33 Lego Wheels/Tracks on Wood (worst to best)

  • 33 Lego wheels, tires or tracks tested on a wooded board to find the best traction. Presented in order from worst to best. Enjoy!
    Test method:
    adjust the slope angle until the driving car doesn't slide down or climb up but stays in place
    measure the angle of inclination
    calculate the coefficient of friction = tan(angle)
    Potential sources of error:
    traction varies along the wooden board (maybe +/- 1 degree of error in spots)
    wheel rotation speed varies (faster rotation adds maybe even 2 degrees to the result with some tires, tried to minimize it by using L-motor with large tires)
    vibration (happened noticeable only with 15038c03, those errors were omitted)
    weight varies (shouldn't matter in theory)
    uneven weight distribution on the 4 wheels
    angle measurement inaccuracies
    == the results are not very accurate, but I'm confident they are roughly correct
    All wheels were wiped clean before testing.
    The material of the wood board is pine, untreated

    0:36 Imagine being a massive caterpillar track capable of moving on any rough terrain, only to get beat by a wheel so small, it makes the car look like it came out of a 98 year old Alabamian that had a family tree more circular that the wheels itself.

      to be fair, tracks arent meant for smooth surfaces.

    • @joeyy2207
      @joeyy2207 3 ปีที่แล้ว +106

      Tracks are as much about spreading the weight across a greater area than pure traction on a flat surface. (They also have an advantage in not needing pneumatic pressure, so can drive over things that would puncture and deflate a normal tire. this does not matter as much in the Lego world.)

    • @DrRedstone172
      @DrRedstone172 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      ever heard of pressure per square inch? thats whats happening here, the smaller the wheel the smaller the area of contact for roughly the same weight, so there is an increase of pressure on those 4 points of contact improving grip/friction
      that is also why those small plastic wheels at 0:10 are the best ones on the plastic group

    • @andrehashimoto8056
      @andrehashimoto8056 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@DrRedstone172
      for solid, smooth terrain, small wheels with decent weight being supported make for a better source of friction
      for solid, but somewhat rought terrain (such as Roads and non smooth concrete surfaces), a medium diameter wheel or large and wide wheel make better sources
      for rough terrain, with variable softness, catterpillars work best

    Wow, thank you very much! This is really useful!
    I'm surprised tracks perform that poorly - I guess they really are more of a solution to vehicles being heavy and needing to distribute their weight across more axles, or something?
    It's heartening to see that traction has been getting better over the years.

    • @VekhGaming
      @VekhGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tracks are mostly intended for soft terrain.
      Especially these rigid tracks offer next to no grip on hard surfaces since there is very little surface area actually in contact with the ground.
      Its why the rubber grousers on the tracks improved the grip so much, might look like a smaller contact patch, but all of that contact-patch is actually gripping the ground, rather than only part of the track surface gripping.

    Bro, you are amazing! I love your videos, not only for your use of legos and mind blowing creations but just how you can make a technical study over the performance of lego mechanisms super interesting. I have never seen you use terrible music or have annoying long rambling explanations or weird paid promotions in your videos at all. You are just straight to the point on experimenting keeping a very professional manner and focus on your topic. I love this channel and all your videos are truly phenomenal. I look forward to the future of this channel whatever formula you have for making these videos do not change it. Also I do appreciate your small implements of humor in the videos especially when u made the wheels at the end fly up into the sky on the board. I just can’t enough of your content please keep it up.

    does weight play a role too?
    edit
    and does the diameter of the wheel affects its torque?

    • @ryanobrady569
      @ryanobrady569 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes diameter effects torque since torque is related to force by F = T / (r x sin(a)) where r is the radius of the wheel or length of the lever, F is the force applied and a is the angle between the force and the lever. If we draw a line from the axel to the ground through the wheel we can see the force is applied at 90 degrees to the lever arm and sin(90) is 1 so we're left with F = T/r. This means increasing the wheel radius for the same torque will reduce the force that the wheel applies to the wood.

    Plastic on wood: Doesn't raise up, just a little bit only, weak traction.
    Rubber on wood: Does do raise up nicely, big wheels are better, and also the last one (rubber on wood) is also the wheel to improve tire grip.

    As an Engineer, I have to point out something about the Coefficient of Friction number, it’s only valid for the lego wheel being tested and the piece of wood. The coefficient of friction changes between different surfaces. Imagine how this experiment might be different if there was ice or sandpaper on the ramp
