Stephen Colbert truly does the American people a public service by having guests on who hold positions of power in our country, from both sides of the aisle, and asking them important questions and most importantly, _letting_ _them_ _speak_ . We're getting informed, we see another side of these important public figures, and Stephen still keeps it entertaining. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, i know not everyone cares about these matters, but for those of us who unenviably and unduly stress about politics, the news, and global events, Stephen is a godsend, whether one totally agrees with him or not. Be it President Obama or Chris Christie, there's going to be an intelligent, respectful, lively conversation where different viewpoints are heard and discussed, and I think that's so valuable. Obviously this shouldn't be viewed as a news source, but the extra context conversations like these bring is invaluable.

Many people were repressed, millions starved, and the Ukrainian language was suppressed. The secret of our courage is simple - we do not want it to happen again. I really wish there was something i could do to help, i took part in protests when there were protests, but now they are all supressed, and protesting alone would be suicidal and useless. And with the majority of Russians believing this propaganda it feels rather hopeless to try to change their minds. I wrote "No war" with a marker in one public place, where i could avoid being detected, but that's about it.

I was so confused when I began listening to this but at first couldn't figure out why.
I figured it about about a minute in: this is what competence sounds like. SoS Blinken is thoughtful, transparent, honest, calm, respectful, other adjectives I can't think of because let's be honest I'm an American and we don't exactly grammar well.
The way the previous administration carried themselves, from the president, who we somehow elected and likely will again, to all those in his orbit, was with unearned bravado and arrogance with seemingly no idea what they were doing. Ha seemingly. The continued utterances of "Trust me," and "We'll let you know," was unnerving, frustrating, infuriating, etc etc etc.
Obviously Blinken isn't completely open and didn't share a great number of details, but damnit this was great to listen to.

I think one of the big failings of this interview was Secretary Blinken did not lay out why the American people need to care about the war in Ukraine. The reasons are very real and very meaningful. The cost of grain will skyrocket, poor countries will start starving The cost of what they sell with skyrocket, cost of oil will skyrocket, the cost of computer chips with skyrocket, the cost of high-tech machinery and thus low tech machinery will skyrocket if Russia gains control over Ukraine. It is an incredibly important geo strategic country in terms of resources. Those resources directly affect the American consumer.
Even if you don't care about Ukraine from a humanitarian perspective, God forbid, at the very least, you should understand that it has a material effect on your life.

Well said, although I support Ukraine because they are a sovereign nation expelling an invader. But the economic reality is exactly as you say. Ukraine is the source of many things folks don't even think of....like sunflower seeds for oil and as a condiment to salad. Why do I know this? Because very often now there are no sunnies in the bulk sections because of this conflict. Sunnies are one thing and I could do without them forever and would trade them in a heartbeat for the safety and security of the Ukrainian people.

Everyone thought that the war in Ukraine would be lost after three or four days. We also thought the Afghan army would be able to hold off the Taliban for at least a week. Wrong on both accounts.

In ten years time Ukraine will, thanks to support and investments from the west as well as a real diversified and true market economy, be doing much better than Russia (wich is absolutely imploding) with a far higher GDP per capita. I believe we will talk about ”the Ukrainian economic wonder”, just like we did in regards to Germany after WW2. (Partly thanks to the Marshall plan)

"One country trying to decide what the other country wants, not them" coming from a US politician is quite the hypocrite soundbite no? I am all in favor for how the world is supporting Ukraine, but the US could use these events to have some introspection on what happened before.

The US is deeply divided, uneducated, and insular. It's not capable of any serious introspection. It's really hard to predict where the US will go as this is almost entirely dependent on the internal evolution of its society. Outside pressure will do little as there is highly concerted efforts to resist any outside influence.

@@chriswatson7965 I can't argue some of your points. There are some in the US who are educated and try to look at things in a global context. From the outside I'm sure there is concern about being involved in anything with the US after the craziness of the last administration and its threat to try again. I can tell you that the majority of the people do not want to return to that place ever again. Unfortunately, the framers of our Constitution set up a system that gives more power to the minority of voters. Therefore, the return of Putin's puppet is a fear we have as well. I know that makes it difficult for other nations to trust us.
