Two buffed perks that allow the potentially potent combo of a very consistent and easy 0.8s optimal TTK with solid range, tons of flinch - especially with high-cal, and a kill-to-heal for a solid chunk of health that can help your nearby teammates occasionally too.
Darkest before is my 2nd most all time used primary weapon, and all those kills are on a roll I grinded like crazy for 2.5 years ago. When I saw it was coming back I was so hyped because while my old roll could still hang, it had definitely been power crept in the perk department a bit. Seeing that first column makes me so sad. I have the Arc Darkest Before with corkscrew, ricochet, tunnel vision Eli cap, handling masterwork. it allows me to shoot 5 star restaurants at enemies on a kill-while also having around 83 stability on void.
I've been having fun with Oversoul Edict as sort of a longer-range SMG with something more rangey in the top slot - but you need a melee build for the shotty pushers.
i didn't know that rapid fires were so terrible right now, i just got this gun with ele cap and headseeker and thought i hit the jackpot. mag barrel and mw were great too. i've been loving it and have probably near 100 kills on it already, but i admit that it is tougher to top frag with it in a lobby of 2.0+ crucible sweats using igneous adept. i've been using it with cryosthesia to chain kills with behemoth titan diamond lance and i'm loving it. behemoth titan is the most underrated current pvp subclass by a landslide and i highly recommended anyone looking into it - hard to use but it has many cool functions if one wishes to master it. thank you for talking about this awesome pulse TV!
Excellent review, and moreover analysis of the new sandbox and where this beloved archetype sits. I agree that there are some challenges to consider with using these pulses, particularly when it comes to engagement spacing. What I will say though, is that I was fortunate enough to pick up a E.Cap+Kill Clip roll with Smallbore+RR and Range MW. This gets you 56 range and 65 stability at base (85 stability?! on Void), and something rather magical, on Stasis, gets you 99 recoil direction with Counterbalance mod, plus the pseudo Moving Target benefit. All while maintaining excellent stability, over 34 meters of range, and the lethality of Kill Clip. THEN there's the awesome origin trait, which is just elevating everything a little further. It's magical. I get that the sandbox makes you work for it, but holy crap does this thing sing when you want it to. My only wishlist alternative would be to have an option of Smallbore OR Arrowhead for more flexibility, but as-is it's instantly one of my favorites. It has nowhere to go but up... right?
Heal Clip+Kill Clip is amazing, especially with ember of benevolence and the radiant dodge. The true strength of the weapon depends on the strength of the build that complements it. Horror’s least might be better for other subclasses, but on solar hunter this exceeds the strength of Horror’s Least and others.

darkest before is my favorite weapon in the game- so i feel qualified to speak on it as an expert. darkest before is a stat monster among rapid fire frames, so the way to run it is to double down on that with elemental capacitor. it's also the only RF pulse to get elemental capacitor in a different column than accuracy perks (both versions). my number one want for the new perk pool was eCap + headseeker, and the new one gave us exactly that, and even better, since eCap was moved to the third column- as its generally a 4th column perk. there are some other good things to take away also- the best way to run new darkest before is objectively eCap + headseeker. (my preference on the OG was always arc for the handling- this may change) there is an argument to run eCap + kill clip for kill chaining (with the element change, you could maybe run solar subclass for better chaining + subclass synergy, and then handling mods) ecap + surplus is also neat- with this roll, because of how many stats you're getting, the goal here is to max out range with full bore, ricochet, range mw. i don't recommend solar subclass here. the last one that's worth pointing out is heal clip + kill clip, as a fun roll. i still feel the top 2 are better.
Elemental Capacitor and Headseeker is so nice. Got that yesterday and in one play session I got 111 kills with the gun. I don't even like rapid fires and it felt great to me
I farmed (an embarrassing 490something times) to get the old Darkest Before with Chambered + Ricochet and Surplus + Elemental Capacitor. Also has a range masterwork. It’s an absolute unit on void and arc - I don’t care what roll of what adept you compare it to. I’d put that roll in any 3s or 6s lobby where I’m not fighting *the best of the best* and do well. I don’t even run a stat mod on it btw - I either run backup mag or sweaty confetti. lol That said, the new roll with heal clip + kill clip is going to slay in 6s better (will likely replace my surplus + rampage roll). Paired with the Precious Scars helmet and solar you’re just chunking health return. Pair it with One Eye and void titan and you can gain a massive amount of health on winning a duel. Pump stability as high as you can get it with Arrowhead to control recoil direction.

Why not use Head seeker and get the buff from the perk proc? Watching your shots you appear to be getting most of your crits on the second burst anyway?

personally i really get down with Old Sterling, I think it's a solid auto rifle. It's not S-tier or meta breaking, but it's far from being a detriment to your arsenal. I can't stand Perpetualis myself.
Two things: 1) Rapid Fire frames are bad at your level of play, but hold up great where folks aren't hitting all of their shots. The range and extra bits of damage help quite a bit, and frankly most high-level players don't like it when bullet-hose weapons are meta anyway. Plenty of weapons excel only in certain skill bands and I don't see that as a huge problem. 2) Attrition Orbs absolutely slaps in PvE, and can work in PvP under specific setups. With the kickstart mods getting nerfed to now need armor charge to work, an easy way to guarantee having those charges when you need them is to have extra orbs. Plus with the leg mods that grant healing/regen/energy on orb pickup, the extra orbs are quite nice.

Edit: also, I’m REALLY good in PvP with 540s and understand that they’re difficult skilled weapons in this meta.
I want to avoid grinding the prophecy dungeon because EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS REFRESH is a complete insult to me as a lover of 600rpm auto rifles, my favorite archetype, especially timed with the health change which reverts the bodyshot damage buff they literally just got recently. Replace the solid 600rpm auto with a goated 600rpm smg and keep the 540 pulse while giving them way better perk pools and a great origin perk that the auto will never have. Thanks bungie. Oh, and i almost forgot: they ALSO added a goated 450 auto! But god this pulse is tempting me. 540s are my favorite pulse archetype and this thing is solid, and my old 5/5 godroll is still one of my favorites with surplus/rampage. Like, Headseeker / heal clip is REALLY tempting to me. edit: Like, im thinking ideal scenario smallbore / high cal / heal clip / headseeker / range MW might go hard. That way you're getting solid range and passing the 34m mark, inflicting crazy flinch, still getting some stability, headseeker is just cracked, and then heal clip lets you heal a solid chunk before the next duel allowing you to more safely recover from the last or chain into the next.
They removed the most unique perk this thing had, which was slideshot, and idk why!? I honestly think it would have been a monster of a pulse if they kept it. This is why I get anxious every time bungie reprises weapons because they said long ago they wouldn't remove perks that made the weapon unique
Darkest before is my favorite gun, most kills I have on one weapon, got 8 kills in one round of trials with it, and it’s great. But the old darkest was better imo
Heal clip is insane on this thing. Makes chaining super easy. I got appended mag on mine and with backup mag I have a 48 mag so it is just unrelenting fury

I kept 2 older rolls on this gun. They're still arc, I got the newer version and it's decent. But I think my arc versions are better!!
Did this man just ignore the fact it rolls with headseeker
Oversoul edict is the best, but no kill clip
Headseeker 540’s are great they 7 crit 2 body always, I think it’s worth it if you get an absolute god roll
Damn wish surplus was in the first column
Performance is one thing.
But, that gun is so CLEAN.
As a Rapid Fire Pulse lover, this hurts to hear
They removed the most unique perk this thing had, which was slideshot, and idk why!? I honestly think it would have been a monster of a pulse if they kept it. This is why I get anxious every time bungie reprises weapons because they said long ago they wouldn't remove perks that made the weapon unique
I still have mine with slideshot and rampage haha. It still procs easily in 6s.
I got one with Kill clip heal clip.
All i can say is man still fav rappid pulse.
Are you going to start doing apex coverage? It's in such a good spot right now! Came back since I quit destiny and it's so refreshing
Although I dont prefer them much in PvE, I could see this being decent in PvE where people enjoy Pulses.
I love surplus because you have to be smart using your abilities in pvp
Can’t agree more. It’s a decent PVE pulse if nothing else. Very odd time to play since folks really just hold hands in spawn lately 😂
Not giving darkest before rapid hit and keep away was a huge L it does not have a single useful perk in the 3rd column for pvp
Thanks, but I'll stick with my Oversoul 😊
TV!!!!
Ohai
Darkest before is my favorite gun, most kills I have on one weapon, got 8 kills in one round of trials with it, and it’s great. But the old darkest was better imo
I cant speak to all but my Piece of Mind has been wrecking people just fine in this meta, just need to know how to engage people.
Rapid Fires have almost always sucked to be honest. Up against heavy pulses or long ranged weapons, you lose every time basically.
140s have this problem and even worse
Man I can't Solo that dungeon to save my life..
I swear i was subbed before today
Sad they took slideshot from it 😭
Good luck with the will thing. LOL
Let’s see what we got here
Thank you for keeping scrubs away from this weapon.
I will stick with my Arc versions regardless.
Messenger destroys 540's in duel's IMO
Piece of mind is still the best 540
Headseeker>Kill Clip
Heal clip is insane on this thing. Makes chaining super easy. I got appended mag on mine and with backup mag I have a 48 mag so it is just unrelenting fury
