Don't know if you have ever been in the same room when that note was sung by a real contra-bass like Mr Miller but it can be a bit overwhelming.

is it just my ear playing tricks, or does he only drop to a low C at the end there? i remember in another version by him he went to A1, or Bb1, and Pasjukov went to G/G#1. a low C is an odd note for an oktavist like him to finish with.

theoretical physicist Does prevent it all becoming just a party trick, skipping the deepest possible note on which to finish but it didn't give a chest pain the way the Pasjukov recordings do, which verge on the sublime

+theoretical physicist I imagine it might have something to with the fact that it appears to be a high school choir behind him.

***** probably. still odd though, my high school choir's basses could easily do an audible Eb2 and i think in russia deep voices are more common, so they would probably be able to do even more.

A C2 is no problem to an octavist, A1 isn't either. G1 or below, where the volume fades gradually.
Vladimir Miller doesn't only have the low range, but his voice includes the brilliant overtones of every low and lowest note.
