This is the kind of thing I LOVE about machining. You don't need a multi thousands of dollars investment or specialized tooling. Just make your own, make it work for the few things you do and keep it simple. Great idea!
thank you, i am 60 also. have a old Lucas mill and a gisholt lathe 28 in swing. axle and wheel dept changes I am trying now love your tooling old school.
Great video, just found your channel. My father was a tool & Die maker from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. I inherited his lathe and purchased a mill about ten years ago. I was alway under the impression that axles were all hardened after splines were cut, is that not the case?
When you look at the difference between an involute curve and a straight line its only .001” on typical axle splines. That works for 90 and 60 degree pressure angles.
Genius! Could we get a update on super jeep? I just bought a pto winch today after watching how awesome yours works. Do you have yours overdriven at all, mine is a Ramsey and it’s very slow according to the original owner. Just wondered what setup you were running
to keep up with super jeep, just like the super jeep facebook page. Does your pto come off the transmission or transfercase?. I get speed out ouf mine by reving engine to 4000 rpm, but never under a full load. I shoot for 2000 rpm and so far the engine will stall before something breaks. I believe my PTO output is 94% of engine rpm, and if I put the over drive in, which is in front of the transmission, then I get another 27% faster.
If the splines on a shaft are very worn and a new shaft is impossible to obtain is it then possible to weld up the worn splines, machine down to original diameter and just re cut new splines?
I don't often comment on videos but what you've come up with here is brilliant. Thumbs up and a subscribe.

This is so bad ass. I’ve been watching ever since super Jeep was on TV. Wish you uploaded more!
Dr Jantz, paging Dr Jantz 👨🏻⚕️ we have a spline surgery scheduled for you
thats initative that only a trump man would have! thanks for sharing

That is how it is done in the OEM world but aftermarket you are often shortening an existing axle or using a pre hardened blank.
Awesome thanks for sharing
God Bless America !

I guess it is involute spline in that gear. You cut 90 deg. How do you think about that.

God bless you I enjoy ur videos I hope u keep more video coming
Looks like you're climb milling here...is this preferable to conventional?
Inwould have actually preferred conventional, but accidentally built it backwards lol. So definitely need some drag on the table lock down.
Awesome 🤩. Thanks
Brilliant. Thank you for sharing!
Brilliant
I had a similar idea but your execution is great. I'm going to make a setup like yours in the near future.
Really appreciate the video! A friend and I will be using this method for shortening a jet ski driveshaft here very soon! Nicely done!

Good job! It makes me want to fire up the mill.
Wish u lived nr me I’m need a pair of longer axles
Great video! Do you have any more info or pictures of your cutter?
Real good meat and potatoes there budd👍
Excellent job , love it
Do you respline for a price?
fantastic video

I have done that on old farm machinery many times. but its never as good as new.
@@superjeep47 I had a problem with worn splines on my boat transmission output shaft. I have now secured an order for a new shaft from Seattle, USA
