In this arrangement, does it stay in 3/4 the whole time? It sounds like a brief shift to 4/4 to me. Thoughts? Also, is that a glockenspiel at the end?

I'm a member of Geoff's Patreon, and he sometimes shares snapshots of his arrangements from the software he uses. In that particular one I could not see if it was glockenspiel or not, but I can tell you that Geoff uses instrumental plug-ins, so it could have been. He does actually play the piano, though, and you can see him do so in some of his videos.

It's always such a joy to watch/listen to someone react to Geoff for the first time, and I am so thrilled that this particular arrangement/video has spread beyond his 'usual' fans and reactors and introduced new people to his extraordinary talent. I first discovered Geoff about 3 years ago when I stumbled upon a video of his acapella group performing the Beatles 'Eleanor Rigby". Geoff's voice was so uniquely deep yet smooth that it immediately stood out to me (and that song didn't even feature him doing any of those crazy low notes he does seemingly effortlessly nowadays). Swiftly went down both the VoicePlay and Geoff rabbit holes and for the first time I was compelled to become a patron of both to help support these talented people.
My dad was a cellist, I had hoped my son or someone else in the family would eventually take it up as well, but in the end my father donated his beloved instrument to one of the local schools. It is often said that the cello more than any other stringed instrument seems to 'sing' to us in a way that is similar to the human voice, and hearing how your beautiful playing echoed what Geoff had been singing really emphasized that fact.
One of the privileges of being a patron of Geoff's is the ability to to attend his video 'chats' about once a month, and it has been really fascinating to learn some of his process in creating his arrangements and his discussion of the technical problems that need to be overcome when recording music that is so far down in the bass clef. His hair may always be 'perfectly coifed' for the videos, but when he is working in his home studio, it is apparently often a sticky, sweaty process as he can't have the air conditioning running (and he lives in the hot and sticky Orlando, Florida area), because any hint of moving air plays havoc with trying to record those deep notes. I saw some people complaining about the audio quality, and I'm sure all it needs is some adjustment in the equipment to clean that up a little, but it may take a bit of trial and error on your part. Regardless, I look forward to possibly seeing you react to more of Geoff's and/or VoicePlay's work.

I have never supported someone on patreon before but I said yesterday that I would definitely support him. I think I would enjoy the discussions you spoke of.
Yes, I recognized (after posting) that the audio isn’t my best. I used a new recording platform yesterday (ecamm live) for the first time and I apparently have more to learn regarding the audio when it is exporting. So, I’ll certainly be mindful of that moving forward.

Geoff is such a gift to anyone with a musical background. He gets so much attention for his crazy deep notes (and his soaring tenor ones), but fewer people appreciate what an excellent arranger he is. He knows just how to add drive and creativity to music, but still maintain the heart and familiar elements of the original song. And if you understand musical theory, what he has to offer is so much richer and more fascinating; I love listening to those who really understand music breaking down precisely why Geoff's music is so intelligent. I know just enough theory to get in over my head, but I have learned so much from smarter reactors than I, and Geoff (and the acappella group where he sings bass, VoicePlay) provides such fascinating and enjoyable studies with every release. And it doesn't hurt that Geoff is very easy on the eyes, and probably one of the nicest, most humble people you could hope to meet. But note his wife Kathy in the production notes- Kathy is the reason we got this song. Geoff wasn't happy with it, and was going to release something else, and she told him no. She's his (and VoicePlay's) production manager, and amazing in her own right.
I hope you'll continue listening to Geoff, and maybe even pick up VoicePlay as well, whether or not you choose to continue posting reaction/analysis videos. It's a rabbithole well worth exploring, and I guarantee you'll have so much fun. I enjoyed what you had to say- we usually hear from vocal coaches and opera singers, so it's nice to have the perspective of someone who played an instrument instead, as you pick up on slightly different things (which is fantastic!)- although there were a few time I had trouble hearing what you were saying; the audio was a little iffy in places. But your enjoyment shone through, and that made me smile. Hope your birthday was lovely, and may your coming year be beautiful and happy.

Welcome to the rabbit hole of Geoff Castellucci. I've suspected his singing is healing but hearing your story, I have confirmation.
If you explore Geoff's catalog as a *soloist" (i put that in quotes because he layers his voice so much he is an entire chorus) or with VoicePlay (check out their Hall of the Mountain King and Classical Chaos videos), you will learn that his wife, Kathy, who was a professional singer also (and does so much of the production on the videos) is experiencing hearing loss. I am sure they would rejoice at learning your story and your reconnection with your cello.

So glad you enjoyed Geoff's "Thunder of the Bells"! It's nice to hear from a slightly different perspective, since most of the professional musicians who react to his work are vocalists, not primarily instrumentalists.
And often it seems Geoff's arrangements get left behind, where I think his skills at arranging are as important as his vocal skills. He arranges about half of the songs for his a cappella group VoicePlay - Layne Stein, their beatboxer, arranges most of the others. So Geoff has been perfecting his arranging skills for nearly as long as he's been singing.
Others have mentioned the audio problem, snd you seem to be on top of that, so I'll only mention there was one short segment near the end where you were saying something but the video was still playing, so I just couldn't make out what you said.
I hope you will continue reacting to music, especially Geoff and VoicePlay, but also any other genres that strike your fancy!

Welcome to the rabbithole of Geoff and Voiceplay. So sorry when i heard about your accident. This must have been hard for you. Just imagining not being able to sing anymore would just kill me. But I am happy Geoff made you take the Cello out again and have fun playing. My introduction was his "far over the misty mountains cold" and since then i am fan and this year i became a part of his and Voiceplays patreon community. They are worth every single Cent one can afford to support them.
This is a very repetitive song origionally, and he normally doesn't like such tunes. But he is such a wonderful arranger and can turn such songs into perfect tunes for his wonderful voice. Just a wizard of music. He is also arranging for voiceplay and takes turn with the beatboxer Layne. They are both wonderful in their arrangements. Layne did their latest which is "Party of your lifetime", a song out of the game warframe. Earlier this year they had another song from this game and the people from warframe saw it and knocked on their door asking if they could do this as well. So there is a lot for you to discover. Have fun on your journey and a very happy new year.

Well happy birthday! Mine was the 25th. 😁
I think you need to fling yourself down the VoicePlay rabbit hole. Geoff and the beatboxer Layne do most of the arrangements for the group, although the tenor Eli has started to do some too. (That’s not “E-lie”, he pronounces it like jelly without the J. )
VoicePlay will not touch a song unless they can take it someplace new. What you said about Geoff surprising you with a pause or such? Yup. That’s pretty much a trademark on all their arrangements. Out of the hundreds of songs they have out there, I think there were like two that were almost predictable. They’ll even write whole new bridges.
I love when they do something I really know well because then I’ll catch all their curve balls.
So yeah…Geoff has quite a bit more available and VoicePlay can keep you listening for days.
VP has done two classical tracks too. “Hall of the Mountain King” was the first, and the second was a melody of assorted classical and baroque pieces and it’s called “Classical Chaos”.
Two tips: 1) turn on subtitles. They hide jokes there now and again. 2) The first time you watch a vid, always run it until you see names scrolling. They will sometimes have an extra scene.
I hope you find plenty to enjoy!

Seeing your cello brought back a lot of memories. I don’t play but my best friend in high school did. She had two music classes in school: Strings, which was mostly quartets, and Theater Orchestra so she had to lug that cello to high school every day. I’ve always loved the sound of the cello. It’s no coincidence that it rhymes with the word mellow!
Others have already recommended some of those that I would suggest. I would like to add his cover of Shenandoah. I hated that song when I was younger because our music teacher in fifth grade only had us sing that song for music - every single week. But he has redeemed it and it is truly lovely.
His cover of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen a few years back also had the ominous undertones as well. Maybe save that for next holiday season.
The way that Geoff has done this reminds me of a lot of the themes for both video games and movies. There’s something really all out cinematic and the way he’s done it. I could see this in a video game or action film with all the warriors in a winter setting getting ready to go fight. This reminds me of that feeling I get when he did his cover of I See Fire : armies getting ready to go into battle. I can definitely see them changing“ding dong” to “bang boom” and replacing “Christmas is here” with “the battle is here”. It would totally work!
I’m sorry to hear of your injury but you still play beautifully. Don’t put it away for another five years, please. Because I have no musical training I tend to concentrate on his voice, but more and more reactors who have instrumental backgrounds are starting to react to him and I’m paying a lot more attention to the complete arrangement now thanks to people like you.
I hope you continue your trip down the Geoff rabbit hole and take a turn into the VoicePlay rabbit hole as well. Liked and subbed in anticipation. Regarding the distorted sound: it’s a process, especially since you’ve not recorded with your cello previously. It’ll work out just fine.

Thanks for this reaction to Geoff's epic Christmas release. A little over two weeks after release this one exceeded one million TH-cam views on Christmas Eve. I have run out of superlatives! A five octave vocal range is a powerful thing. I enjoy the unexpected ways that Geoff arranges music nearly as much as his vocals. Geoff adds all of the instrumentals himself using his keyboard and plug-ins. Judging by his album art, the Geoffquakes did some damage!
The wonderful thing about Geoff's solo channel and VoicePlay's channel, is that there is nothing subpar. Our guys are perfectionists and extremely talented and 100% indie. I'm sorry to say this... your sound had problems with his recording, and a bit of static when you were playing as well. It made me very sad because I LOVE what you are doing: your playing instantly brought tears. Such beautiful tone. The static made it difficult to catch everything you said, and what you say adds such value. I've subscribed, and liked of course, and am hoping to hear more. You're wonderful. Now I'm off to see what else you've done on your channel. Geoff drops a new performance every month. He is also a founding member of VoicePlay, an amazing acapella group you will love. Perhaps a good intro to them would be Warriors: Layne, the other founding member, pulls out his violin for that one - a rare event. (We call him VioLayne). Again, they are an indie group doing everything themselves, and drop an extraordinary performance each month. Hard workers and incredibly talented. Geoff and Layne do most of the arrangements, and whoever takes the project of arranging, has artistic control (and the lions share of the work) for the rest of it. I so hope you will go deeper into Geoff's catalogue and explore VP as well - we fans are going to love what you add! Thank you for this one -

Love your channel name! Yes you are a GODDESS! And I am so glad you bring your knowledge of music to this reaction of Geoff Castellucci 😊. We 'Voiceplayers' (what we fans of Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci call ourselves) love reactors that can bring this type of information to us. Normal reactors and fans are amazing for sure, but when someone like yourself is willing to listen and breakdown what is happening, it brings us such joy! I'm so very sorry about your accident. I was a professional singer for several years but ended up with nodes on both sets of vocal cords (along with inherited deafness) that took away my ability to continue. It's not the same but I do understand the moment in which a person realizes there is no real way to continue. It was utter heartbreak for me. But I now live vicariously through Voiceplay and GC 😂. Please please continue to react to both GC and Voiceplay! I promise you won't regret it. They are so very intelligent in their arrangements as well as their choices of songs to cover. They always make the 'right' and proper' changes to the songs while still honoring the original piece. Also, please bring out your cello too! It was wonderful to hear you play. My middle daughter plays cello. She hasn't played in a few years now (she has 8 of my 10 grandchildren) so not as much time anymore (or sanity for that matter 🤣🤣). Sorry for writing a book with this comment! Happy holidays darling and Blessings to you!

Happy belated birthday! I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis and pure joy listening to Geoff. He is truly amazing and always brings something unique to his arrangements wether it's for himself or his a cappella group, VoicePlay. I would love to see some more reactions from you for both if that's something you're looking to do. I'm not a professional by any stretch, but I play the flute and loved hearing your thoughts from the instrumental side of things.

The audio from his video is WAY overdriven, very distorted. A nice reaction, but very hard to watch. Should be easily fixable.

The comment about 'space' is so rare. I've only heard one other reactor mention that break Geoff did at the beginning. I find that pause really helps with the impression of a HUGE bell. I consider this the Carol of the Bells from INSIDE the Cathedral Belfry. That 'space' at the very beginning reminds me of the start of ringing one of those giant bells. It takes a little bit to get the bell going and then it picks up speed. Here we get the main Geoff on his own until he sings "all caroling". That's neat to me not just because it emphasizes 'caroling' but also because it feels to me like the multiple bells joining in.
I do hope you consider adding some more music analysis/reactions, if for no other reason than I would not have found you otherwise without a Geoff song. And since no one has mentioned it, I think he would get a kick out of a 'foodie' posting his stuff. He is quite the foodie himself. VoicePlay even has a couple of Food Competition videos between Geoff and Layne (the beatboxer) as they are both so into cooking. I'm not suggesting them for reactions - just think you might find that fun (for yourself)
And since I'm into food & nutrition - I must now go check the rest of your channel. Subscribing!!

@@TheNaijaGoddess Should be an easy fix. One thing somewhere is set to max volume, and over-driving, and everything else is cut back to accommodate for that. Find what the one dial/setting is that's at 100%=ish, back it off to say 50%, and then raise up everything else to make up for it. That or it could be a bad connection somewhere. I'm sure you'll get it sorted out. I watched some of your other videos, nice with crowds!

Wow are you a multi-talented woman!!
I started learning cello as I was diagnosed with hyper mobility issues that make it Complicated to just hold a bow correctly, and a brace is needed for that for sure 🤦‍♀️
I’ve been putting off getting it tuned again, but once I do, I now feel motivated to get a few proper lessons with someone who u derstands that challenge.
It was really cool to hear you breakdown the song from a bass-clef perspective. I’m sorry you don’t play, but your personality is suited for this type of video. I’m subscribing mainly because you are a really interesting fellow creative ;I’m mainly a watercolor illustrator/artist.
I’m down for food talk too!! Nice job, shame about the audio, but stuff happens.

Geoff is a master arranger and what he has done with the Carol of the Bells is absolutely epic. His lowest note in this one is D1. Glad that you broke out your cello! Check out VoicePlay doing Classical Chaos with Geoff Castellucci (original bass from middle and high school (Layne too), 5 octaves plus 1/2 step, A0 growl, B0 subharmonic, F1 lowest chest, B4 some mix, Bb5 highest note), Layne Stein (original baritone but had an epiphany when their beatboxer Scott Porter wanted to get into acting. Layne had Geoff down for teaching him what he knew and Layne ran with it), Eli Jacobson joined in 2010 having been in rock bands, Tony was the baritone and about 2016 wanted to get into productions so he and Layne bought Pattycake Productions and most of Geoff's solos (never acapella, saves that for VoicePlay) and VoicePlay are done in Pattycake although not always. When Tony became the co-owner of Pattycake they brought on J None as baritone, 3 yrs ago he was recruited into the US Navy for his vocal talents. He's stationed in Wash DC but comes down to Orlando as often as he can to sing with VP. Earl Elkins was a high tenor who was an original member but about 4.5 yrs he left for personal reasons. VP was auditioning a person, Cesar de la Rosa who had both beautiful baritone and high tenor. His audition of We're Good (Dua Lipa) can be seen and know why they kept him. By the way, some folk have called Geoff a purring panther curled up inside a cello!

This has been so interesting and informative to hear from the perspective of a former cellist. I have some recommendations. For a good Voiceplay video that is both timely and showcases Geoff's arranging chops you should check out A Time To Fly, A Wicked Medley. It is incredible. For his solo work you can't go wrong with his dwarf trilogy: Far Over The Misty Mountain Cold, I See Fire, Song of Durin. In that order. Hope to see more and subscribed in anticipation.❤

Hair is coiffed; beverages are quaffed. I'm not sure whether there are any accents that pronounce these words the same, but they are definitely spelled differently. (I wouldn't have noticed the spelling, but your video appears to be open captioned.)
A *lot* of reactors have said that this sounds like it should be in a movie. Maybe Geoff has been listening to John Williams in his off time, or something.

  • @eirintowne
    @eirintowne 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

The sound distortion you're using, probably for copyright reasons that are unnecessary to worry about with Geoff and the Geoffettes and Voiceplay, is so loud that I can't hear what you're saying about the song. I really want to hear what you have to say, because actual musical analysis is too seldom found, and especially from someone playing my favourite external instrument!
I only put in a year on the cello because my daughter chose it after two years on the violin, and then moved on to the piano, so I remember longing to be a better player and much better able to read the key that the cello notes are written in (my singing voice is a first soprano, so I only understand the G key) almost as much as the lugging around an adults sized and a kid sized cello on public transport during rush hour once a week (the mere memory made me physically shudder, even though it has been around 10 years since those days).
Since you talked about having to change carreer due to an accident, I paid extra attention to your hands, down to counting fingers, and am pretty sure that your left hand was uninjured just from the expert tremolos. Your right wrist also showed beautiful movements, so I speculate that the right little finger, elbow or shoulder could have been the injured part? If it was, you are able yo compensate well enough to be able to play for yourself again with joy! The five years might have made playing less painful, too, which I really hope is the case!
I would love to watch more reactions/analysis from the cellist point of view, similar to what Amy Shafer does on the channel Virgin Rock from the viewpoint of a harpist (and virgin to popular music, due to having settled for classical only at a very young age)!
