Thank you so much man! I love your channel by the way! I want to do a smokeless fire pit like yours. I saw your video and knew I needed to do a collaboration with you some day haha
Ohhhh Epoxy and concrete... another great video. Ohhhh that darn fly in the ointment. What a moment that would have been... I've thought about doing something like this but with my stairs going into the basement... it's a whole cool Reno idea I have with real smooth river stone walls down the stairs. Huge project... but it too will be satisfying! LOL.
I was actually laughing out loud. I had a little gecko get stuck in one of my epoxy pours. I actually managed to get him out as it was towards the end of the cure time so his tiny feet were not too deep but OMG I feel your pain with the fly. Why is it that we have to learn so many lessons (the hard way) on each and every project. Thank you so much for sharing. It truly made me happy to know that I am not alone. Your table came out great!!
i love how you show the mistakes.. I think it came out awesome, and i agree with a lot of the people and that the imperfect edges make for a more appealing look. keep the videos coming. 👍
Excellent work here Mike .. I’m a custom stone mason and I tell you not many people enjoy working with concrete the way you ans I do .. love seeing you share your skills and time with us ! .. and for making true honest videos .. 🤝
I love that you show your entire process - mistakes or flaws - makes it real and we learn so much. I also agree with Jason Howard, rivers aren't perfect; flaws are necessary.
So two things... I, too, am a perfectionist about my work, and I get being hypercritical about things that don't come out as you'd planned. But two things in this video that you called mistakes I think were (channeling Bob Ross) happy accidents that make the piece more interesting. First is the rough edges on the topography. Nowhere in nature do you see perfectly crisp edges, so IMO having those edges the way that they are was a great miss! And second, when you're talking about the pigment from the color not blending 100% - here again, I think that it adds a layer of detail that works even better than if it'd been perfectly blended. Great channel!
It’s so awesome that you include your trial and error stuff. Everyone else makes things like this look effortless (through the magic of editing) which leaves people who try it wondering A: what went wrong and B: should they just give up and never try again Thanks so much for all you do! I hope you’re doing well with the channel and aren’t sorry to ave quit your day job 💕
It's great that you point out your errors then make us laugh along with your frustrations.....helps us remember not to make the same mistakes. We should be creative and make a completely different set of mistakes that we find work-arounds for. Table looks awesome!
He was fly fishing. 😂 The river came out amazing! I love the depth it gave. Michael, you never cease to surprise us all, taking little mistakes and turning them into beautiful art. Now, I have to try this for the kitchen counter at the cabin. :) I'm so glad your jumping into more videos, watching you create gets me excited about giving it a try.
I really appreciate your videos! Because of you I remodeled my entire kitchen (that's what I do for a living) but I poured my first concrete counter tops and they turned out amazing! Wish I could share a picture to show you. Keep the videos coming. 👍🏻
Beautiful. Had the same thing happen with a large oil painting. A fly landed on the most obvious bright yellow area. Parts of it are still there to this day!! I feel your pain.
Halcyon = "hal-see-uhn" I'm being pedantic, but to end on a positive note: you're an artist with your builds, and each video is very educational. Keep up the great work sir!
Thanks for keeping it real. Very cool project. As an artist, learned long ago to work with the mistakes, adjust, redesign. Only redo if absolutely necessary. Like if you just can't live with it. Otherwise, enjoy the journey, the modifications, and the unforseen result--which is sometimes even better than the original idea. Thanks for another great, informative, fun video!! I will definitely be covering my upcoming epoxy countertops...geez!!! We have fruitflies right now... Wouldn't that be unfortunate!!! 🤔
New sub right here! I want to learn to do this so bad. I love love love this table. The clear part at the bottom is a happy accident as light coming through it will add to it. I have a small C table that will be my first project. I think. Gonna put on my big girl tool belt and be brave...I think. Love your vids! Very thorough explanation.
I LOL so hard when saw the fly. I expected a crazed finish, sticky epoxy, anything but that. Well played. As another fix option, that might have been a good spot for an inlay of some sort.
Looks awesome! Especially cool to give your tips of what to do differently! I so often find myself making two or three versions of a project until I'm sure I'm happy with it. Except my fire table, that was a one shot! Lol
I'm addicted to your videos. In this one you said you would have used a mechanical mixer for the epoxy. Would the mixer have added too many bubbles or would the torch take care of that?
Always seems to happen with some bug wanting to take a swim in your work. lol. I had an auto body and paint shop years ago. Got the last coat of paint on a Corvette. Was looking awesome. Till a moth/butterfly landed on it. Another days work. Nice table you made and video too. Not likely I'll do any concrete work. Too heavy for me . Don't go thinking because I'm old (I am, but don't be thinking that).
what do you think about doing concrete pour with white sand instead of wood river insert? I am looking for beachy theme with small sand dollars and star fish embedded in the river. Does that sound feasible. This is going as the hearth of my outdoor fireplace with two water falls into hearth stone, we will see.
Mike total boat Apoxsie is a good product I have use that before I did a concrete table in my backyard open my last name on both sides and filled it with blue fire pit stone And I use the total boat and I liked it
Air helps with de moulding, and water if all else fails specially if you use a mold release like PVA. For the fly issues a grinding bit in a Dremel light sand with 320wet/dry around ground out fly fill with epoxy wet sand and polish
Great video, table looks amazing. I have been thinking of doing a epoxy inlay also and this answers many of my questions. I just posted a video pouring a countertop and sink for my outdoor kitchen, mistakes were made, but it turned out pretty good. I polished it with diamond pads based off your previous video, so shinny :)
I'm going to copy you for a dry bar this winter. Question: can you layer in different colors with epoxy?. I like this a lot. Wondering if you could add rocks to the river. I.E. Upper lights.
I just unscrew the sides and I cars off. Or I just hot glue the mold and pull it off. I hot glue braces every six inches and hit them off with a hammer. You can only do that if you don’t have to reuse the mold
A little bit of draft on the molds will make it come out way easier. We used 3° of draft with plastic injected parts. Just a thought. The molds will also be reusable.
Have you tried to use pink foam board to make those river inserts etc. They pull out easily and what doesn't a little acitone will melt it away. Just started watching your channel sorry if you addressed this before.
Mike, what kind of concrete did you use to get it so white? Did you add an additive to make it stronger? How did you do the molds for that topography epoxy river coffee table?
Hi Michael, we are going to a 4.5’x8’ pour in place a concrete countertop on our island. I REALLY would like to use a map of the creek that defines our town. Suggestions?
Hi, great video. Could you tell us what proportions cement/water mix by volume you use if you do not use a full bag ? I worked it out to be 4 to one ratio by volume of cement to water mix. Sounds right ??? Thanks
I enjoy all your videos and I'm learning alit but I have a question, for a kitchen counter top what would you use to seal the top because I would like to cut veggies and roll dough
Get a couple of those fly traps that have a bag of yeast, or whatever it is, in them. You have to fill them part way with water to activate the yeast. They are amazing. I caught 1000's of flies with only two of them last summer. You probably will not want to keep them in your shop, maybe on the fence near your shop or a rear outside corner of your shop.
I'm assuming you couldn't just drill out the fly and fill it in with epoxy. I've never worked with epoxy but I sure would love to make a table like that. It's beautiful. I wonder if it's heat resistant. Like could you use it for a dining room table.
I used Cemental to do a pour in place 4’ x 6’ kitchen island top, came out pretty good in spite of my troweling skills, but it curled up when drying. Top was 1” thick poured on top of 1/2” backer board so edges were 1.5” thick. Was very conscientious with keeping it wet for an hour plus after pouring. Any thoughts on the curling? Have done a couple projects with mortar mix and they stayed flat.
Great video and cool project. I totally enjoy your content and the advice you give along the way. My wife and I have a farm that raises a wide variety of waterfowl, so naturally I hope you might produce a cement pond project in the future.
If the table top is firmly attached to the base, you can Cut out the small part that is not stained. It won’t be going anywhere soon. Nice job. Looks great appart from the forgotten stain spot. 😎 Cut it away, so it’s completely see through.
“Embrace the suck” …. Love your catch phases! 🌺🌸🌺
Be thankful the role the fly played into creating more helpful content. now we know better!
I like you keeping the "happy accidents" in there!! Some want you to think that everything they do is always perfect.
Improvise, Adapt, Overcome.. Michael.. You did just that...! Good Work..!
It came out beautiful. I want to try an epoxy concrete table soon. The flaws you pointed out just make it look more natural to me. Great job!
Thank you so much man! I love your channel by the way! I want to do a smokeless fire pit like yours. I saw your video and knew I needed to do a collaboration with you some day haha
How did you get verified by the way. Can’t get that done to save my life…
@@MichaelBuilds Thanks! That would be cool.
@@MichaelBuilds I didn’t wait for them to do it on their own. I actually applied and they did it within a couple days.
@@HAXMAN I’m gonna try that!

The fly issue! Drill it out and insert a rock! 👍👍👍🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸

Follow your dream!! Thank you for showing the correction of your mistakes as well as showing us how to make something. :)
Nothing is ever perfect.
Just came across your channel..LOVE IT!! I love the mistakes, your attitude, humor..ALL OF IT!
Awesome Job Michael! Oh how we all learn.....
I love it the way it is and that fly just wanted to help you take it 1 step farther....lol

Very Wicked Cool! I like the imperfections it makes it more real! I would love to try this for a counter or a table! Awesome! And thanks for the tips!
despite all the setbacks this turned out really great!
Hey Michael!!!! I wish you were closer …. I love all your creative ideas …
This came out amazing!! Love the design and build! 🙌😍 That pesky fly though.. 🤣🤣

Nicely done. Just wondering about how the epoxy would bond to the concrete if you had applied a sealer? Have you tried this?
Wow! That looks fantastic!
For demolding the steps from the cement, would it help to add 1-2 degrees of draft angle also?
I just unscrew the sides and I cars off. Or I just hot glue the mold and pull it off. I hot glue braces every six inches and hit them off with a hammer. You can only do that if you don’t have to reuse the mold
Another thing you can use is Teflon spray for mold release. It’s cheap and works great for me
A little bit of draft on the molds will make it come out way easier. We used 3° of draft with plastic injected parts. Just a thought. The molds will also be reusable.
Have you tried to use pink foam board to make those river inserts etc. They pull out easily and what doesn't a little acitone will melt it away. Just started watching your channel sorry if you addressed this before.
I wonder if beeswax would work as a mold release and a corner seal
Mike, what kind of concrete did you use to get it so white? Did you add an additive to make it stronger? How did you do the molds for that topography epoxy river coffee table?
Have you done a concrete dining room table. If so let me know how it went. I’m planning on doing one soon

You did everhing , expcept showing the final finished table in detail.
