    My favorite way to write mothers is to make them strong, eager to protect her family, and nurturing. Mothers, if she or her family is threatened, can be very scary when angry or protective.

    I don’t think that moons mom is bad at all. She had a egg and decided to hide it and she did have a lot of second thoughts. She wanted what was best for her daughter so she didn’t want moon to be raised in such a horrible place. She pushes moon to get out of her comfort zone witch is normal and kept asking herself if it was the right decision. When she saw moon again she was so happy.

      Fairly muted to be honest? There are a few good examples here or there, but the main focus when it came to parental figures it seems was mothers. Morrowseer would’ve probably been a bad father? Maybe. Actually hard to tell because his only characterizations was to be the antagonist. Never saw anything on his personal life with secret keeper. Then again he was a master manipulator and his only real goal seemed to be securing his tribe a future where they still held some power, which I could see going either way on his parenting.
      Artic
      Gill, accidentally put the blame on turtle yet I personally don’t blame him to much as it was just an all around bad situation.
      Clearsights dad, I think the only thing he was really mentioned in outside of a few lines was something about eating rattlesnake?
      Fathom seemed pretty good from the little we saw, his own trauma might rub off on em though.
      Scarlets husband? I’ve yet to read the guide but what little I know of him from the wiki he probably wasn’t involved much. I forget his name
      Smolder seems to want to try and I’ll give him that. Nor was his absence his fault.
      Don’t know anything of oasis’s husband, least don’t remember much.
      Vulture seems absolutely lovely. 10/10. Absolutely no faults to be found.
      Narwhal just was.
      Ivy’s father
      Wrens father
      Can’t think of many more that were more then implied or background characters.

I never noticed the whole thing of bad mother figures being balanced out by good ones, it's quite an interesting detail, which adds an interesting undertone I think. I never like calling Cattail a bad mother, she’s just not a mother. It’s what she was taught and what instinct tells her to do. I enjoy the mudwing difference since it shows how the dragons were once somewhere in their evolution, just like any wild animal. I think the book even says she’s not trying to be mean. I mean not to say it’s good but for the Mudwings it’s normal.

    The female thing in Earth Dragons could be based on the behaviour of many species of mammals or birds, where two males would fight over females using either physical strength or elaborate displays. It isn't very right when put into a sentient and sapient view, but if Earth Dragons are written to still be like wild animals, it would make sense. (Although dragons give me the aura of mating for life like eagles)

    One thing on the topic of mothers in wof I noticed is that even good mothers aren’t actually as good as they should be. Coral is good to her daughters although sexist, neglectful and overprotective. Secretkeeper left her child alone in the rainforest and raised moon to see her power as a curse. Thorn left Sunny in the desert even though hybrids are in the scorpion den, plus shes fine with Qibli working as a kid, maybe because he’s not actually her son so she doesn’t wanna act TOO much like a parent. Glacier is probably one of the best although she said hailstorm isn’t worth trying to save, she had a close relationship with winter so I would assume the same for hailstorm- especially when hailstorm meets expectations better. Sure hailstorm isn’t her son but hers still a child in her family and I feel that the way she treats him may also show a little how she thinks of her own children. I think the best mothers are probably blue’s mothers, I can’t think of any flaws for them

    • @Melonwater648
      @Melonwater648 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I remember in The Lost Continent, they were sorta just submissive and wanted to let Luna get captured. I understand the Hivewings were horrible and everything, but they barely tried to fight even when BLUE saw something wrong with it. Coral, while definitely having a good bit of overprotection to her, is clearly trying to make a better effort. In Turtle's book, she seems much more kind and caring, and is also empathetic to how Gill never apologized to Turtle because Snapper was never in the palace. For Secretkeeper, she had to deal with a magical dragonet with powers that havent been seen for 2000 years- she had a right to be worried! For Thorn, yeah for a dragonet that still needs to go to school.. Qibli shouldn't be working as a soldier in the SCORPION DEN, no matter how cunning he is. With Glacier, wouldn't that just be common sense? To get Hailstorm back, she'd have to launch an attack and risk even more deaths, which, in a war is not good. Also, she probably has a lot more duties that she needs to do other than save one dragonet that is probably dead by now. It's a pretty safe assumption when you've met or seen Scarlet. I think the best mother is Six Claw's mother, who, while we don't know much about, didn't traumatize Six Claws or do anything bad (from what I remember)

    • @Sp-a-rk
      @Sp-a-rk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Melonwater648 oh yeah, forgot about him. The only mother with no flaws ig is the one we know almost nothing about. For blue and Lina’s mother, I feel like even in that type of society, a mother would fight for their child. Usually good mothers are the type that don’t care if something’s dangerous, they’ll risk it anyway if they think their kid’s life is at risk so probably not the best mothers for not trying at all

    Kestrel and Secretkeeper deserve a little slack on this matter.
    Kestrel never got to be a mother because every SkyWing baby kept getting taken away from her. I’m sure that if she actually got the chance to raise a baby SkyWing, she would’ve been a good mother to them. She never saw any of the Dragonets of Destiny as her own children.
    Secretkeeper gave up a lot for the safety and better life of her child. The volcano was horrible and slowly killing all the others, so her courage to hide her daughter in the safety of the rainforest, even though it meant they wouldn’t see each other much, proved how much she wanted the best for her daughter. And she handled the NightWing power dilemma pretty appropriately. She knew and was terrified that if the tribe found out that her daughter had their ancient powers, they would take her away. She made her child afraid of it to ensure that she wouldn’t give away her secret to them, because it could’ve been really dangerous if others found out. Maybe she took the curse thing a little too far, but given the difficult unusual circumstances, I’d say she still did a pretty great job.
    It’s perfectly fitting that Cobra’s name got mentioned twice in that list of bad mothers though. She might be the worst one of them all.

    • @pyronuke4768
      @pyronuke4768 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'd argue that Tundra is worse than Cobra. Cobra was physically abusive and emotionally neglectful. Tundra was emotionally manipulative, demanded strict and nearly impossible levels of perfection from her children just so she and her husband could maintain their status, and when worst came to worst she condemned her least favorite son to die at the hands of her most favorite without a hint of remorse. Cobra seemed to at least deep deep down somewhat care for Qibli when she initially tried to talk Thorn out of buying him.

    • @TrickyTalon23
      @TrickyTalon23 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@pyronuke4768 I think Cobra just wanted to keep Qibli because her father Vulture might punish her if she gave away one of her grandchildren. She only let Thorn take Qibli when she realized Thorn might be even more of a problem if they became enemies. Besides, she was willing to kill her two other kids without a second thought when they got remotely in her way when she could’ve just knocked them out. Tundra is definitely really bad, but Cobra takes the cake for worst parent by letting her children be in danger all the time and actively reminding them that she has no love for them.

    What version of the book did you read?
    Holly wasn't a doe he was a buck, an member of the owsla of the warren the band of rabbits fled in the version i read, do you mean hythanale (cant spell her name off the top of my head lol). The characteristic of the hutch rabbits being especially weak isn't because they were does but because they were domesticated and lacked the survival instincts of the wild rabbits. If you refer to the does from -i forget the name Efrafra?- the reason they are so subdued is because for seasons they were living like literal slaves under the tyrany of the general, the council, and the efrafran owsla. So repressed that many of the does were miscarrying and some were heading down the path of instinctual self termination. Even then a band on them were willing to meet with the council to propose an idea of a new warren, willing to risk escaping even if it ment their death with a band of strangers just for a new chance of life. Thats brave for a bunch of rabbits- does or not- which are generally frightful creatures.
    I understand how it could come off as mysoginistic given that the main cast are a group of bucks, but the story of how they left their doomed warren, adventured across the country, found and settled on watership down before going about their mission to ensure the legacy of the new warren- their mission was to go to efrafra to convince some of the does to join the new warren but that quickly turned into an escape plan when they found out about the horrors of efrafra- heck all the rabbits who originally went did not want to return there for how unnatural efrafra was.
    Yeah folks, what isn't mentioned about watership down is that it is a DARK book featuring cute woodland critters trying their best to survive against all odds. the themes get DARK. Good read though.
