      I watched Bruce from the time he first came to Britain, to join Coopers, under Jack Brabham in 1959. In 1960, Bruce became the youngest ever driver to win a GP when he won in the US, and, in 1961, the Argentina GP.

    The bond between Bruce and his cars and Chevrolet thunder forged a spirit of racing prowess and passion that Mclaren UK has built F1 and GT legends upon. On top of that, Mclaren Performance Technologies has been decisive in the concept and creation of some of the finest race and production engines ever. I didn't see an M20. I did bodywork on one in 1988 or 89 and hoped to see if the changes I made were still evident. At that time the owner was trying to get the car back to original from changes made by whoever bought and raced the car after McLaren left CanAm.
    The M20 was the last CanAm McLaren.
    Watching the car on the track by itself from turn 11 at Sears Point you could feel the vibration of the engine in your rib cage even when it was over the hill and you couldn't see it. Utterly awesome.

    There was a McLaren Festival in New Zealand in 2010 at the opening of Hampton Downs Circuit and at Pukekohe Circuit the week later. 107 teams came from around the world to celebrate Bruce's life and the teams achievements. The 320 competing cars were housed in a giant marquee, as the pits hadn't been completed at that stage. It was a very exciting weekend, with huge crowds attending. Since then there has been a Festival at Hampton Downs for Chris Amon, Denny Hulme and Howden Ganley, as well as McLaren, all Kiwi F1 drivers. The 6 day Festival format was discontinued in 2016 with the change of ownership of the circuit.

    I saw Denny & Bruce every Feb during the Tasman Series. Living close to the track we went to unofficial practise . Got to see & listen to these guys . I do remember Denny he was quite a storyteller if not surrounded by people. Ted Mayer whose brother Tim was killed at Longford in Tasmania was helping Bruce run his team at that time . These cars as one of the US magazines said at the time were “ normal cars built abnormally well”. I think from watching an interview with Denny that the team really put their major efforts into these cars for 1 major reason money & because to a lesser extent they loved driving them.But they were unbeatable until the Porsche 917 came along.Very few teams had achieved that in motor racing at that time.

    An aspect that's remarkable for the era of motorsports was that while Bruce McLaren was developing and racing his dominant Group 7 Can-Am cars back then, at the same time he also had the time and resources to develop and race competitive Formula 1 racers, too.
    Can anyone imagine a Formula 1 team nowadays venturing into sports car racing in the same race season; with having the dominance that McLaren had in the Can-Am sports car series?

      @RobertKarlBerta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Big block Ford and Chevys....some with aluminum blocks... based on 427ci roughly. Although Porsche had their own engine and there were some others like the ALFA T33s brought over from Europe. I was there for these races at Laguna Seca starting in 1968. Live in SF and this was the highlight of the year for me each year. The inventiveness of these guys was amazing. Saw some pretty interesting cars...some not as successful but. I was there when Jim Hall ran his Chapparal "vacuum cleaner" car that would have won except a cheap bearing went uut out the last lap. That car was outlawed the next season as it was so much faster than anything else of the day It used a second motor to power a big fan to such the car to the ground. It also used an automatic transmission instead of a manual. Also saw one car that was 4 wheel drive with 4 showmobile engines in it. Another had a blown drag boat engine complete with zoomy boat headers. The first AVS Shadow that experimented with tiny wheels to gain an aerodynamic advantage. That failed in many ways but they came back with a competitive car and won in future years.
      I got to meet several of these drivers. McLaren, Hall, Revson, Hulme, etc. I later raced in SCCA with an ALFA GTV B Sedan....lots of memories of those Can Am races and sad that they finally ended....but you can still see them at Vintage Race Car events.

    Ford Guys talk BS about the "Loosely FORD" Ford Gt40 and these CHEVY powered cars would Blow them off the road. Same with the CHEETAH's and the Weak Shelby Cobras.

      Porsche won 100 times more races than ford.
      Chevy won alot more races with cars built by the factory.

      Not wanting to argue, But cobras were made by ACE in England and Carroll built Gt40s. Aren't McLaren cars from New Zealand ?

      They may have used the Hilborn inlet manifolds but the injectors and fuel pumps were timed units, not the alcohol style that ruled dirt speedway.

      This was nothing. Some run even two cars, modified, recent model Shadows against 60's cars. Defeats the heritage and appreciation.

    2:18 - This guy and his "marginal brakes" and "no aerodynamics" irks me. If it had no aerodynamics, it would have never gone that fast and it would have lifted off the ground and flown. Those vented front fenders and the spoiler across the rear aren't for looks. What he means is they didn't have ground effects, maybe.

      I think he meant in comparison to cars like Chaparral with vacuum effects and high wings connected direct to axles. Obviously it's not a yellow school bus. Some also had side wings in addition to a low skirt, the 917 short tail was even fairly evolved.
