s best they have an exclusive compression setup.

    • @5piece
      @5piece  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@campar1043yeah for sure, I know exactly what you mean and generally agree. Everything is situational but the reality is I do the same thing most if not all times 😅
      I feel like this is somewhat alluded to indirectly in the “ignoring the sidechain” mistake when I break down how I route mains and BGs separately BUT this could certainly get its own dedicated section/mention 🙌🏼

    • @5piece
      @5piece  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, I actually edit out a lot of breaths, pauses and other things that happen between points to reduce the overall video length and deliver as much value as possible.
      I also have a dedicated breathwork practice outside of making videos - so rest assured, oxygen is flowing my friend 😁

      My personal experience with DistroKid since 2017 has been very positive. I’ve used their services regularly for distribution and features like Instant Share without any issues. Payouts have always been timely, and on the rare occasions I’ve needed support, it's been reliable. Many artists I work with also use DistroKid without problems. Considering they serve over 2 million artists, it’s understandable that experiences may differ, but this has been my perspective - and the reason I accepted their sponsorship in the first place. I don't promote products or services I don't believe in or use (you should see how many sponsorship inquiries I reject 🤣).
      In case you're writing this comment after watching some popular videos disparaging DistroKid, I’ve found there are two main complaints: money being withheld and songs/accounts being taken down.
      Regarding money being withheld, many of these complaints stem from a misunderstanding of taxation. I'm not an accountant or tax expert, but my understanding is that depending on where you're based, you may experience double taxation (paying tax in the US, and your home country). DistroKid and other companies have implemented an automatic tax-withholding system to ensure that US taxes are paid, as required by the law, even if you're not based in the US. This is a brief explanation, but essentially, if you earn money in the US, unless your country has a tax treaty, you will be subject to US tax of which up to 30% of your earnings is automatically withheld. This isn't DistroKid "stealing" it - they're withholding it to pay uncle Sam on your behalf. I'm Canadian, so I don't have this problem since we have a 0% tax treaty with the US - but not every country (and resident) is as lucky. However, if you don't properly take care of the proper paperwork on their platform, even with a treaty, you will experience this withholding tax so its more of a reminder to be on top of stuff to ensure you are getting 100% of your money without anything being withheld.
      As for music being taken down, that situation is often due to policy violations - whether it's using AI-generated music, botting streams, or uploading stolen music as one's own. It's pretty much what you'd expect, but often people in these situations may not take responsibility and instead play the victim. Personally, I’ve never seen reputable artists making these types of complaints; they tend to come from less established voices on platforms like Reddit that clearly violated one of the policies - but maybe I'm wrong.
      For me, DistroKid has been a reliable partner as both a musician and content creator, and their sponsorship helps support this channel and make content like this possible.

    good vid....but your so good u say and ur using a cheap m audio keyboard ? and 2 mins before you got into the vid

    • @5piece
      @5piece  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That keyboard was my first audio gear purchase ever, and has served me well for over a decade now. It works just fine to this day, and reminds me of my start.
      It goes without saying, but the gear being used doesn’t dictate the result, the person using it does. As they say “it’s the ear, not the gear.”
      Some producers like Benny Blanco have made hits on shitty Casio keyboards - do you question how “good” they are because of how old/cheap their tools are?The reality is, it doesn’t matter at all.
      I’ve also provided chapter markers on the video from the moment it went live for those who don’t have enough attention span to watch it start to finish fully. You’re more than welcome to use them and jump around as you see fit if you didn’t want to watch the content leading into the mistakes 😉
