LOVED this format! I liked seeing all the clips as you discussed the films. Gave me a taste of the cinematography and the narrative themes all at once!
Ah, I love But I’m a Cheerleader! ❤❤❤ Your theater experience with it sounded magical!
Dogtooth and Past Lives are ones I want to watch sooner than later. Happy to hear your reviews!

New way of documentary… maybe is personal but I prefer to watch you when you talk even if maybe is more “boring”

That soundtrack for City lights!! I watched it when I was in middle school and I remember that score just made me an emotional wreck-such an awesome example of the importance of scoring in a movie

I remember being so mad at a Funny Games when I first watched it in high school cuz the 4th wall break felt so unfair, I was mad mad and made me feel so hopeless and then I was like oh that's the point

A woman under the influence is my favorite movie of all time. Don’t know if you’ve seen it. Also a perfect blue is my favorite animated film.

the only Cassavetes i've seen is Killing of a Chinese Bookie and i didn't enjoy it much, but that, Opening Night, Love Streams, and Faces have been on my watchlist for a while!

@@alsopato killing of a Chinese bookie is just fine to me. I don’t think it’s a good representation of how character driven and emotionally detailed his films usually are. I think his best work involves his wife gena. A woman under the influence was the first movie that ever viscerally affected me. Like thought about it for weeks. Incredibly depressing though so maybe do it on a not so busy day. Perfect blue I also thought about it for weeks; I never thought I could be so enraptured and disturbed by an animated film before that.

I once saw a documentary about Buster Keaton and it really got into what a perfectionist he was and how he made all of the stunts and effects possible. It was really interesting, also I hadn't know before how complicated his career was or anything about his own personal struggles.

so many good movies I've loved in this one: In the Mood for Love (which is tbh a little boring, but it's nonetheless gorgeous), Do the Right Thing, But I'm a Cheerleader (def glad I found this one in high school), Cabaret, Dogtooth, Funny Games (ok, maybe not "love" bc it's harrowing, but still)... ha ha I loved Bringing Up Baby when I was a child. I need to watch Sherlock Jr. and Past Lives. you make me want to watch more movies, which is very good. inspire me, pls :)

only seen the second version of Funny Games that Haneke did but i loved it so i should really watch the original... ok now i need to see There Will Be Blood again... i like Wes Anderson on balance but "the most Wes Anderson film yet" sounds like it could be pastichey in a way i wouldn't like; i'm avoiding the Asteroid for now...

  • @ssongpyeon

asteroid city was my first wes anderson (i'll never forgive my friend for letting me watch this before seeing his other films LMAO /j) after watching and thinking abt it for a bit, i came to the similar understandings u did regarding this film being a self-reflexive & self-reflective work, but i def felt like an "outsider" watching this movie haha i hope to watch his other movies soon and rewatch asteroid city so i can get a better appreciation for it !!

lol! seems alienating to start w something to self aware/inside-jokey, his earlier movies r less meta and more self cotained n charming but you already ripped the band-aid off so you can watch whatever atp

My first John Waters experience was Female Trouble, I liked it better than Pink Flamingos. I have an appreciation for the queerness of his work but his films really do push you in so many ways you don't expect. I guess that's why John Waters is so legendary.

I agree with everything you said about Cabaret! I've seen so many bits and pieces of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin but I need to sit down and watch them properly. Tom Cruise has nothing on them!

  • @vattenflaska

ooh Cabaret is probably my favorite musical but I never really vibed with the movie. The stage version doesn't have the love triangle and instead has a side plot about Cliff's landlord getting engaged to a Jewish man. idk if they thought the movie goers wouldn't care about a struggling middle aged couple or what but it was a bad choice imo, they are probably my favorite part if the show

I really enjoyed this review Pato it reminded me of many great movies. I also love a lot of these choices particularly Do The Right Thing (which I watched when it first came out) and The Trial, both by two brilliant directors. I also like Cabaret and But I’m A Cheerleader as they are both an entertaining watch too. I saw dog tooth on late night TV here in the UK and found it interesting, but far too slow. Regards The Piano Teacher, I agree with you it was definitely not as good as the book, it dipped too much for me. However, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton I adore, as their movies and shorts were so masterfully constructed and shot, especially considering when they were made; and both actors have such pathos and like ability. I have liked both of them since I was a kid. As for Past Lives, I haven’t gotten around to it yet, but your review made me really want to watch it. Lastly, I am a massive Daniel Day Lewis fan and have watched every movie he’s been in. I think he is a masterful actor who gives such a considered performance. I really thought his performance in There Will Be Blood was captivating, but if I am honest I prefer his more subtle performance and delivery in Phantom Thread. Have you ever watched My Beautiful Laundrette? If not check it out. It is very British, and of its time, but I love it.
