    Well, this is really interesting. It’s odd, but I haven’t used my hands and wrists in the swing for a very long time. I’ve been trying to work on the drive/hold idea and I’m very inconsistent with contact and direction.
    Went out yesterday and let myself be loose and tension-free and allow the weight of the club guide the body.
    What a difference. I could actually feel the club again. I had a follow through. I felt like a combination of Tony Finau and Fred Couples. It was easy and fluid and felt like a golf swing instead of forcing the club to do things.
    What a relief! This could be a game changer. Now to get that tennis racquet/ steering wheel happening.
    Great lessons and so clear. You should mentor Sean Foley 😉

    I've worked hard to emulate Moe Normans move and can perform it with pretty good results. but if I was going back to the conventional swing you could not get me to the range fast enough to start building a swing based on his instruction . Great instruction IMO !

    I find the key to this is the right hand drill at 0.32 , this is how the downswing works and you have to do it 2 handed, instead of only with your right hand.

    I'll admit the first time I watch this downswing move I thought you were crazy. Then I started working on the hockey drill and started to believe that the hands have to come in and the club head out for the club face to meet the ball square. I have taken so many lessons where they wanted me to pull the handle at the ball. I have never felt comfortable with my swing and I didn't improve at all. I was hitting balls with your method this week and the contact and distance is something I have never felt before. Thanks so much for posting this information on you tube. I feel like I actually have the knowledge to improve.

      Same here. I veered away from this but decided to try again but this time, I made sure my hands-in were more exaggerated. Closer to my body and it worked very well. My driver was straight...not very long but I'm sure I can work on that. My irons were pure. The only thing I'm not sure is, must I have a stronger left hand grip (I'm right handed)?

    • @bobmcglone6676
      @bobmcglone6676 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dany1247Mike has a video on Utube about the grip. He basically said you should have a strong three or four knuckle grip with your left hand ( bend slightly over, hanging your arms naturally. Your club would fit in your left hand as it naturally hangs) It prevents it from rolling over with your palm up. Check it out.

    I just wanted to thank you Mike for this excellent instructional video!! At 63, I am returning to the game after a 15 year layoff and re-tooling my swing away from a rotate back - rotate through swing of the past. I have had lessons and my take away is modeled as you point out in this video. However, I have been struggling with consistency of strike. At times I absolutely stripe the ball but could not put my finger on exactly why my downswing fell apart more often than not. This video has me on the right track to building a more consistent downswing. Thank you, Thank you!!!

    MIke this is unbelievable. The concept of feeling like your are pulling away from the ball just changed everything for me. I never understood what clearing the hips was and now I think I do. After doing the pulling away from the ball my feeling is that my lower body is literally moving out of the way for my hands to drop in front of me. This instantly fixed my impact position where my hands are clearly in front of the ball. I'm going to buy your book for sure!

    Does anyone else think this is in complete contradiction to the plane mate ‘shallowing’ move in which you resist relax rotate , the relax move drops the club back and into the slot. This move almost makes me feel like you seem to cast/slam it to the left? it’s almost the polar opposite to the plane mate move?

  • @robertknopp1065
    @robertknopp1065 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Absolutely perfect lesson for my swing. Club behind me, consequently very in to out with it's problems. Impossible to find the bottom of my swing. One simple move changed my ability to get long irons (hybrids) up in the air again. However I still have issues often keeping weight back and early extend too often. I just can't get the feel feeling the body moving away from the ball after early extending for the last several years. The thing I like is that I'm not thinking of six different things over the ball and everything just seems to start together. I'm not sure if I've ever hit so many solid shots and I have never been higher than a 7 until two years ago. Almost 60 years of single digit play and I will be back there again soon. Just got "I feel your pain" on kindle. Thanks so much.

    Mike, great video. This really simplifies things. At about minute number 7:00, you quickly mention to Monica that she tipped the toe out instead of working the heel out. Can you explain what you mean by this, not sure I quite understand that concept.

    • @Jake_Cotumaccio
      @Jake_Cotumaccio 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is super late, but look at the logo of the glove on her right hand when he demonstrates the correct movement of the heel going out. The logo is facing up and behind her. Also, you can barely see her left hand because it’s covered by her right hand.
      When done incorrectly (with the toe tipping out), the logo on her glove faces up and AWAY from her. Her right wrist has completely flipped to the point where you can now see her left hand underneath it. That’s the same motion he references when he’s saying how people try and flip the club head right before impact to square it up.

    I finally get what Mike was describing.
    The most important thing for me is keeping the right hip back as long as possible or keeping it out of the way so my hands can come down in that empty space.
    The steering wheel analogy was a lil confusing at first but the idea is when u make a left turn with both hands on the steering wheel, the right hand come around over the top of the left hand.
    I think Mike was describing how the right hand come over the top of the left hand when u come down toward the ball.
    Thats what it feels like.
    All I can say is, keep going to the range and experiment with it. I promised u once u get it, U will thanks MIKE a million times.
    Once u have that swing down, the trick is to swing REAL easy and watch that ball flies straight in the air and land w/in 6 ft from the flag.

But now I am into my 70's and my handicap ballooned to a 28. Then just by watching your videos I have dropped back to a 22 and hope to go lower. The on area that still confuses me is the backswing AFTER the early part where you keep the club head outside the hands and facing the ball as you have indicated. But after that, I don't understand what happens. My wrist cups back there and yours stays flat. I don't know what's going on back there.

    Mike, I have played for more years than I care to admit and I have struggled with the "pull the handle through" approach for far too long. After watching this video I did nothing but practice this swing for two weeks in my back yard (no ball). I then went to the range for an hour and was immediately making the proper club to ball contact using only enough strength behind the swing to get the club around (letting the club do all the work). I finally played my first round after learning this swing and dropped 6 strokes from my game. Without a doubt I know my game will be in the mid 80's, breaking 90 for the first time, the very next time out. Thank you for doing so much to help make this not only a great game but also enjoyable (now that I can actually make birdies) !!!

  • @larrykokoszka
    @larrykokoszka 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I first watched this, I was thinking "no way". It goes against everything I've learned. After two sessions working this on the driving range, I dropped my score by 12 strokes (would've been more if not for an uncharacteristically bad day chipping) and added 30 yards to my drive. I'm a baseball player who has been told my whole life that I have to forget everything I know about swinging a bat when I'm on the golf course. This feels just like pulling a fastball into the gap which gives me a lot of confidence off the tee. Thank you Mike! The one thing I have not figured out is how to correct a slight push I get every once in a while with my irons. It's only off by about 15 yards but keeps creeping in. I saw your 'how to avoid pulling the ball' video. How do you correct - or what causes - a push with your swing? Sometimes it's a slight push sometimes a push fade.

    • @Spudroe
      @Spudroe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's two things that could cause that push: 1. You aren't giving your hands enough room through the hitting zone. You really have to push your hips away with your legs. Chances are this early extension is the culprit so in order to make good contact you'll slide forward a little; 2. You're not keeping your back to the target long enough in the downswing transition and that causes you to be just a little late at impact which causes the face to be a little open. It's such a momentary amount of time but it allows you the time to get the club back in front of you. It took me some time on the range but once I got it, the swing feels effortless.

    Dude..... Mike is by far the best Golf Instructor on the Planet he should be Golf Instructor of the Year every year he literally in the first 10 to 15 seconds of this video had this woman swinging like a Pro!!!🤘💪🤘💪🤘

      I’m pretty sure Monica was already a pretty good player and that she had taken multiple lessons from Mike prior to this video. Mike is good but there are other instructors Better in my opinion.

      @@ablgolfmom6211 I've been watching Mike for a while and he is the only Instructor that I've seen that really seems to want to help and simplifies it. Some of these other instructors have like elitist mentalities and make it more complicated then it has to be in my opinion!

      Phil Saraceni I agree Mike has passion for teaching. I just don’t understand his tipping idea. It makes everyone hit it left unless they aren’t successful in tipping it out. Golfletics explains the swing in a way I can understand and his students have imitate success as well.

    I've been playing for 50 years and have many lessons during those many years. But i've gotten worse instead of better. Your short videos, and this one 9 minute video, in particular has virtually changed my swing overnight.....no kidding...from the mid 90's to low 80's. I am 75 years young but feel like I am 50 years old again. I really appreciate your work Mike...I just wished your were closer to Austin, Texas.

    You probably won’t see this but thank you!! After watching this, I watched a couple more on this principle, I’ve been struggling with consistent ball striking for years. Following your advice I’ve just hit 50+ balls cleanly and consistently, first time ever! I’m not throwing a party yet as I fear my muscle memory will take time to eradicate the old swing, but I came home with a big smile! … In case you do see this, does this principle apply to driver too? Huge thank you again 😊

    One thing that definitely helped me with Mikes videos is listening out for the word "feel". Remembering that all these moves are "feels". Don't get to caught up on trying to see the move in your swing, if you are videoing yourself. You need to realize that this is all about "feel". If you "feel" it, it will be become "real". thanks mike you are the man!!!

    I really like this lesson. It has really redirected how I swing the golf club back to when I started playing many years ago. Somewhere along the line I started playing squares and that led to back problems. So, finding this to get me back to an effortless, strong golf swing has really been helpful. I'm back to a 5 handicap and that aint to bad for a 74 year old vet who got shot in the legs when he was an infantryman. You are the best Mike.

    Outstanding video. Golf Swing simplified into an easy to understand athletic movement.
    Provided you get your set-up and grip correct you are well on the way to many good shots.
    Thank You & Cheers

    I just to come across this older lesson in Mike’s site. I agree with the rational of the the club face inertia closing/squaring the club head face on the down swing but if you keep the face square (same as address) on your backswing( even during the lift) there is no need to even have to worry about the club face on the downswing. The inertia of the “drop”will bring the square club face into the back of the ball on the downswing with having to worry about a manipulation of the hands and arms for squaring purposes.
    Am I off base?

    If you have trouble with the steering wheel concept, when you get to the top just push your hands away from you, backward along the target line, and the club will tip and angular momentum will take over. Don’t pull the handle. As counterintuitive as it sounds, with your head as 12 o’clock and your feet at 6 o’clock, make your first move out toward 10:30, not downward. The club starts to catapult. Ben Hogan described the start to his downswing this way: “I feel like I’m taking an arrow out of a quiver.” Imagine a right-handed archer with a quiver strapped to his back. The arrows are sticking out just above his right shoulder. Reach back with the right hand and grab one. Which way would your hand move to pull it out? Not down-the arrow wouldn’t come out. You pull toward 10:30 or 11:00 o’clock. Try it and feel the club shoot by you.

    I have looked through 100's of PGA Tour swings and I don't see one player start the downswing by standing up the club. Probably a great feel for people that really suffer from getting the club stuck inside. Also, notice how all his students - pro's and amateur's, including himself - are always putting a peg under it ? Skeptical

    I’m 83 years old and have tried to master what I call the Malaska move. When I do it correctly I shoot well into the 80’s. You cannot Imagine how difficult it is not to revert to old habits. When I really start to play awful golf I have to stop and go through a memory sequence. Push away from the ball, handle down club head up on the back swing, Handle down club head out on the down swing.
