  • On a cold, windy but sunny day last week I set off from home to walk the Castleshaw Ring. Climbing up above Castleshaw Upper Reservoir, round behind the quirkily named Broadhead Noddle, I did my first sketch looking along Moor Lane towards the high moorlands. Then I continued on up to Millstone Edge and found a sheltered spot among the rocks to do my second sketch.
    This part of Saddleworth was the boyhood home of poet and historian Ammon Wrigley who liked nothing better than tramping over the moors in all weathers, communing with nature and the elements.
    "Over a hill the west wind loves,
    There lies a quiet glen;
    Far away from the roaring world,
    Far from the haunts of men;
    Out to the south a lordly wall,
    Reared by no human hands,
    A cloud-dark wall that overlooks
    The windy heather lands."

    Platinum Carbon desk pen with Platinum Carbon waterproof black ink
    Faber-Castell water brush (I rarely use this, preferring brushes and water pot but it was very practical in those conditions)
