I learned my lesson about the handlebars the hard way. I have a 20 year old Briggs mower that I absolutely love. It's not even self propelled, but it is still my primary mower, even though I have several that are newer and self propelled. I moved last year and I lowered the handlebars to fit it in the truck. I forgot about it and brought it out a couple of months later and tried to use it. It chewed the handlebars up. I haven't even checked the crank yet. I hope it isn't bent since it is a family heirloom. I have to find a parts mower somewhere, but I haven't had any luck yet.
I just came up on a similar find. A coworker of my brother gave me a Craftsman self propelled. He said it belonged to his grandmother and that it was brand new. He said that she overfilled it with oil. That was true, but I knew immediately by looking at it that it wasn't a new mower. The build date on the engine is 04/08. That being said, it hasn't been used more than once or twice. The paint on the underside of the deck is perfect. There is no rust at all. She bought this mower 16 years ago, overfilled it and parked it, then never did anything with it. I got it running perfect but I broke the tab on the carburetor that the choke arm screws into, so I am going to have to put a carb on it. It is in pristine condition now that it is cleaned up.
Nice work Tom, got'er going. 👍🤣
You know what my favorite part was.... haha
I'm a Briggs guy. You can't beat them. I had this old Troy Bilt tiller with a Briggs engine that I was selling. When the buyer told me he was on the way, I went out to start it and of course, the carb decided to act up. I took the carb off, cleaned it, and reinstalled it in 14 minutes. I had it running by the time he got there. On the other hand, I have an old Snapper mower with a GCV160 that has a fuel system issue that i have been dealing for two years and still haven't figured out. I'll take Briggs any day.
love my briggs!
Good video Tom. I'm pretty sure that when the machines are sold new, they don't have any oil in them, save for what be left from a test run when made. They should come with a little pouch of oil. Got a 2023 Murray now with a knock and hardly used. I'm betting the original owner did not put oil in it when using out of the box!!
👍👍👍
I also acquired an 18 year old generator last year that was still in the box, and had never had oil or gas in it. I got it running without issue, but the recoil was so brittle that it disintegrated after a couple of pulls, and I haven't been able to find one for it yet. I can't understand why someone would buy an expensive item like that and never use it. I wish I had that kind of money.
Happy Thanksgiving Tom
thanks hank!
I bought a AWD Toro few years back. The plate came out of the throttle shaft ran wide open till it blew the rod. Wouldn't you think the operator would think somthing was wrong with it running wide open?
Happy Thanksgiving Tom, you got a little rusty on carburetor cleanings I see. 😂😂😂
I didn't think it was an '09 when you said that at first. I don't think they started with the plastic carbs until around 2012 or so. The oldest one I have right now with a plastic carb is a 2013.
Would a drop or two of dry gas help get the water out of the system?
no it'd attract more, carn cleaner is better cause it evaporates quickly
Don’t puke Tom!!!!
I was about to say that push mower looks a bit too modern for something being made back in 2009. QR codes for smartphones didn't really start taking off until the 2010s lol
LoL, forget about the year Mark, the main thing is a carb was cleaned and no small mowers were harmed in the process. 🤣👍
@@Big_Johns but but, that carb wasn't as dirty lol
@@MarkMeadows90 LoL.... true but a carb clean is a carb clean no matter the level of nastification. 🤣
It’s frustrating but kinda funny when it’s just one thing after another after another with no rhyme or reason to it. Every once in a while I’ll get a mower like that, just needs a simple easy 15 minute repair but everything goes completely sideways and it takes up all Saturday afternoon. Dang mower’s cursed!
i'm just glad i have the luxury to take allll dayyyy if i need to, haha i wont get beat!
Won’t get beat - NEVER!!
Maybe it was sitting outside for a while.
@@tonym6920 it was in one of those hot metal sheds
I hope you have a nice Thanksgiving, Tom. That mower looks like it came from that 1963 movie, 'The Day of the Triffids' with the vines attacking it. I have seen the British black & white version.
When I worked on my neighbor's mower, I never realized how easy that big plastic carb drain plug came out. I remember thinking that I hope this thing stays in there, due to the few threads on it. I think I did that draining before noticing the air filter clogged with oil and grass.
