Since Cassidy first mentioned using 70% isopropyl alcohol, I've been using this spray on my indoor succulents whenever I see any evidence of bugs, and it works! Thanks for suggesting this safe, easy method.
Appreciate the video on getting rid of Mealy bugs
Can You please also show me how to get rid of the stuff on my succulents that you called “scale “ my infestation of Millie bugs and the scale has to be from bringing new succulents home from the store? I did not know I needed to separate them for a few weeks
thanks for the help
I’m honestly so thankful that this treatment is so cheap and so simple. And SAFE. It’s also crazy that out of all things, it just needs alcohol!
I used the 70% isopropyl spray on all my succulents when I had an infestation on a new plant I brought into the house. Most of my succulents tolerated the spray with no problems whatsoever, but there were a couple that were damaged by the alcohol, and one even died from it. (No infestation on these, it was preventative.) Not sure what variety of succulents I have that didn't like the alcohol, but I have since heard several others mention that there are a few types that don't do well with the spray.
Just wanted to say that I have sprayed and q tip directly onto plants and some have died or lost leafs as you mentioned. Not all tolerate it. Although presumably many do. I presume the smaller thinner leafs suffer the most.
Perfect timing, as I’ve my first case of Mealies!
Good luck!
My turn today... 😞 ugh.
Whenever i see mealybugs, I apply your suggestion, alcohol. It always works, thanks for the tip
Yep, it works! They do tend to start coming back after several months, but a quick reapplication does the trick. Thanks!
I have roughly two hundred Succulents and I like to uproot, pour it on holding the plant sideways over the sink. I let it sit for 5 min, I rinse extremely well, set on a terra Cotta saucer in front of a small fan overnight to dry thoroughly. I wash the pot in hot soapy water, replace with fresh new soil and then repot the next day. I do this with all new succulents coming into the house. I also do this with succs coming back inside for winter because I don't put out every succulent in summer. I use Bonide systemic in my trays of props in the house mealies Love babies. This is actually a great start for them as they get used to it right from the beginning. I cut the systemic by half. Happy Planting and thanks for all your great advice.
Great system!
Haven't had the mealybugs yet but I am ready with this inexpensive, safe readily avable solution:) thanks.
I use this or Neem oil on all my garden/succulent chewing pests and they both work. Alcohol is a lot faster on the mealy bugs.
Just found a few of these little buggers on my new jade plant. Definitely gonna try this out!
Cassidy, this is the BEST. Bought it in the grocery. Bugs were black dots and having a food-fest on my Jade plants. One go-around got rid of most of them. Mine were little black dots on the leaves. Really watch for them now. Thanks so much, Bobbie
Roberta Finley thanks for sharing this! I have little black dots on my Jade too, and I wasn’t sure if they counted as mealy bugs. I’m glad to hear it worked for you!
Are those also mealybugs? As I have little black dots on mine to! But the worse thing is there irritating my skin!!
I just found i had a plant with a while bunch of these little awful things. Thank you for the life saving advice! I love your channel!
Thank you so much for doing this video. I've been used rubbing alcohol with q-tips, and man, what a pain. It's so hard to see between leaves, and I'd usually snap one off. Using a spray works so much better, and a lot quicker! Thanks again.
Glad it works for you! :)
I experienced the same thing with the qtip. I’ll be using the spray bottle too.
I like to use the thin plastic pollinator sticks u find at grow stores but theirs this tooth health thing that's sorta the same thing u can find with all the floss stuff and they are the exact same thing little fuzzy on the end perfect for holding a few droplets if alcohol and getting in-between those compact heads. Or self hybridization succulent projects or simply pollinating your tomatoes qtips work well to first remove the masses then hunt em down with those thinner sticks....WE WILL GET THEM ALL ONE DAY DEATH TO ALL MEALY BUGS CHARRRRGGGEEE(BEEN GROWING SUCCULENTS FOR 14 YEARS STILL DAILY ISSUE) ITS LIKE FLYS IN YOUR HOUSE GOTTA LEARN TO JUST LIVE AND CONTROL IT
I've been doing this every time I find mealybugs. It seems like I find them about once a week, but on different plants that aren't particularly close, and no more than a couple at a time. Eventually I'll get them all!
Yes YES WE WILL
Omg I wish I found this months ago. I made an arrangement and one by one each succulent got destroyed. I didn’t know what was wrong with them so I could search for anything specific. Now I know. Thank you!
So glad you know now! Glad it helped :)
How frustrating to get mealy bugs on your succulents but nice to know there is a solution, isopropyl alcohol. I'm going for this simpler method. Thanks for all you share with us.
Took me a little too long to find this trick, as I’ve already lost one of my succulents to the bugs. Now my other ones are showing signs of bugs also, so I’m crossing my fingers that this works!!
Good luck! It may take multiple rounds of treating it with the isopropyl alcohol, but it should help!
Super easy! I use tweezers and little paint brushes to clean them. Thank you!
I just took my echeveria succulent ( think I spelled that right !) Out of my window today when it had its recommend amount of sunlight and saw these nasty bugs on it! I was surprised since it's an indoor plant only BUT I got this from a local grocery store so it probably got them there :( thanks for the tip! I got a squirt bottle and 70% isopropyl alcohol now I hope it works and my plant handles it well! :)
I was a little worried about using alcohol if its safe. But then she mentioned alcohol will evaporate quickly so I am 100% convinced now! Im gonna save my snake plants
My favorite Echeveria was brutally attacked by mealies last night! I just wanted to drop by and say thanks for the tip! I was sitting at my desk next to it and I looked over and all of a sudden mealies had made their marks on the plant, they are very fast bugs. I sprayed it down immediately and isolated it. My echeveria seems to have lost it's bloom and some new growth, but it has perked up and I think it will make it. I was surpised to say the least as it had been in the house for over 6 weeks.
Mealies don't attack in one night - if it was mealybugs, you've had them a while. You've just noticed them!
Thank you. I hope this will help me save some mistreated succulent I brought at Wal-Mart and want propagate these plants if I can't save them.
I’ve used this Isopropyl method and it can help. Now I also spray all my plants with Sevin - it finds bugs that I didn’t even see and kills them immediately. I use it in advance and it seems to work well.
I have found a couple of mealy bugs but with your great instruction, I was able to "Nip them in the bud!"
I just found out that my jade plant has nearly bugs and possibly my panda plant 😭 I'm glad I can just use alcohol to get rid of them!
I always thought mealybugs came from over watering too, but recently I'm beginning to think they come from underwatering, more so. Maybe because that has weakened the plant, as you say. (I'm in the UK). Love your videos BTW 🙏🏾💚
Under and over-watering aren't an issue - at least in my experience.
Once you have them though, if you have a lot of plants, it's pretty well impossible to get rid of them. They can move quite well, I understand in the 'baby' stage (some baby!) and so they can move to find more of your pots. They also get into the tiniest crevices, dints in wood, and on pots etc and I've literally just found them dozing in a fold in the tarpaulin we're using in the conservatory because it's leaking. Even using a microscope to find them and operating in sterile lab conditions isn't going to help much since even if we could do it for a day, w e couldn't do it permanently!!
So for me, it's a case of controlling them as best as possible. I'm trying this alcohol approach next as I've just discovered a number of my plants now have root mealybug. I found some recently in some pot plants outside. The only common factor would possibly have been using the same bag of compost - which would mean it wasn't sterilized properly. Some more arrived in a pot bought from an EBay nursery I've bought a good few plants from over the last couple of years. I'll probably end up with a super hybrid mealybug which thrives on alcohol and pesticide.
I just finished spraying some on my oldest succulents. Thank you cause I was about to raise hell. My poor succulents!😭
I’m a new succulent owner and I love this method though tip you should also everyday check for mealybugs on your succulents
Very true!
Great tip and thanks for all the good advice! I am a fairly new addicted succulent lover!
Janet, you're a winner! Please email me at info@succulentsandsunshine.com to claim your prize! :)
I recently had my first infestation of Mealybugs but had no Isopropyl Alcohol so I had to order some. Because I know how quick these suckers multiply I was racking my brains as to what temporary measure I could use and I decided to try Winter Tree wash. As it soaks whatever you spray I dipped baby cotton buds into the bottle and applied where I could see the Mealybugs and in any crevice between the leaves and did a light spray on the soil taking care not to soak the stems or base of the plants. Well it worked a treat as they died instantly! I don't know if this method would work as a regular application but it was a surprising emergency solution.
I'm glad to hear it worked!
Got about 64 succulents on sale because they were going to throw them away. All of them had mealybugs and thanks to this all but 4 have survived!
That is wonderful! So glad you were able to rescue most of them :)
You can use meths as well, dabbing it on, but it only gets the ones you can see and is a short-term measure. Also take an eternity on large plants and it's impossible to find them all and get under bark. It saved two decades- old plants but I didn't like using it a lot due to the additives. Alcohol sounds much kinder.
Also works on Hoya.
Thank you very much Cassidy, always the best adviser. I used your method and it worked. But can I spray all my succulents every now and then, even if there is no mealybug infestation, as a precautionary measure?
Wondering the same :)
Yes me too
I appreciate you’re info! I bet mine came in with my new plant or from overwatering. I just isolated it and am about to treat it now. Thanks!
Awesome video! Keep em coming!! I had to treat aphids once and it was an ugly sight.
Lots of helpful tips. Now I can treat my plants instead of throwing them out!
Luckily I haven't dealt with these yet, but it will be good to be on the lookout when I get new plants!
I use this for mealbugs and it does work. The die instantly. Much quicker than neem and soap which I will use as a soil drench. My worry on Isopropyl alcohol is it does dry out the roots, so pouring it on the soil and it going deep down in the pot, it may dry out the roots before it evaporates? I am seeing dry roots at the surface [base of the plant].
The alcohol can dry out the roots. I've also been testing hydrogen peroxide and it seems to help. The best remedy for soil I've found though is worm castings. It's great at preventing bugs from making a home in the soil and seems to get rid of any that are there.
Neem oil can be lethal for succulents (and mealy bugs) so I don't suggest using it for treating succulents.
@@Succulentsandsunshine Thanks. I have a worm bin so I will definitely try that 👍
Tried the alcohol and did an amazing result!
Hi Cassidy. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge! I have a succulent with mealy bug damage. I have gotten rid of the infestation but I'm wondering if it will grow normal again or if it will always be deformed looking? Also how often can you treat the succulent with the alcohol?
Succulents self repair very well being patient is the hardest part u will be er have 100 percent full recovery but I used to chop pop all leaves and prop. Then for new plants but if we are patient the head will just repair naturally especially when it wakes up if this issue happens during dormancy. before I know it the deformed plant lead is replaced with new growth and u will be loving it's new growth and that ugly part just gets shuffled to the bottom if it bothers u asthetically then after full recover and when it's the end or begining of dormancy I prefer right before it goes to sleep for it's period pluck the leaf ,callus, and prop. Under a grow light for a new baby plant could be genetics or strand related weakness so keep an eye on this new little guy and only propagate next to other leaves if your for sure it's disease free. Good luck
If u use the tedious q tip method then I do it daily direct application in pure form dumped into the plant seems crazy and scary and I'm going to read more about that but the wtip method u can do daily I mean I do it's sorta a daily meditation ritual for me to go tend to then with a qtip and alcohol every morning just as I would when just checking or looking over them daily as any good succulent plant mama would . Good luck and their are these little plastic sticks with some fuzzy on the ends for when u pollinate your own or are doing self hybrid pollination on succulents I can't remember the name but they are more effective at getting deep into the grooves of nice compact right heads without damaging the floret and not leaving cottony stuff from qtip behind u don't need to come across it later and cry cuz u been trying so hard and diligently and u think u find a massive nest of them on your baby and it's just qtip cotton.....yes I had 2 glasses of wine and was in full pms pre period mode but damnit I was discouraged thank the succulent gods it was just my dramatic merlot induced perception and not from self defeat hahaha good luck and much love from my succulents to yours here from Oregon xo
I noticed that you had nine thumbs down, don’t understand that. This is a very informative video. My guess is they work for the chemical companies. 🤣
Glad the information was helpful :)
Great information hate bugs!
Thanks so much! Easy solution for nasty bugs. How often can we spray alcohol on the succulent?
You can keep spraying them as often as you see mealybugs. Even several days in a row isn't going to damage your succulents.
Thank you Cassidy!!!! Judy H.
Thank you soooooo much.
Thank you. I think I got rid of the mealybugs but am still keeping them away from others. I did what you suggested. I wonder how long I should keep them quarantined. . . Should I spray them again if I don’t see any more mealybugs? I sprayed them and the soil. . .bout to day ago.
I would say once you are no longer seeing the mealy bugs you should be fine to stop spraying them.
I'm a UC Davis Master Gardener, and the Doctors of Horticulture at UC Davis taught us to use Bayer Fruit and Vegetable Systemic so as not to burn our succulents skin. 4 oz Bayer per 1 gallon of water...treat to a good drink 1-2 times a year. DO NOT LET BEES HAVE ACCESS TO BLOOMS FOR 1 YEAR AFTER TREATMENT... use a red sticker with a date on treated plants....and either remove blooms for a year...or take it inside to enjoy the bloom period..and still save our precious honeybees and other pollinators.
Dawn Dalyce- The Master gardener program doesn't often use organic means when one is available. I've used the systemic you have mentioned and the plants didn't do well after. Someone wrote that it isn't good for plants and stunts their growth. I can attest that is true. Why worry that your sticker will fall off or be lost and you'll kill wildlife. IF it's that toxic, it isn't good for the world. There are poisons everywhere and they have a cumulative effect.
This is the easiest n best way.thanks!!
Hi Cassidy, does the alcohol damage the leaves of the succulent?
No, it doesn't. It's great for treating mealybugs and other pests!
This is great info. I used Sevin spray but it left an ugly film that I had to wash off.
Darlene Mahaffey- Sevin is nasty stuff. Isn't it against the law to use in some states? Yikes.
Thanks! for info. Lovelovelove your channel🌸🌼🌺
thanks for the o next time I I come across these bugs
I will be ready for them
Anyone else watching this during the COVID pandemic laugh when she said alcohol is easy to find 😂
SaferSoap is a great alternative! :)
Succulents and Sunshine what about neem oil? Does it work just as good?
yes! came directly to the comments! 😂
And now expensive as well! lol
I used my absolut vodka awaiting my pesticide order from amazon haha
Very valuable information
Do you ever use diatomaceous earth for mealy bugs? If so, do you have any brand recommendations, or preferably an affiliate link? (always love supporting you!)
Thanks for the support! DE is great for aphids, ants, and other pests, but isopropyl alcohol is best for mealybugs.
Do you just pour it on your soil or do you replace the soil? Thanks!
If an infestation is realllly bad, replacing your soil is great, but you also need to treat the plant because if it's infected, it's going to infect any new soil as well.
Drench your plant with isopropyl alcohol using a spray bottle, and you can also pour some into the soil as well, when it's time to water.
I like to use for mealybug roses insecticide in spray Bayer brand,is amazing in one day you will see the difference.
Decis?
Thanks so much for this useful information! Do you think that this method would work for aphids too?
Yes it will work. You can read more about how to deal with aphids and prevent them in this post:

what about aphids?

I've used hydrogen peroxide 1/2 & 1/2 with water & it worked. Do you add water to the 70% alcohol or use straight alcohol?
You can spray it on straight without diluting when it's 70%.
Succulents and Sunshine how about when you pour it in the soil?
Hi can I use the Neem oil mixed to spray on Succulent
Neem oil will damage most succulent leaves, so I don't recommend it except as a last resort.
Thanks Cassidy! This video is really helpful
I planted succulents very near green leafy edibles. Can I spray this on both the succulents and the edibles? or Ido I need to keep my succulents away from my vegetable garden?
We only have experience spraying it on succulents, so can't say for sure about the leafy edibles.
Alcohol is like gold. Good lucking finding it.
We understand that :) This is a great substitute you can use instead of alcohol.

@@Succulentsandsunshine thank you!
Awesome thank you for this info👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you, I am gonna try. Will this work on ants as well?
Yes, most likely
Hey Cassidy, is it safe to pour alcohol on the soil of a cactus that has mealy bugs? I did actually do this and the cactus started to have some discoloration so I wasn’t sure if you’ve ever tried it and if the discoloration was from something else or if it can actually be unsafe if you use to much?
In our experience it is safe to pour 70% isopropyl alcohol directly onto the soil. It evaporates fairly quickly.
Going to try this on my string of pearls! I've tried other things but the darn things are still there :(
will the alcohol remove the sunscreen succulents create?
As long as you are spraying it, you shouldn't remove it but still possible. If you are wiping, it will definitely remove it
Pouring the alcohol into the soil, doesn't that damage the roots?
It evaporates quickly, and won't harm your succulent roots.
@@Succulentsandsunshine Just now seeing this . Thanks for responding. Very helpful.🌵
Very helpful! Thank you.
I've never had mealybugs, but I will definitely start inspecting my succulents more closely, just in case!
Yes check bc they can come out of nowhere :(
from where i am , 70% isopropyl alcohol is not available in the stores or online but they do have 99.9% isopropyl alcohol.
so i wanted to know if 99.9% isopropyl alcohol will work the same. thank you.
Yes, though I would dilute it, about 50/50 with water.
@@Succulentsandsunshine thank you
Are there other things the alcohol could cure or prevent with my plants?
We love Safer Soap! You can see it here:

Help!!! I sprayed my Jade plant with 70% isopropyl alcohol and it went limp with in a couple of hrs ! 😭 in a panic I rinsed it off with cool tap water everywhere. Now I hope it’s not too wet. It’s in a mix of Bonsai Jack & soil-it-came-in away from sun . What can I do ?
I have had the same issue a couple of times. My most recent one became darker and is losing leaves, though it was fine aside from the mealies when I treated it.
Kathryn Nykamp yes! 😔 I trimmed all of but 3 branches that still looked green and healthy . I wish I could attach a pic. Hopefully those 3 will survive . I don’t understand . I followed the Instructions perfectly
Is there anything else you have to do after spraying the bugs with the isopropyl alcohol? Do you have to wipe the (dead) mealybugs away?
I don't normally wipe them off, but I know some people do.
Just make sure to keep them out of direct sun for a few days so they don't burn.
I have been using neem oil ...it is effective. Though I don't find mealy bugs on leaf r steam...they are mostly in soil r roots..how do I treat which r in soil r on roots?
Try pouring isopropyl alcohol around the base of the stem to treat anything in the soil.
Thank u 😊
Is using a higher percentage isopropyl more dangerous for the plants? I can’t seem to find 70%
You can use a higher isopropyl alcohol percentage. It will evaporate quicker, but it's not a big deal.
Thanks🌈
Thank you for this video it was very helpful I didn’t know what this was until this video. I hope I don’t get them, Butler I do thanks to this video I know how to get rid of them. 👍
hi! is it the same method on cacti? my moon cactus seems to have white fuzzy spots and its looking really dried out suddenly when it was healthy and green only a few weeks ago... is the plant too far gone or will a few treatments of isopropyl alcohol help?
You can definitely give the isopropyl alcohol a try. It won't hurt your "Moon Cactus".

How much water should I mix with the alcohol? I don't want it to be too much water or alcohol.
If you use 70% isopropyl alcohol, you don't need to dilute it with water.
@@Succulentsandsunshine okay thank you!
So you just use straight alcohol or should I dilute it??
I use it straight. Just be sure to keep the succulents out of direct sunlight for a day or two after.
Quarantine related question.... rubbing alcohol is sadly nowhere to be found, meanwhile my kiwi succulent is dying. Any chance hydrogen peroxide might work the same ?? Looking for a friend..
SaferSoap or dishsoap would work better. You can find SaferSoap on Amazon :)
How often should I apply alcohol to my succulents when I see the mealy bugs?
Does not seem to be working well for me! I have 5 plants with mealies and I have sprayed them every day for the last 3 days. Every day I check them again and I find more mealies! I am spraying the plants until they are dripping alcohol, under and around, including the soil. I am so frustrated! Now I can’t replace the 70% alcohol because of the pandemic. Any help would be appreciated!
If there's a pretty bad infestation, it can take a few treatments for them to be eradicated. Another good option instead of isopropyl alcohol is Safer Soap. You can find it on my Amazon page:

Will this kill other bugs? Like mites, gnats? etc....
It will be effective against mites as well and for most bug problems. You can also view this video that specifically deals with gnat problems:
th-cam.com/video/8l27hPiR9os/w-d-xo.html&feature=emb_logo
Is it safe for leaf propagations and cuttings? My leaf props die from an accidental drop of water on them so I'm scared to use anything liquid
Yes the alcohol evaporates quickly so it won't lead to damage. Just keep in mind some propagations and cuttings just don't end up surviving. It could take a few different tries.
So what happens if I spray succulents with alcohol and they didn’t need it? Will it kill them?
No as long as it's 70% isopropyl alcohol it won't harm the succulent
Can u use hand sanitizer?
I wouldn't. The hand sanitizer has other ingredients in it aside from the alcohol. It also wouldn't dry out and evaporate from the succulent leaves which would be problematic.
Akkkkk I found a mealy 💀
Only one so far, can I be so lucky? The indoor plants never go out and vice versa. New plants get quarantined and the soil gets treated with Diatomaceous Earth (whether or not they're repotted right away). I've moved the plant away from the others and doused it in alcohol. It's neighbors seem clean but one neighbor is a cocoon plant, how on earth would I find a mealy on a white fuzzy plant?? So sprayed that one too. Should all new plants be sprayed with alcohol? I worry it will harm them, especially the mail order plants that come a bit wilty.
70% isopropyl alcohol will be fine on your succulents 🙂 As far as new succulents go if you don't see mealybugs you probably don't need to spray them.
@@Succulentsandsunshine thank you 💕
I tried this a few years ago and burned my succulents, so I switched to an essential oil blend but have the same issue. So I'm trying the alcohol again, careful to apply on an overcast day with breezes out of direct light. Hope it works cause I feel so helpless trying to help my little dudes.
Is 50% rubbing alcohol OK?
Its probably because you've put them in direct sun light after spraying the alcohol just put them in a bright shaded area at it will do fine
Other method I use is dish soap and water.
Have used Windex w/success & no problems!
Windex? The glass cleaner???
@@spektred YES! It doesn't hurt the succies!🤗
So is it alcohol and water or just alcohol in the spray bottle?
It's just 70% isopropyl alcohol -- when you buy it, you'll see a percentage on the bottle.
@@Succulentsandsunshine thanks!!!
I typically water my window box indoor succulent garden (planter measures 13x4) every 2 to 3 weeks. A echeveria succulent from a nearby nursery caused my mealy bug issue. This plant died but left behind bugs in the soil and they are killing my string of pearl succulents. I have tried spraying them with alcohol multiple time. If I want to pour the alcohol into the soil, how much do you recommend to use at a time and how often should it be done?
My plan for soil treatment would be to just "water it" with the alcohol, letting all the excess drain out, then save it to pour over (or spray on) other plants. Cassidy, if this is a bad idea, let me know why please before I do it? Thanks.
All I have access to is 90% Isopropil alcohol. How do I dilute it to become 70%?
assuming you want to make 1 Liter of 70% isopropyl alcohol, you will pour 778 ml of the 90% isopropyl alcohol into a 1 liter container and then fill the rest up with water (222 ml). This will make your solution approximately 70% isopropyl alcohol and will work fine.
