  • Not the obvious choice in the 458 marketplace, but a special car all the same, the SLS now gets an extra 20hp (like it needed any more power) and a sharper chassis. Small beer, but we handn't done a video on an SLS in 2012, and they're just so cool, so we went to Hockenheim.

    No offense, but what imbecile anywhere in the world wouldn't allow Chris Harris as much video time as he wants? If Chris decides to make 20 minute, or 20 hour, videos, he can have every second of the time. He puts 200% into those 10 minutes, and we're happy to have it.

  • @drive
    @drive  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @ShawJohn31, what are you smoking? Check the run times of Chris's latest videos:
    18:55
    4:10
    14:04
    7:24
    19:04
    19:03
    and
    14:58
    As for his releasing videos every Wednesday, Chris has only missed two shows in the past six months.

    Quality vs Quantity. A well done review can be short and it still deliver all that is needed, great shots, noise, writing and delivery. Chris is a great exponent of that. Top Gear realised this years ago which is why filling a full hour of content has become very difficult to avoid repetition.

    This just proves that top gear is wrong on almost everything about AMG's they say they just go sideways and can't corner at all. Well here you go. Chris himself took the standard SLS in 7:29 which was faster than the R8 GT and the normal LFA! AMG mercs are so underrated and VERY misunderstood

  • @drive
    @drive  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, the point being made was that Drive was holding Chris back from releasing longer videos. And the answer is that's not in any way correct.

    No, but there are rumblings that they will allow existing SLS owners get the transmission update. At the SLS-GT announcement, one of their engineers stated they never liked how the gearbox software was tuned. The only difference between the SLS GT and the regular is that the GT has black surrounds on the head and taillights, blacked out trim on the exterior, a different leather color/pattern, and a engine tune and transmission software.

    Clarkson freely admits that he is a crap driver when it comes to outright lap-time so his appreciation of the SLS has always been based around how sideways it can get. I think 80% of people who were allowed to play with a SLS on a airfield like topgear would spend most of their time drifting it too.. A Lot more fun ;)

    I agree about the foot pound numbers, it is quite hard to calculate that mentally for people used to the metric system, ie the rest of the world. As to the translation: +-450 gram per +- 33 cm. Het is een manier om kracht aan te geven, net zoals nm, newtonmeter, niet heel veel duidelijker is. ps: probeer niet het engels te vertalen maar na te denken in het engels, gaat makkelijker naar verloop van tijd. Allebij mijn bachelors zijn in het engels dus ik vertaal niet maar luister gewoon.

    Just shows how useless Clarkson is saying it's too tail happy and doing massive skids with great clouds of tyre smoke coming off the rear wheels and shredding them. Then there's Chris that drove the car beautifully with point accuracy and only didn't a couple of little powerslides at the end. I like Clarkson a lot, he's hugely entertaining and a better drive than most people give him credit for, but he needs to stop making stuff up just for TV.

    depends on what you want. the aventador is faster and looks really crazy. But it's uncomfortable. Narrow inside and wide and hard to handle on the outside. It's very aggressive response could annoy you at some point. The SLS however looks more sophisticated and has better day to day value. It's not as fast and handles not as well, but the sound of the V8 is the best on the world! The gulllwing doors are funky and the car itself is a icon. You decide what to get

  • @player1vladimir
    @player1vladimir 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    People like me are what is wrong with youtube? Really? TH-cam is free, what is so wrong about asking for more than a 5 min review? A car like this deserves it.
    Mistakes which no one notices? Well when someone doesn't know the difference between sheep and viel, turkey and india, make a show about cars and gets the info wrong they deserve to be criticized.
    I am not sure why are you acting like their advocate, but they are being criticized for mistakes, not without reason.

  • @0foxgiven
    @0foxgiven 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm tired of arguing with you...people like you are what's wrong with youtube
    getting great shows for free and asking for more, not caring about the part that was intended to be the point of the video and pointing out mistakes that nobody notices unless they have some sort of mental problem
    You gotta change man, you watch the shows, so start enjoying them for what they are and stop criticizing

  • @player1vladimir
    @player1vladimir 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are others who also test cars for a longer time. Car and driver driven fisker karma. Chris Harris has also better and longer test than this.
    He is allowed to power slide, great, why not put more?
    You know everything how a SLS drives? Great for you, why don't you show us?
    Alex and Leo have more experience than me? When did you see me last time on drive? They have driven better cars than me? How does that make them any better in their job? Why are you defending their mistakes?

  • @0foxgiven
    @0foxgiven 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    that guy is allowed to granny drive, Chris is allowed to powerslide
    I have seen several reviews of the SLS, so I'm not gonna watch another 10 mins of it
    I know everything there is to know about how it drives
    more on Hockenheim, I agree
    Alex has way more experience than you, and so does Leo, and Mike and even Matt, even though he doesn't take it serious! Every single one of them has driven much better cars than you so stop criticizing what they say and enjoy the shows

  • @player1vladimir
    @player1vladimir 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That guy drives the cars as well.
    But here is few things to consider. This video says: SLS AMG GT Hockenheim track test. Are you trying to say that Chris can't make a longer video about those 2 things? First of all this is a SLS AMG there are plenty of stuff to say about it. He made a 14 min video about the nissan delta wing.
    About the other presenters Alex can't tell a difference between sheep and viel, Leo doesn't know where India and where Turkey is.
    Ariel atom engine, and so on...

  • @0foxgiven
    @0foxgiven 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I meant a real review, not a consumer review by someone who is not allowed to drive the car! A review like what Chris reviews, the way the car drives! not about how the back of the shifter has leather!!!
    about the Viper, first, that show is not about specs, it's about cars killing you, so lower your expectations a little
    and the only wrong info I found was the engine power, which is from the 2nd gen, and the tire width...notice that they are not reading off of a spec sheet...but I give you that

  • @player1vladimir
    @player1vladimir 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    As you wish:
    Here is a full name of the 2012 LFA Nurburgring Edition review:
    2012 Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition Start Up, Exhaust, and In Depth Review.
    the video is 30 min long.
    2nd. Here is a thing When they were talking about the cars that would kill you they mentioned the Viper. The whole time they were giving the information about the 1st generation viper which were completely wrong. Example: they said it has 450hp, they mentioned the wrong engine in it, ect.

  • @player1vladimir
    @player1vladimir 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think so... a car like this deserves more than just 5 min.
    Other people who do these kinds of reviews have 20+ min vidoes about cars far less interesting than this one.
    About the 20+ min vids on drive, i was talking about that show, road testament, they make a lot of mistakes when they speak about cars.
    If someone calls himself a car expert, he must know the data correct. I mean it is not so hard to check the infor online these days.

    That's exactly what is all about, and although I live in Europe, I understand very well what you say because I know Muscle Cars are like any other car : it rides the way you build it. there's no such thing as inner hidden performance that exists in particular cars LOL.
    But like I said, most people here don't think that way and keep to the standards. But to those people, I tell that the 3 fastest production cars on the Nürburgring come from the Pacific. Two of them are American. That stings...

    @E1N9A8N0DA 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd be glad to meet you when you come. I've always enjoyed meeting foreign people, it's very nice.
    We Europeans think of US cars that they can only go fast in a 1/4 mile strip, like you should alredy have heard here and there LOL. I don't know how many people truly have Muscle cars in high esteem, but I make a personal thing in making people around me think of US cars, Muscle Cars, as no less exciting cars than Porsche, Ferrari, Alpine, or any other name.
    My fellow fans and friends do LOVE them

    @E1N9A8N0DA 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your compliment honors me my friend. I am a true Mopar enthusiast as I said, and I'm a replica collector, and the Dodge 330 is part of my collection. Sedan, "COLOR ME GONE II" Super Stock car, and the twins "Max Performance Hemi" and "Max Wedge Stage III". Along with a whole bunch of Chrysler legends, from the '57 300C to Plymouth's Rapid Transit System and Dodge's Scat Pack, all the way to the last 1971 HEMI jewels. Not to mention books, American Muscle TV shows, and more. :)

  • @E1N9A8N0DA
    @E1N9A8N0DA 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, you're pretty right LOL. There were only 2 Corvette ZL-1 (Dover W. and Daytona Y.) by the way, and their specs are a secret.
    The 1966 Corvette 'L72' was then the only one capable of beating the RR, clocked by Car & Driver at 12.8@112MPH.
    Fastes Mopar behind the RR was its younger sister, the mighty 1970 hemicuda, which coudn't go below the 13-second range (13.10@107.12MPH)...

    In design terms it is a mid engined car as far as the proportional weight dynamics are concerned. The cabin and engine fall between the front and rear axle in the traditional supercar sense. All the V12 ferraris (accept the Enzo) mount the engine right up under the scuttle which in turn pushes the cabin further back over the back axl. Also most cars designed in this way have some sort of transaxle instead of a conventional inline gearbox.

  • @Sj1bby
    @Sj1bby 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pound-feet what? I Would really appriciate to see the translation for that. Mabye J.F. Musial (love your work) can put the lb-ft = Nm in annotation's in the video.
    I find it hard to get a feeling for lb-ft numbers. This is because I'm dutch, so while listening I'm translating what is being said, this is going quite well. But then with those numbers I have to start calculating+translating=losing the story very quick.
    I mean no negativity, just positive feedback

  • @E1N9A8N0DA
    @E1N9A8N0DA 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, Ramchargers opened the way, and the Hemi entered history. The Dodge Daytona and the Plymouth Superbird flew past competition, with R. Petty.
    In fact, by "legit", I meant homologated for use on road and street. Driving a Hurst HEMI Dart in San Francisco like it was a grcoer's car is a pretty bad idea... LOL

  • @E1N9A8N0DA
    @E1N9A8N0DA 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, but as the Cobra and the 'vette, the Street Machines are not exactly "legit" muscle cars.
    Anyway, it just shows perfectly what you said : US cars were already showing prowess and fascination European/Asian cars just started to show for the past decade.
    I still have a smile thinking that a 1969 Yenko Nova blows away a 1990, 4-wheel drive Diablo VT. ^ ^

    1:19.6 is the laptipme of the sls roadster in the top gear track , that is a very respectable time (1:19.1 - Ferrari 458 time), this one probably even a bit faster, so by no means its a slow track car ...in fact looking to the laptimes board in top gear shows its faster then cars supposedly more trck oriented and more expensive.

    SLS Black Series is not better than an Aventador, numbers say it, BUT it is limited edition so over time it will be something special. Also, it will draw lots of attention :) The 458 has become too mainstream and the McLaren is cool, but the SLS Black is better

    It's not even slightly based on Viper. Merc started all over again, so now the Viper and SLS are of a completely different character.
    And may I remind that this year Mercedes won FIA GT1 and GT3 championship, adding their victories on GT category to 37 since their first involvement last year.

    Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series. Wait for it a couple of months, and you'll see why it is a better choice than those listed above. 631 HP, beautiful chassis and looks, as well as engineering. If you are more into V12's a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta is a good option.

  • @Boredout454
    @Boredout454 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    yea they dont like to hear that about American cars.Also, and you would know if this is true or not, in the US we like to make our cars specific to each owner, we will work on our own cars and change it how we like it. In the US we see a car for sale or muscle car and we want to know how much power we can get out of it once we mod it. In Europe they dont seem to work on there cars as much and dont seem to realize that the car can be modified past what the production car made. If that makes sense

  • @Boredout454
    @Boredout454 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haha true but my family owned a performance shop near Carrol Shelby's place here in Fort Worth Texas back in the early 60's (raced at a drag strip called Green Valley, was famous back then had the biggest prize purse in the country) and we did actually use a few of those Hurst Hemi darts and Cuda's as daily drivers. Unlike Ford where you had to be put on a list and be sponsored by Ford and then chosen from the list to get there racing cars and engines. Mopar was like here buy it use it!

  • @Boredout454
    @Boredout454 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are several here in Texas along with mine I know of at least one other within a mile of me. My next project is probably going to be a 69 1/2 Roadrunner 440 sixpack. Was the fastest stock full bodied muscle car (faster then the LS6 454 Chevelle). People dont realize today that when you see those times of muscle cars saying they ran 13.5 or 12.9 that it was on those 7 inch wide polyglass tires which are 100 times worse then todays belted tires.

    I realized this morning that I hadn't seen a Chris Harris video in a while and figured he was just taking a break. The lord has spoken.

    Clarkson only deals in extreme opposites like amazing and crap. For him there is nothing in between. It is called being a simpleton.

    Hey Chris, I would love it if you could drive the Mazda 787B. I know that would be next to impossible, but I'm crossing my fingers.

    Fairly civilized? They just said they'd like to meet up sometime and talk about cars. That is the most civilized I've ever seen.

    I was under the impression that this car was crap in the corners. Is it just that Clarkson has a heavy foot when going 'round?

    I'm watching this because I want to know how the SLS drives, and not because I have fantasies about Chris Harris at night.

    Humans think that racing fast cars on race tracks is "fun". The feeling is the opposite of having a winter depression.

    Could be, seems to me that the other presenters on this channel are quite jealous when it comes to Chris Harris.
