The Dwarf to Gimli's (the first one who appeared) immediate right was Thorin Oakenshield, the King Under the Mountain and--had he survived the Battle of Five Armies in The Hobbit--the heir of Durin and the rightful Lord of Moria. All four of those who faded in and out were part of the expedition to retake the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug, as was Balin, whose tomb stands behind them, and Gimli's father Gloin (that's his helmet Gimli is wearing) and his uncle Oin. IMO it was a stroke of genius on Geoff and Kathy's part to have Gimli 'summon' the others, three of whom were dead by his time, to sing this with him.

Thanks for your reaction! Voice Play released their cover of "Stand By Me" in November and it is stunning! Voice Play and solo Geoff recently released this year's Christmas covers as well.

All of them are dwarves from the Hobbit movies.... Filli, Thorin, Gimli, Killi and Bofur.
This is the tomb of Gimli's uncle Balin (in the background).
    The song is about Durin.
Originally JRR Tolkien wrote it as a poem.
Clamavi De Profundus, chorus of mostly bass singers, turned it into a song.
Clamavi De Profundus have a bunch of fantastic middle earth type songs. That's mostly what they sing.
My favorites.... The Last Goodbye. Diggy Diggy Hole. When The Hammer Falls.
Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci released their Christmas videos Friday.
    Voiceplay... Zat You Santa Claus?
Geoff..... Carol of The Bells (low bass version).
    Both are absolutely fantastic.

This song has never made it to the movies... In the book, The Lord of the Ring - The Fellowship of the ring, it's sung by Gimli (the first Dwarf in order of appearance, here) during the journey through the Mines of Moria, before the Fellowship arrives to the Tomb of Balin (which is the tomb you see in the background in this video). It was made into a song by Clamavi de Profundis and Geoff covered their song. 🙂
I love Geoff's rendition of this song. It always makes my eyes teary. And almost always I get the impulse of going back to the book and read that part again... As if I didn't know it by memory already 😅.
Thank you for your reaction, I enjoyed it.
And if you haven't yet reacted to it, Geoff just released an EPIC cover of "Carol of the bells"... 🙂
    See you next time!

Thanks for the comments. I have another song from Geoff on my List to do for Christmas but when I saw this one came out I added it as well, so it will be a double bill!

Thanks for this reaction to Geoff's solo work! He is portraying the ghosts of his four dwarves from his Hobbit covers (Thorin, Fili, Kili, and Bofur) and adding the dwarf Gimli (long red beard) from LOTR books. Geoff records the audio at his home studio than he and Kathy film the video after the audio is finished. He actually sings along to the audio track when filming, standing in each position. Then he edits the video together.

as to how many takes - it depends. for the filming? at least once for each character (though usually more, because of messing up). for the vocals? however many it takes for him to be satisfied with it. And do realize with that, there are songs he's done (both solo and with VoicePlay) where that is quite literally one take.

Gimli is the center dwarf and from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings which is a later time frame than The Hobbits, Far Over Misty Mountains Cold and then I See Fire. Those Hobbits are earlier and you see them trying save things back then.

Geoffs' wife Kathy is a huge part of the costume design, as well as the rest of the production on all his videos. She also is an important part of VoicePlay as well. She keeps all the boys in line and things organized and running smooth.

He works so hard to bring the epicness the song deserves!
An underrated part of his incredible talents is his extraordinary arrangements.

The Geoff with the bow and quiver of arrows that you paused on (2:45 of the reaction) is actually portraying the dwarf Kili, who did use a bow and arrow and was (relatively) clean-shaven in the movies. He's the one who fell for the elven warrior lady.
At the time this scene occurred in the books (it didn't actually happen in any of the movies), Gimli (long red beard, first and last on screen) is the only one actually alive and in place. I think 3 of the 4 others are dead and the fourth isn't physically there - it's why Gimli walks in and out of screen, the others just fade in and out of their places.
Geoff has dropped his Christmas song for the year - his version of Carol of the Bells, like you've never heard it before!

Such a pleasant, thoughtful performance. It really teleports you to their world. I can listen to this again and again. Thanks for the reaction.

I was waiting for your reaction to this one & you did not disappoint 😉
This song is straight from the pages of LotR, Tolkien lets Gimli sing it while traveling Moria. It sadly didn't make it into the Movies.
The first dwarf here with the red beard is Gimly, accompanied by the Ghosts of his ancestors fading in to sing with him & fading out at the end, they are the dwarfs depicted in Geoffs first two dwarf songs.
Well, musically l think it is great, though not my top favourite (but firmly in the Top10 of Geoffs solo work), but it had grumpy 60 year old me literally in tears at:
'The shadow lies upon his toom,
    In Moria, in Khazad-dum' 7:05
I think this is the music l wanna have played at my funeral, hopefully many years from now!
And it is really difficult to narrow it to a Top10, as he just keeps getting better and more awesome. I am no fan of christmas carols in general, but this years offering 'Carol of the Bells' is beyond epic, finally a carol l can relate to!
If you find the time in your schedule to react to it, l would be excited & consider it a xmas gift!

Now l am exited, my guess/hope is 'God rest ye merry, Gentlemen' as the other one, cause that would be a double whammy of epic awesome 😱 @@JennReacts
