Duel was and is still a great movie. Makes me scared watching it,after all these years. Superb acting.

I was thinking of movie "Duel" as my brother and I were driving on Soledad Canyon Road, North of L.A. a couple of weeks ago, where many parts of that road were used in the filming of "Duel". It is still today, a very scenic drive, with not much traffic.

Thanks for the trip down my childhood once again Fred. Seeing adam -12 reminded me when ever we played hot wheels no matter what number was on the police car it was always 1-adam-12.

@49jubilee - Also, don't forget American Graffiti came out in '73, with Ron Howard playing essentially a Richie Cunningham type character and Paul Le Mat as a quasi-Fonzie type, although that was set in 1962, not the 50's I believe.
On another note, ever wonder why there was never a Dad in the Partridge Family?

Now 20 years ago means AOL days. The internet has homogenized culture and trends to a certain extent. I think the last decade that had any identity was the 90's.... Just sayin"

DUEL! Maybe one of the best movie ever made for tv (by Steven Sielberg!) It was kinda of the blueprint for JAWS. There was great tv in those days! Very fond memories of BONANZA (a show I enjoyed watching with my father), CADE'S COUNTY, THE PERSUADERS which I actually first saw in french (I live in Montreal) as AMICALEMENT VOTRE as shown here!, Juliet Mills's NANNY (much cuter and with a much less annoying voice than the 90's version!) , GUNSMOKE., WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, DORIS DAY SHOW, MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, IRONSIDE, HAWAII FIVE-O (a household favorite for many years!), MARCUS WELBY MD and MEDICAL CENTER (more to my my mom's tastes but still watched as we had only the one tv in the house), BEWITCHED (another family favorite), ADAM-12 and MANNIX, COLUMBO (another favorite of my father), THE DEAN MARTIN SHOW, THE ODD COUPLE.. Very nice tv night watching memories! Thank you for sharing!

Gunsmoke was what my family watched , maybe that's why I don't remember seeing Nanny And The Professor. I knew it originally came on Friday nights. Jenny Augutter was a good actress. I seen her in Logan's Run and I have also seen her in a movie called Walkabout, which was made that year. It was about two children, a boy about seven, and a girl about fifteen. Their father went insane and tried to kill them in the desert in Australia. The two children meet an Aboriginal boy and he teaches them survival skills. They used to show it on television sometimes, but they had eo edit out scenes where Jenny swims naked and another scene where all three children are swimming naked. I have a DVR of it from last year. It's a very good movie.

"Duel" is in my permanent collection. It's one can pull out on a rainy night at least once a year. Damn good for a "TV movie" of the time. Also, Carol Burnett was one of the first nationally known celebrities to perform at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA - And here Pittsburgh Paints is sponsoring her show. Ironically, the parent company of Pittsburgh Paints (PPG) has the naming rights to the arena that REPLACED the Civic Arena!

Maybe that's why I don't remember seeing My Three Sons either, when I was eight, my bedtime was either eight thirty or nine PM. I DVR Night Gallery on MeTV. I wondered when it came on, way too late for me to be up and watching. Friday Nights at my house was always tuned to ABC, I loved The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family. I used to want to see The Partridge Family so badly that I would be sitting in a restaurant with the checkered table cloths and the candles , I guess it was an Italian one and lo and behold, The Partridge Family would come out and start singing. But no luck ) : I had no idea they really didn't sing together. Just Shirley and David and another bunch of singers.

Our name is Smith and I believe the sister on the show was named Cindy and that's my sister's name. I think that was 1971 and during that period some old, famous movie stars like Fonda (Smith Family) and Jimmy Stewart were brought into series TV but none of it worked. In fact, almost all the new shows for the 1971 season lasted just one year or less.

We watched Getting Together mainly because All In The Family was pre-empted by the local station and AITF was tape-delayed to 6:30 (CT) Mondays. We watched The Persuaders over Mission:Impossible too. 1971 was after Martin Landau and Barbara Bain quit.

I can tell you were looking at a W WA State TV Guide, as all the stations in the ads were Seattle-based.
NANNY AND THE PROFESSOR was left all alone in its time slot this year, w/ an open half-hour for the ABC affilates before MNF. NANNY was rarely carried at its scheduled time that season in ET or CT, as the affiliates figured it was easier to program the full hour from 8-9 PM ET before MNF and dump NANNY in early evening on the weekend, if they carried the show at all. It's pretty certain that this dumping happened w/ all ABC affiliates in time zones farther west, as MNF started at 7 PM MT and 6 PM PT, and affiliates didn't want to carry the show after MNF. NANNY died a lonely death that season, ending when MNF did at the end of December.
I vaguely remember seeing the HERE'S LUCY opening Monday nights at 9 PM ET, as I remember the sponsor mention of Lever Bros.
This was Doris Day's 1st season w/o her 2 boys, as she was now expected to emulate MTM's free single life.
10-11 PM ET was a terrible time for CBS to dump MY THREE SONS & ARNIE, and both shows were moved to earlier time slots on other nights after a few months before their cancellations at the end of the season.
ABC decided to keep MOD SQUAD at 7:30 PM ET Tuesday, instead giving back the half hour between NANNY & MNF on Monday nights. This move angered the other networks, their affiliates, and producers of syndicated programming, as this Tuesday night exception ruined the chance of running syndicated "strip" programming, which were same or similar programs mostly to be aired in that 7:30 PM ET slot. ABC, and as a result the other networks, freed 7:30 PM ET to the affiliates from the 1972-73 season onward.
Tuesday nights CBS & NBC programmed until 10:30 PM ET, not 10 PM ET, as their programs that started at 9:30 PM ET were a full hour long on both networks.
ABC moved BEWITCHED to 8 PM Saturday nights, up against ALL IN THE FAMILY, in January, after cancelling GETTING TOGETHER. I've read though that ABC still wanted to renew BEWITCHED after killing it on Saturday nights, but the actors & producers were tired of the show by then, which is apparent to almost anyone who has seen a Season 8 episode. ABC did carry THE PAUL LYNDE SHOW and TEMPERATURES RISING from Ashmont Productions (Bill Asher & Elizabeth Montgomery's production company) for 1972-73 and folded them together by moving Paul Lynde to TEMPERATURES RISING for 1973-74.
THE SMITH FAMILY producer Don Fedderson got Henry Fonda for his show by giving him the same deal that Fred MacMurray had for MY THREE SONS and Brian Keith had for FAMILY AFFAIR, filming the shows around their leads so the leads would only have to work about 13 weeks/year.
Pete Duel killed himself on the last day of 1971, causing ALIAS SMITH AND JONES to replace him w/ announcer Roger Davis for the remaining episodes of the season, after which the show was cancelled.

It's odd that I remember MISSING the movie Duel, but lots of guys at school talking about it the next day, saying how good it was, I didn't get to see it till several years later. While I liked a few TV shows back then, most that were on I found mind numbingly boring, such as Ironside,Cannon,or any of the doctor or lawyer shows I suppose that was good as I spent most of my time outside doing stuff. Thanks for putting this together and posting.

Sure. I was at a party the night Duel was on. I was 17. My friend Jerry and I walked into a room with a TV on and caught the last 5 minutes. Like you said, back then you had to wait a long time, perhaps years, to see it again.

Yes that would have been a Saturday night, so a party was in order at 17, I turned 17 my senior year of High School and threw a keg party at the lake, only told a few people and about a 100 showed up,,very different times then, while that party spot was well known to the local cops, they never bothered us, as long as we stayed out of town.lol.

Thanks so much, Fred! I've been a little out of the loop recently but eager to get caught up. I had a crush on Julia Mills - that's the only thing I remember about Nanny and the Professor. I think the Charger game would have been a big deal that night in my neighborhood - I'm sure of it, though I don' t know if it sold out or not. I think that game was somewhere else on TH-cam, but haven't finished the game yet. Great memories . . . one question: I didn't remember the Jimmy Stewart Show. Was that a short lived thing? Thanks again!
