Capturing the Nature of the Garrigue in a Concertina Sketchbook
After moving here to the Corbières in April, I needed to take the time to settle in the new place and get to know the garden and the wild garrigue landscape we have all around us.
Heavy rain showers in May went some way towards alleviating the two-year long drought in this part of France and the garrigue came alive with colourful flowers and buzzing insects. I started taking photographs of the plants I came across and enjoyed identifying all the species, noting down the Latin names as well as their common names in English and French.
Needing to ease myself gently back into art making, I came up with the idea of documenting my observations in a Moleskine concertina sketchbook I'd had since the Barcelona Urban Sketchers Symposium in 2013 and never found a use for!
The completed sketchbook is just a snapshot of the nature I've observed over a 3-month period from May to August.

An Artist's Life in the Corbières: Spring into Summer
มุมมอง 125หลายเดือนก่อน
It's nearly a year since I last posted a video on this channel... and what a year it has been! In April we moved from not-so-sunny Saddleworth in northwest England to a small village in the Corbières mountains in southern France. I'm easing myself gently into making art in this new environment. In this video you can see me sketching outdoors and painting in my garden studio. I also share some o...
Sketching at Saddleworth Rushcart Festival
มุมมอง 5892 ปีที่แล้ว
It was wonderful to see the return of the Rushcart in Saddleworth after a 3-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Held every August, the Rushcart festival is an old tradition revived by Saddleworth Morris Men in 1975. Morris dancing 'sides' come from all over the country to pull the cart round the Saddleworth villages and dance at each location. The Rushcart festival is always a good opportunity to ...

Painting by the Stream
มุมมอง 782 ปีที่แล้ว
This video is not so much about the art I'm creating - there is no attempt to produce a finished painting. It's really about the pure joy of sitting by a stream in the dappled shade of a sycamore tree, immersed in the natural surroundings. The soundtrack is all nature's... the water trickling and giggling over the stones, birds singing and the occasional crowing of a pheasant. Enjoy! Materials ...
Scaling Up my Plein-Air Painting

Finding and Sketching Ammon Wrigley's Birthplace

    @thatswhatshesaid.literally737 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

If anyone else is experiencing the problem of having too red-leaning of any brown color, add a tiny touch of a dark green (such as perylene green or shadow green) and it will neutralize the reddish tone and you'll have a more "umber" raw umber. 😊

Judith, I just wanted you to know that this is one of the best "how to" videos on painting a watercolor landscape that I have ever watched, and I've watched a lot. I found it in preparation for your zoom class on Sept. 17th, which I realize may now be postponed or cancelled, I hope only postponed. My deepest sympathy on the death of Queen Elizabeth II. For many of us in the US she was our queen also.

Thank you so much, Dory. Your comment means a lot to me. Thank you also for offering your condolences on the death of our Queen. It certainly is a momentous time in our country's history. At this point, I have no reason to believe that the workshops will be postponed or cancelled. People are still going about their business, although some big events like football matches have been cancelled this weekend out of respect. If anything changes I will let you know but otherwise look forward to your joining in the workshop on Zoom.

Glad you asked. Actually it's not the Hahnemühle. Recently I switched to a Seawhite of Brighton Watercolour Travel Journal. It's a UK brand and I don't know if it's available in the US. It's very similar to the Hahnemühle. The reason I switched was that my last Hahnemühle was falling apart by the time I got to the end.
