That axe is definitely a Hoss 👍👍. I split with a Tazie but would interested in trying that certain YT'er's designed splitter but will have to wait until he jumps in bed with a mass production tool company that will make one that the common folk can afford. 😉😉
Hello i just subscribed. Did you do video on what killed the 440? Looked for video of air leak test and could not find it. You rebuilt and ran but we didnt see pressure vac results. Thanks . Will watch more now that i am subscribed.
Thanks so much for the subscription! I didn't in the end.. it was for a friend who needed it back in a hurry and knew the risks of it blowing up again. I've not heard anything.. so I'm tending to think it was worn or had a mechanical problem that led it to fail.
impressive. Curious if you internd to maintain the mirror finish on the edge (and if so how?) or let the Patina develop? I made the mistake of using my new tuathai for spliting in lockdown and left the head covered in stain. A few forums suggested Autosol which didn't remove. I don't think I have the tools to restore a mirror finish and 240 grit sander head leaves scratch marks. Rookie error I guess?
Yes I will maintain it with regular cleaning and hand polishing. When I reprofile an axe I tend to polish the part I've sanded, my process for that is 120grit belt sander to reprofile, then 240 by hand, then 800 by DA sander, then polish with a mop and jewellers rouge on a drill. So even if this gets bad I know I can bring it back. Maybe I'll do a video on it? I've got a tuatahi china that is corroded..
Very good - a video on that would be great . I went mad with sanders on my first few vintage axes before I learned about patina and its relevance. However for a new shiny axe I’d like to keep it that way. BTW as lovely as the Tuathai is it didn’t perform well splitting big beech ( at least in my hands). Obviously meant for chopping rather than splitting! Fancied some of that timbersports action some day !
