Oh, not just psych hospitals. Locked wards for people with dementia and Alzheimer's, too. I was in one for about 2 years (brain damage), and I - a) had 6 iPads stolen from me by staff members because I was using them to record patients attacking each other, b) got attacked by 2 or 3 other patients with dementia (including getting strangled with my own necklace, having my hair ripped out of my head, getting stabbed in the neck with a pencil, and having a cup of water thrown at me), c) didn't get to shower for almost 2 years (I literally had to get a special medicated shampoo from my hairdresser afterwards), and d) wasn't getting any medication for my medical condition (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis). I ended up having to pull the fire alarm to escape.
I literally was laying in a bed for so long that I lost the ability to walk. (Seriously, I was using a walker at one point). I was about 28 at time; I shouldn't have had to use a walking aid.

Psychiatric drugs have ruined my life. I was a functional individual and was very good at my craft. Two weeks into abilify prescribed for anxiety and stress (which I objected to but ended up giving up authority), severe akathisia kicked in. The prescribed solution? A higher dose of abilify, 15mg. I ended up quitting cold turkey. I still have some akathisia to this day, a year later, and my mind has been completely obliterated. I guess no more computer science for me and goodbye to my phd.

Hi Augustin, You are touching on an important issue. Any medication is a double edged sword, i.e. it can have helpful and harmful effects. Which effects a medication will have in a given patient at a given time can be impossible to forsee. A patient of mine recently started taking Abilify, and his life has been transformed in a very positive way.
Tai Chi, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, and dietary changes potentially could help in a situation such as yours. Peter Goertz

Psychiatrists give out meds to non acute patients in Florida especially elderly and children just to make them easy to manage and compliant. You are more responsible than most. We really do have a problem with diagnostic inflation and no doctors give informed consent regarding sexual dysfunction too.

Im not a psychiatrist but I decided to call it “the point of diminishing help” which is borrowed from a business phrase called “ the point of diminishing returns” because there is an easy to anticipate point at which medication begins to do more harm than good. This is a good time to anticipate and Dr Peter Breggin says a plan to titrate onto meds should be accompanied by a plan to go off of meds . It should be time limited at the outset. And psychotheraputic help should never be venting in a room with a paid sounding board. Psychotherapy should incorporate context. Family and friends and small community such as church or a twelve step group or a bible group or a group therapy or a support group. Some sort of mileiu or social context should be brought into with participants in the process in my opinion. Dialogic practice is ideal but it cant be done in a medical setting. Its done in homes and nothing is spoken about the patient outside his or her presence. Self determination is an important aspect of the recovery model. When psychiatry classifies people in categories it forgets that some categories of distress are incompatible and therefore should not be called each others’ peers”

Seeing an acutely agitated patient in an ER situation and you've heavily sedated them with antipsychotics, who's following up with them and taking them off the drugs you put them on?

@@goertzpsychiatry9340 Right. That's what I'm saying, the norm is they get put on meds in the ER for a crisis and often end up thinking they need to remain on those meds. Dr's thinking they need to remain on those meds. The cycle of a lifetime of polydrugging has begun. Where in reality many patients don't need to remain polydrugged or drugged at all. Remarkably many psychiatrists think this is a way of life for most patients, that they "need" medications. When in fact many would do better without.

I have not successfully treated a schizophrenic patient without medication. However it is conceivable, that a schizophrenic patient could do reasonably well without medication, if there is adequate social and emotional support, possibly including psychotherapy, good housing, good nutrition and support of physical health.

TH-cam automatically categorizes comments based on the date that they were left and how many likes they received; so individual channel owners have nothing to do with that.
So a comment that was left 2 months ago that got 10,000 likes would rank higher than a comment that got left 5 years ago that only has 100 likes.

I wish I could be prescribed benzodiazepines as an as needed medication. It's really the only thing that works when I'm having a bad anxiety attack. Unfortunately my meds doctor is scared to prescribe them to me because I am a recovering addict. I've been clean 23 yrs but, my anxiety has gotten worse in the past year. I'm on seroquel, clonidine and lamictal but, it doesn't really help the bad anxiety attacks I get some times. I feel like I could handle it as an as needed and not take them all the time but, I understand her concern.
