    For everyone wanting to know how to remove the manifold for cleaning.. There's Three steps.
    1. Take pictures
    2. Remove cables and hoses while taking pictures
    3. Locate bolts/Nuts and remove.

    One of the nicest methods I've seen on youtube that doesn't involve machinery only found in an automotive machine shop or similar..
    Second the concern for keeping that crud out of stormwater drain, etc,

    I did mine with 2l of gasoline then rinsed it with water. Didnt take the gum out so i tried powerful degreaser (applied several times) and just then it was somewhat cleaner.For the sake of being honest lets say it was 90% cleaner but this was as much practical as I could afford cause these cleaners doesnt come cheap. I went through two 1l bottles of heavy duty degreaser. Anyway, my advice is to do this procedure at least once in 100k kilometers and immediately after buying a used turbo diesel car. It really does wonders for fuel economy and responsiveness of the engine at low revs. Cheers and take good care of your vehicles

    Nice video. I just did the same thing with my manifold for my truck. Went to the dollar store for just that reason and bought a few cans for a few bucks. Now people say do not use oven cleaner because the lye, but really its a sand cast piece of aluminum. So really all you're doing is the same thing as the guys who prep their manifolds for a paint job. I've done this cleaning method on my other truck years ago and still my manifold holds up and is still very clean on the inside. Not saying oven cleaner kept it clean after these yours but because I cleaned the gunk and grease and maintained my truck changing the oil and using good quality fuel. The gunk grease and carbon did not stick to my manifold as oppose to one that is very dirty and sticky all that crap has a foundation to stick to. Anyway, I've done this method its easy safe as long as you're outside and gets the job done.

    Hey BMAC, I don't know what oven cleaner is made out of in UK, I'm out here in US so it might be different, but here that stuff is usually made of sodium hydroxide. Aluminum is actually easily destroyed by sodium hydroxide, when they contact each other it almost immediately starts an exothermic reaction that produces hydrogen and sodium aluminate, among other things. It leaves a white powdery substance which is actually the sodium aluminate from the reaction after it wrecks the aluminum..

    • @jaggass
      @jaggass 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +lalem91 I cleaned out my inlet manifold with Mr Muscle cleaner and dried it out and did see a few white spots so painted up the manifold too make it look nice and stop anymore corrosion from happening.

    • @lalem91
      @lalem91 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      michael jagger Yeah, to be honest, I would guess you're probably ok using this on something like an inlet manifold, you might just have to sand the mating surface or something, but it'll ruin cylinder heads and precision aluminum parts like that.

    • @jaggass
      @jaggass 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      lalem91 No i put the manifold in a tray so i wasn't dragging the mating surface on the ground damaging it. The mating surface is fine there was no need to sand it down at all. sanded the ports and polished them up to get the remaining carbon off dried it out, new inlet gasket and its fine.

  • @smokeyjoe4248
    @smokeyjoe4248 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does Mr muscle cleaner damage aluminum? I need to do this but ha e seen comments where ppl say it damages aluminum. I know ppl use it to clean turbos out aswell but maybe there referring to the turbine blades as there quite thin compared to manifold thickness. Great video anyways deffo gona bite the bullet nd get it done.

    A little note to you @BMAC VAG if you put a wd40 straw on the spray nozzel and attach a hose to that you can fill the inlet from the inside by putting tge hose inside and spraying tge oven cleaner in that way

      Same as the jet wash way you have done it buddy the straw just fills the manifold from the inside out instead of spraying it from the outside in once the ports are filled up you cant fill th manifold cos they are kinda blocked

    I figured out a fairly easy way to clean the intake without all the hard work. There is a product called Heat 'n Kleen manufactured by Gold Medal Products for cleaning popcorn machine kettles which get very dirty with carbon build up. It can easily be ordered through Ace Hardware stores. I made a few gallons of solution by mixing this product up; 4 ounces per gallon of water. Put the solution and intake in a large aluminum turkey fryer pot and boiled it for 2 hours on the propane burner for the turkey fryer. The intake came out spotless.

    Just about any automotive machine shop has a hot wash tank that has some kinda chemical in it that really gets these things like brand new clean in like 10 minutes. Its only like ten bucks where I live.

    Oven cleaner contains sodium hydroxide, which reacts vigorously with aluminum. The reaction will produce sodium tetrahydroxoaluminate and hydrogen. In addition, it will eat the aluminum.

    • @rhemyis
      @rhemyis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are perfectly right, on the directions of use of the product says: "Do not use on self-cleaning ovens, microwave ovens, hot ovens, exterior surfaces, chrome, aluminium, zinc, copper, plastic or polished/lacquered surfaces."

    you could maybe clean it the same way you clean the barrel of a gun. as we all know when you fire a weapon the round proppelent aspect of the ammunition produces carbon residue which builds up in the barrel and the trigger housing. to get that clean we used to use very fine cloth that was a realtively tight fit with some strong para cord tied at its centre. and we would simply drag the cloth through the barrel which would wipe away the carbon deposits. as for the trigger houseing.. we used to use boiling hot water to wash away the grease and grime and break down any carbon. im thinking this works for manifolds too as its pretty much the same thing.

    • @sirjolly81
      @sirjolly81 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I gun/rifle barrel is straight. Not so easy with an air intake. The sludge is very thick and will dirty the rag instantly and will take a fair bit of time. I have cleaned a lot of Guns, Rifles, LSW's. The boiling water and dish soap works great for those hard to reach spots especially when an LSW has over a few thousand rounds fired through it. A bottle brush and lots of soaps/brake clean will get it all out.
      In this guys case i would not let the flat side scrape over the cement. It will mark and scatch that soft alloy and could make a bad air seal.

      Take it easy pal, the videos are just a guide to help people. When you go round talking like that for no real good reason, it just makes you look bad. Just saying...

    OM642 3.0 V6 owner, absoultely not a single code although car cant start when its cold outside and runs like crap. I got fed up with it and stayed at the shop for the entire night slowly removing parts of the engine so i can get it off, it had 1cm od clearance from gunk that was inside, i was so relived to finally find what is causing it. EGR will have to go.
    I used your method 2 times but tbh it did not work that well, so i took the car shop floor cleaner and mixed it with water and sprayed on it on, i was doing 5 rounds of my method and it got everything off, god the fuel here is crap

    You say its safe to use on alluminum but it says on the can to not use it on just that?

    Biggest miss here would be......oven cleaner requires heat to activate. Spray it and place in a sealed container. Put container in a really warm area, even in trunk of car, and sit for an hour. It will come out even cleaner

    Oven cleaner is actually corrosive on Aluminium so i would leave it on there any longer than it should be.

    Is there a way you could clean the inlet manifold without dismantling of the car??

    • @jmowreader9555
      @jmowreader9555 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Volkswagen used to do it that way, but crud was getting into the engine and breaking things.

    instead of using oven cleaner, use the Wynns carb cleaner. Same method though.

    • @BMACVAGS
      @BMACVAGS  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer the oven cleaner as it foams up and finds the creases, but you can use anything you wish.

    Is it the same for gas engines? Anything that can go wrong?

    • @rambow70
      @rambow70 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Diesels tend to build up carbon more. I have pulled off intake manifolds from quite a few gas cars and they are just a little black. No real "gunk". Unless you have port injection like a N54 or other german car.

    I have a bkd engine would this be ok to do on my inlet manifold? would it damage swirl flap for instance?

    • @jaggass
      @jaggass 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +bruce L I did this on the BKD engine's inlet manifold last week. it wont damage the swirl flap at all. You need to disconnect the egr valve and throttle body to do this and a new manifold gasket for safe measure

      bruce L I did my manifold last week but sadly during filming my camera died so wasn't able to film it. Ill see what i can do to show you how to do it and what to take off.

    Just did this with Carbon-off oven cleaner. Label says aluminum safe. Sprayed on and watched chemical reaction happen quickly. 30 seconds and done.
