I was a young Kid during his governorship. My family is staunchly liberal and my parents never voted for him. We still idolized him in our home. He represented that we can disagree on political matters without loosing sight of each others best qualities. After he left office he only continued to advocate for important issues and lead the way in building a better world. Arnold will always be an role model for me, the model of what a man should be. Strong, intelligent, and filled with love.

It's a philosophical argument - the idea that children are born innocent and the world corrupts them. I don't believe that. I believe that children don't naturally know the difference between right and wrong. They need to be taught a sense of right and wrong, keeping in mind that those that are teaching them may have very different ideas of right and wrong than what you or I might hold.

What I respect about his job as governor is that he tried a bunch of things, some of which worked, and when it was clear that something wasn't working he tried something else. Sadly, basing policy on reality rather than ideology is not acceptable in the GOP so he won't be in office again, but the ability to learn from experience can't be overrated.

I saw an awesome commercial last night. Has anyone else seen this yet? It was a father and a son, sitting in a car outside of a synagogue. It showed all of these lovely families walking out after service, smiling and laughing. I agree with you, and I think Arnold is surprisingly and refreshingly insightful when he talks about these things. That said, I WAS disappointed by this interview...I feel like he came up short. When Dana pushed him on real solutions or alternatives or even "how did we get here" questions, he hemmed and hawed. He mentioned FOX, but he didn't want to go the natural step and address the role that HIS party and that "news" station have played in creating the hatred "between men and women, black and white..." In the end, other than drawing the very apt comparison of the right wing hate movements in the US and the Nazis of Austria and Germany 80 years ago, he didn't say anything concrete and shied away from addressing the most important issue: how did it come to this in the US?
Being a European with parents who were children during the WWll, I made that connection when tr*** first appeared on the (political) stage. I didn't know that it would come to the attack on the Capitol, though. AS talks about the reasons why, without getting into it, and says it has nothing to do with tr***. Then he could also maintain that the rise of the WWll nazi era had nothing to do with Hitler. Hitler and tr*** legalized the hatred and anti-semitism and racism. They may not have been the cause.

A person from a premier consulting firm who was tasked with briefing Arnold S about economic issues when he was Governor, told me that he was a brilliant student of economics and issues. He read the materials and was always extremely well prepared and asked the key questions. She briefed a lot of high ranking government leaders all over the world and thought he was one of the brightest she had dealt with in her career. At the time, I had thought of him as a body builder and hack actor. Obviously, I underestimated him. He we a decent Governor of our state.
I've had the pleasure to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger in person several times back in the beginning of his career, when Pumping Iron came out and he went on a world tour to promote the docudrama, and he was a extremely nice down to earth guy, and he liked to party! He was certainly not a "dumb dumb" like so many others in the bodybuilder community, he came out as a very intelligent guy, who had goals in life and I must say he achieved all of them with bravour. I really like the guy.
As a moderate Republican, I feel it's just so sad he isn't a born citizen eligible to become POTUS. Lincoln Project should separate from the Republican Party and make their own political party, I can see them being successful, especially in a state like California. Most moderate Democrats are sick of Gavin Newsom, Nancy Pelosi, George Gascón, and Diane Feinstein.

I agree with you, and I think Arnold is surprisingly and refreshingly insightful when he talks about these things. That said, I WAS disappointed by this interview...I feel like he came up short. When Dana pushed him on real solutions or alternatives or even "how did we get here" questions, he hemmed and hawed. He mentioned FOX, but he didn't want to go the natural step and address the role that HIS party and that "news" station have played in creating the hatred "between men and women, black and white..." In the end, other than drawing the very apt comparison of the right wing hate movements in the US and the Nazis of Austria and Germany 80 years ago, he didn't say anything concrete and shied away from addressing the most important issue: how did it come to this in the US?
Being a European with parents who were children during the WWll, I made that connection when tr*** first appeared on the (political) stage.
I didn't know that it would come to the attack on the Capitol, though.
AS talks about the reasons why, without getting into it, and says it has nothing to do with tr***.
Then he could also maintain that the rise of the WWll nazi era had nothing to do with Hitler.

I'm 80 and was raised in a family that never, ever said anything bad about any race or religion! We just didn't do that! It was live and get along and work together! I am not capable of understanding hate! That word was never used in our family! Also, we were not religious at all. It was a secular existence and being secular does NOT embrace hatred. A person from a premier consulting firm who was tasked with briefing Arnold S about economic issues when he was Governor, told me that he was a brilliant student of economics and issues. He read the materials and was always extremely well prepared and asked the key questions. She briefed a lot of high ranking government leaders all over the world and thought he was one of the brightest she had dealt with in her career. At the time, I had thought of him as a body builder and hack actor. Obviously, I underestimated him. He we a decent Governor of our state.
I've had the pleasure to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger in person several times back in the beginning of his career, when Pumping Iron came out and he went on a world tour to promote the docudrama, and he was a extremely nice down to earth guy, and he liked to party!
He was certainly not a "dumb dumb" like so many others in the bodybuilder community, he came out as a very intelligent guy, who had goals in life and I must say he achieved all of them with bravour. I really like the guy.
As a moderate Republican, I feel it's just so sad he isn't a born citizen eligible to become POTUS. Lincoln Project should separate from the Republican Party and make their own political party, I can see them being successful, especially in a state like California. Most moderate Democrats are sick of Gavin Newsom, Nancy Pelosi, George Gascón, and Diane Feinstein.
I wasn't a fan of his politics in the past, but the times have changed and now the left and even moderate Republicans are on the same side. Intelligent Republicans aren't afraid to admit that climate change is real and that fascism is the most anti-American movement possible. I don't welcome those Republicans to our party, however-- I want you to take your party back from the wing-nuts!

In this interview Arnold is exhorting the values of civil discourse and a genuine respect for history, even when it's painful and ugly. You don't have to be a perfect human, nobody is, you just need to have some humility and a persistent desire to forgive. Hate, anger, and fear may prevail in the short term, but over a long enough timeline, love always wins. It's just that, there really doesn’t (shouldn’t) have to be so much loss in the meantime. Arnold is proof positive that aging well isn't just about how someone looks. He's gotten wiser and wiser over the years. If the republican party was a majority of people like him, they'd have a much better chance of getting into office. As it stands now, he's old school; Lincoln or even an Eisenhower republican. I'd actually vote for someone like him because, while economically we might disagree, he's a true leader. It is a shame he wasn't born in this country because he'd be an excellent president.
