3 hour long 35 million dollar a24 black comedy about Joaquin Phoenix having psychosis induced surreal Truman show mommy issues while being extremely afraid until his last 15 seconds of screen time
The reviews on this film that I've seen range from objectively one of the worst movies some people think they've ever seen .... to a masterpiece for others, so I don't know what to expect. The only concensus I see is that most people are left feeling uncomfortable and confused and it's weird whether they like it or not. I'm so excited to see it! My favorite director/movie writer and lead actor of the last 10 years and on my birthday 😁
People saying it’s the worst movie ever made makes me even more excited. His previous films were not received by “critics” in high regard, but I love them for his personal flare.
hes not being self deprecating here, hes saying he doesnt want to corrupt peoples’ experience by telling them what he intended it to be. he’s only self deprecating about his language in the interview, not his work.
"I made something for audiences I hope for it like exciting and fun, and makes people feel things." Idk why I feel like understand what he means after hearing this line. And how he mentioned "make people feel things", that exactly what I got during Beau Is Afraid movie. Love Aster and his works even more!!
Yep. Both Ari and Robert Eggers. They’ve both released 3 films each so far and all of them are among the best films of the last decade. Finally, Paul Thomas Anderson has some competition.
This is still how I try to explain this masterpiece to others Absolutely unexplainable yet very relatable for all men who have a complicated relationship with their mothers Thank you Mr Aster
Oh I definitely felt things watching the film. Fun wasn’t one of them though 😂😂 Beau is afraid and so am I! I did love it though. Even though I barely understand anything
@@TheRuudiimens I’m pretty sure the girl just missed doing dumb stuff with her brother but he died so she wanted beau to do that stuff as a replacement.
I understand this. You make something that means something to you, yet you intend it to be for others. When you watch it/make it, you experience it from the perspective of your experiences. It is extremely personal and exposing, and it can make you feel weird, out of place, odd, and/or sad that your experiences combined with your creativity create something that may never fully be truly understood by another person. I may be wrong with this interpretation, but this is how I understand his statement from my perspective.
He could learn a thing or two from David Lynch. Just say no lol I always love seeing people try to get a genuine response from Lynch whenever he’s asked about his films. He’s not afraid to just say “ the film speaks for itself “ and that much is certainly, obviously true of Beau is Afraid.
Definitely, He is one of most talented new Cinema Directors. I saw his whole Opus.. And Beau is afraid is a Masterpiece. Don't miss it if you like Cinema 🎉
The movie is filled with symbolism, just like poetry. The beauty of poetry is the subjective and exploratory process of interpretation - to cause people to reflect and associate its content with their own experience. This process is disrupted by explanations, which is probably the reason why poetry is such an in-explicit art form to begin with. I think this is more or less what he’s trying to say.
Ari did amazing work on that movie in many ways I haven't seen anything like it, I didn't hear about it until someone did a review on it. I finally sat down and watched it and blew my mind
Why did he delete the old short film that inspired the losing the keys scene which kicked off the mommy issues, also munchausen was an extreme mommy issue movie and also had German connections, beau wasserman, munchausen,
I must admit, "Beau is Afraid" is by far the most satisfying movie I watched in 2023. Additionally, Martin Scorsese praised both the movie and Aster's direction, which was the cherry on top for me.
Exciting and fun, this freakin guy. Love this movie and have such a personal connection with it . His ability to connect and evoke emotion are uncanny. Anyways I hate the way this movie made me feel. But that’s the point of art. ❤️
I wasn't confused, just amazed at what the character is faced with including the inner demons. The situations/ demons manifesting and pushing him along.
An artist explaining how you should feel while watching his work is like a magician explaining you how the trick works even before performing the trick.

The next ten yrs lol. Yet he's right. This will take time. And will be talked about for yrs to come. I did like it overall. But that could be due to me suffering from severe anxiety and depression in my life. So I think very few will like this film. And most will hate this film. So only art house style film fans will come away woth something they like about this film. I definitely am going to watch it again because woth everything that happened and it's 3 hr runtime I'm sure will all missed stuff from just one viewing.
Yeah it’s not exciting or fun at all. It’s a wild work of art and has a definite mind if it’s own, with many meanings behind it. I felt sick at times yet gripped. The movie ended and the theater was silent, then a guy said oh man what a mindfuck, and another was leaving and said “well I’ll be thinking about this for a day or six”.. I left feeling a lot of things but know that it is a great one of a kind film, a true work of art. But it was every single thing but fun. 😂
No plot, just emotions. A peak example of the evolution of art over the last century. The days of victor hugo are long gone. Hope you like feelings, kids, because that’s all you get.
The world is full of stories already. Also full of living embodiments of characters fulfilling the great plot of our "heavenly masters". The gnostics were mistaken. There is no demiurge. There are whole lots of them 😊😢 And if you feel/live like you've already been through hundreds of lives(plots), you'll start to have a strong urge to UNDERSTAND: not just via the help of different kinds of intelligences, but deeply personally understand the world around you. Especially the human condition, of course. After some decades of serious efforts you'll likely realise that just like over 99% of humans you don't have the capacities to. And that's when these kinds of movies can be deeply relieving...

Dude has that Kubrick mindset. Let the art do the talking, that’s integrity.
The Lynch mindset.
