    A good review. I still use the 85/1.4 D and the 80-200mm f/2.8 d lenses. I have no issue and the results are super. I had thought about going mirrorless but I have too many super lenses to use with my d810 and d4s. Guess I will remain old school. Rock and Roll!!

    I recently bought this lens used (mint). I shot a senior photo session with it and my D850 this past weekend, and I am very pleased with the results. Can't wait to use it with the Z6 II. Thank your for showing the image samples. You're one of the very few reviewers/channels doing reviews like this. I preferred the 85mm in head to head comparisons. I love it! Rock n Roll!

      Thank you Freeman. Can't wait for the Corona to be over , life to get back to normal so I can have actual models and photoshoots in my videos with sample images. Its kind of tough to collaborate giving this current situation. However I got some great things lined up for the future. :) D850 and 85mm wow thats a titanic combo right there. you will love it on the Z6ii. The handling and weight distribution is perfect. The only downside to this is, its a little annoying shooting vertical portraits without a grip. But finally they made one for the Z6ii. Thank you for your comment F B Rock On.

    Excellent review of this lens I own myself on a D750 and I found it particularly interesting that you brought up the idea of mounting it on a Nikon mirror less system (Z-Series). The 1:1 comparison with the 70-200 was equally useful. In my opinion the bokeh of the 85mm looked better especially with the handbag/candle shot. As you say one has to utilise this lens the right way which means with low f values but of course one has to be aware of the very limited depth of field as eyes could easily fall out of the range when shooting close up portraits with some angle. I fully agree with the "feel" that this piece of precious glass provides, I will always love it! Really enjoyed your in depth review that is out of the ordinary - you clearly deserve more viewers!

    Great honest review. I fall into the category of not wanting to spend $1400 on an 85mm. I picked up the 85mm 1.8G for $300 used. The copy I got is in great shape and I am amaze at the color reproduction and the bokeh. The 1.8 is sharp enough for my work. Not saying it is not sharp. It is one of my sharpest lenses. As always I look forward to your reviews.

      Alot of people pixel peep to no end. Id put 500 dollars on your lens being more than sharp enough. Unless you are a total nerd with a microscope its perfect and more than enough for print enlargements which to me is the most critical analysis. If it looks good printed its a good lens.

    Incredible shots from you as usual, really showing what this lens is capable of. I am reading a lot (and seeing photos) about colorfringing (purple and green areas on shiny things in frame) for this lens and also chromatic abberations, which is really annoying part for me in Nikon old lenses. You said it in one word, magic 🪄. This was the best 85 mm focal length by far at the time. I couldn’t justify owning it. Then Nikon dropped the 1.8 G version and I picked it up right away new. No regrets with that lens and I am happy with how light it is. How it renders colors, background separation giving the image a three dimensional feel to the image. Bokeh magic 🪄.

    great lens indeed man! Yeah, I know about the Otus 85, I have one and: 1) the lens is too heavy for long shoots and 2) it's incredibly sharp and has an amazing contrast (to the point that you want to touch the image with your fingers as they pop out so much) but it requires a lot of editing in photoshop to 'destroy' most of its sharpness or the woman will complain... so this nikkor 84 G seems to be the perfect balance.

    You mention the Sigma equivalent lens as a possible alternative, but one of the things I liked most about your review was your reference to the predecessor Nikkor 85mm 1.4 AF-D lens (which I also own and still use). Additionally, the equivalent SIGMA lens is larger overall, longer and heavier and thus, a non-starter for me. My main reason for looking at this lens (esp. new) vs. the Nikkor 105 mm f1.4 AFS is your recommendation here. I've been a huge fan of the 105 mm Nikkor lens but don't do enough portrait work to justify the expense. Your comment on its size was another reason that confirms that not buying it would, in my case be the right decision. I'd like to add that I think this is actually one of your most "objective reviews" in that while you offer possible alternatives to the subject of the review, your counterpoints as to why you recommend this lens vs. the alternatives are very well reasoned and explained. Thank you for another well thought out, well explained explanation for why you do what you do when it comes to what's in your camera bag.

    • @Vahagraphy
      @Vahagraphy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Paul. Appreciate it and glad you took a thing or 2 from this video. Well. Out of all my lenses, I have the most time spend with the 85's G and D. this is my favorite focal length for portraits. the more you use something it becomes second nature and you pretty much know everything about it. and also you get familiar with the other alternatives out there. This is probably why I am so objective here. I used and owned a 105 1.4 4 years ago. Haven't had much time with it, I will be getting one soon. a friend is selling his at a great price so I might be owning one again hehe. We shall see. I will be putting those to head to head at some point, but yes the 85 has been great. D or G. both awesome. and now the Z is part of my camera bag aswell and that lens is killer.

      Your welcome Dom. Both lenses have different looks. For portraits and wedding work I prefer the 85 1.4. Its smaller, lighter and has a more smoother bokeh. The 105 is an amazing beast of a lens. It compresses the background amazing and is one sharp lens. Both are great. In my personal opinion the bokeh on the 105 has these rounded busy type blur. its a bit long if your doing bridal portraits however if your doing portraits or headshots outside on location or studio work the 105 is perfect. plus the 105 used is allot more money.

I haven't really used it for long to tell you a concrete answer. The good news is, the little time I did use it on my Z6, it worked well. It worked as advertised. With so many DSLR shooters finally moving to Z bodies due to the update tipping the scales for them a lot of faster Nikkor F lenses are coming on the used market. Those staying with the D850 or other D8x0 body, it will be a good opportunity to get a timeless lens. I have that same lens, the first F mount G 1,4 I got but over the years added other F mounts, some by trading, others by buying and one as a gift: 85's in my collection Nikkor 1.8, 1.4, Sigma 1.4 ART and in Z mount the 1.8 S. of those the S lens is the sharpest corner to corner and does not get worse opening up. Wide open it is clearly sharper than the others. At 2.8 or F4 the 1,4G are closer but the S lens handles stay light or strong light in the frame better than any of the F mount lenses. I think it is a tossup between the Sigma and Nikkor but the ART lense is better in the very center which becomes weaker towards the edges. Razor-sharp in not usually desired with portraits but fall off in appearance off the center can be noticeable with F lenses. So the 1.8 S stays on the Z6 because it is a better general-purpose lense due to its outstanding performance wide open, where it stays. If you are a mixed mount shooter, DSLR and Z, the 1.4G is probably a better choice simply because it is not possible to adapt to a DSLR. Where you notice the difference more are in the corners and when there is strong backlight, that the new modern coatings and lens formulas handle better. I had a 85 1.4D and really liked it but it is not as forgiving in backlit or strong side light, I feels great in the hand but optically it is not the Jack of all trades the G version is, or the S version. I used to have a beat up 135 2.0 DC and that made it as an excellent portrait lens for faces that could use the compression, very flattering images came with that lens but it is not a good all-rounder.
    Overall, S lenses are surprising everyone how optically refined they are. The S line is getting a 85 1.2 and has a 50 1.2 which is getting rave reviews from early samples. All the S glass is excellent, the 24-70 2.8 zoom is likely the best mid zoom on the market. At 50mm, it is optically better than the 50 1.4G prime!. The 70-200 2.8 S met and exceeded the very high expectations for it.

    • @Vahagraphy
      @Vahagraphy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Huy. Thank you for your question. The 85G will cost you a little more then the 85Z. As far as which lens to choose. Are you going to be doing photography or more video? For video work I would go with the 85Z. If your going to be doing both , and you need 1.4. More light and you don't mind using z6ii with the ftz adapter. Personaly I love the 85G lens. For portraits, I would choose the 85G over the Z anyday everyday. The 85G 1.4 is one of my fav portrait lenses. I love the colors, bokeh, everything about that lens is amazing. If it were me I would buy the G. Used it will cost you almost the same money. Maybe a bit more for the G. 1.4 on this lens is a huge difference vs the 1.8 on the Z lens. If you want something a little more lighter, and use without an adapter, then yes. the Z , the Z is amazing and sharp. Video. well silent focus too. So really you wont be unhappy with either or. 85G is a legend and beast.

    I have a Nikon 85mm f1.4D lens, does it make sense to change to a G lens? Nikon D610, D800, Z5 cameras. How much better is it on open 1.4? and is there a difference in sharpness?

    • @Vahagraphy
      @Vahagraphy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you for the very good question. 2 parts here. as far as performance, yrs the G is much better. both focus speed and sharpness. The D is an amazing sharp lens, I;ve owned that lens, however it lacks with coatings, get allot of CA and purple frindging compared to the G. The focus spedd and loud focus motor, Is the G allot sharper than the D, No, not a big difference because the D is already sharp. the D produces colder colors, the G is a tad bit warmer. Now the second part of my answer, givin the the G has gone down in used price, its very much worth getting. The performance alone, AF-S, N coating, and given you have. Z5, with an FTZ you can do AF with the G lens, You cannot with the D lens, If it were me I would sell the D and use that money towards a used G lens, probably going to cost you an addition 500US dollars but well worth it, I would rent it first and test it to see if you see big differences, if not then I would keep the D and rock those portraits,

      @@Vahagraphy Thanks again for the detailed answer, I really appreciate your attitude towards subscribers. I will definitely buy the new version, since the autofocus of the D lenses does not work on the z5. I will leave old lenses for D610, D800. there is no point in selling these cameras either, since they have dropped very much in price.

Case in point, I had a whole line of Canon FD L lenses a while ago, and a few ROKKOR minolta lenses, 58 1.2. sold them and I very much regret selling them. Now I look at they have trippled the price and not to many of those old MF lenses around,. Im talking about the Canon FD L 85mm 1.2 and 50mm FD 1.2 L red stripe lenses.
