A similar problem trolled me for months! Then my lights stopped working.. My problem was the push nuts on the end of the brake linkage. They were worn and not holding tension, allowing for the slightest wiggle. The wiggle was enough for the lights not to activate. New push nuts helped me. The brake linkage is that skinny metal bar with all the right angles. Glad you figured your problem out!
