  • Over the last few weeks we have been building a new garden in the backyard, starting with kitchen gardens and herbs, and now, finally, recreating our Grocery Row Gardening system on a larger scale!
Join us as we plant a garden and have some fall fun. And bury a sacrifice. Here's how to plant a grocery row garden, piece by piece. (Including some impromptu plumbing).

Grocery Row Gardening is a permaculture gardening method developed by David The Good. It is an agroforestry garden on a backyard scale, creating a food forest under control by putting it into rows. It uses elements from Stefan Sobkowiak's Permaculture Orchard, Andrew Millison's edible hedges, Geoff Lawton's food forest systems, Ernst Goetsch's Syntropic Agriculture, Ann Ralph's Grow a Little Fruit Tree and lots of my own innovation, creating a food garden that overflows with life. I consider it my backyard emergency food supply, as well as a place of joy and beauty.

The shed and the oak tree....those had an epic battle😬

I don't know much about the frost line in Alabama....I think is where you said you're at, but if there's any risk of freezing, that tap is going to bust and become a nightmare to deal with in wintertime. I used to install hydrants and install wells and the plumbing for them. Hydrants are built so that the excess water left inside bleeds back down through a weeping valve below the frost line into some gravel. If freezing water is a risk there, this tap you installed should only be used as a temporary solution.

After your video a few weeks back I contacted that company to see if I could get a deal on one of their 17" broad forks. They talked me down to the "peoples" 12" cause I'm 5' tall, 115 lbs and 65 yrs old. I bought it but my inner ego still thinks I could have done the 17". Anyway, thanks for highlighting it...it's great!

Thank you for these videos, I've been thinking and reading and sketching plans. I started out looking at Food Forest style, and then Permaculture design. Got overwhelmed and just decided 'ya know what, I'm just gonna plant fruit trees (pruned and/espaliered to stay within reach and not shade things too much) and perennials of things we actually eat and plant my veggies in between. Had no idea this was a thing. I've been growing in containers for 3 years but tried a few dug out beds topped w/ compost and mulch this spring and am hooked on gardening in the ground again.

I like your idea of leaving the cherry tree in your row. I'm considering doing the same with a volunteer mulberry (thank you, Mr Bird). But, first I want your opinion. Is a mulberry suitable for topping at about six feet tall? It's about four feet from our garage and about ten feet from the house, so if it can't be kept small it will have to go. Thanks very much. ~ Lisa
P.S. Your water pipe find was quite serendipitous, almost as if God were blessing your garden. Forgive me for waxing poetic, but that was the thought that entered my mind when you showed it.
P.S.S. I'm very excited for you and your family as you develop your new homestead. Sorry about the goat. Perhaps you could add a verse to that song of yours. You know, the one about burying your rabbit beneath a cherry tree. Just a thought.

Mulberry is one that will seek out any pipes with water and the roots can destroy plumbing so be aware of where you let them live. Mr. Rotor Rooter will be a visitor if you put em or let them grow in the wrong place.. don’t ask me how I know..🙄

MAKE SURE YOU PLANT THE LOQUAT TREE BEFORE IT DIES! My dad has loquats here in South Texas, & he gets a ton of them in the spring & they’re delicious! You don’t even have to do much for them - they grow well in warm weather climates. I usually go over to his house between late March & early April, and I’m usually able to gather huge buckets full of the fruit. I pull the peeling off and eat them fresh (spitting out the seeds, but I also make tons of loquat jelly, which is delicious on biscuits, muffins, as a filling between layers of cake, etc.. The only year that they didn’t produce fruit, was after the big Texas freeze, but I hope they’ll produce fruit again in 2023.

    • @thehillsidegardener3961
      @thehillsidegardener3961 ปีที่แล้ว

In your experience, can loquats survive a freeze? Sounds like they can, but might not produce that year because the blossom gets hosed? Which is pretty much the same as plums, cherries etc. Or is it that even a cold winter will prevent fruiting next year? Also, do you know if multiple trees are needed for pollination? I have one I planted from a seed someone gave me, thinking to plant it out, but we can get very cold winters, plus I might need to get another one if I want fruit.

Ok I bought the GRG book (mainly out of support) but even though size doesn't really matter all that much I'm still thinking i quite simply don't have enough space to add trees, that makes me sad. We already have a preexisting OLD mulberry tree that provides a lot of berries and also a lot of afternoon shade 😢. We own a quater of a block in a small town and our neighbors own the other 3/4 and sadly their yard has a ton of trees that shade our backyard and as fall rolls around my garden area sees less and less sun, so much so that I have very little hope for my fall plantings. Despite all this being said i am using all space I can (we tried to expand my growing area this year but ran into extremely old cement that has broken into gravel property line to property line) to grow in I've put in grapes, blackberry, blueberry, strawberriy, raspberry, asparagus and standard annuals, can I still consider it a GRG without the use of trees? Or would it be like a Dollar General Row Garden? 🤣. It's it possible to grow dwarf trees in big pots? 🤷‍♀️ I LOVE the GRG book it's packed full of great info (as well as the other two I have) and it motivates me to continue saving those pennies to one day turn them into a few acres. I'm also excited to see this new Good setup flurish 👍 (sorry that was extremely long winded)

You got some slunky assed chops, man. Love your videos, and music. Do you hand play the drums on a midi controller, and do bass, lead guit, as well? My guess is that you do.

The soil looks 1000% better than the last garden! I can relate to clearing the area before plumbing as the air tends to get blue when using pvc..
Question for you.. would this principle of grocery row garden work on a approx 30 degree slope as long as the beds can be formed and kept in place? Also, if a swale before a 4’ wide level bed on the up slope side would work well to keep erosion to a minimum and also serve as a H2O catchment bank of sorts. Slope is west to east, east facing, gets sun most of the day, planning beds to run north south across the slope. I have 16 fruit trees - bare root and in pots, 6 raspberry starts and comfrey root to start with and as I find other shrubs will add them. Plan to keep fruit trees small, no taller than 6’ to make pruning and eventual harvesting easier and ladder free.
Working on digging out wild invasive Himalayan blackberries and scotch broom before I run the tractor and rototiller over it so fragments of blackberry roots don’t spread everywhere and make more.

My brother, I don't have a farm or land or anything yet yet being the key word so I don't really pay too close attention to your videos but I really appreciate you giving your book away for free I still have it downloaded and I will use it one day. I'm here to comment on your beard, you look absolutely phenomenal you remind me of someone, oh it's me you remind me of me! Can't trust men that don't have beards like us, lesbians.

Could you show us a soil profile ? A close up of a hole, maybe 3 or 4 feet deep ?
And put a soil sample on a sheet of paper printed with a standard color chart to document humus storage ?
I sound like i’m asking a lot maybe. But it’s just ideas of content and documenting your garden.

I am going to test the soil soon. Digging a pit for a soil profile is a good idea.
