I have followed you for a couple years now and I've always appreciated your deep influences of photography, which convinced me to buy gear and get into photography myself. But unfortunately time got away from me when I got diagnosed with cancer and now all I do is spend every minute with my daughter, my little twin because life is short and never promised 💔
Born and raised in Chicago in Logan Square, I take time with my daughter and show her all the beauty of Chicago and try my best to build as much memories of us together ❤️

Thank you Manny for that insightful, and thought through preview of this lens. I think you made some excellent observations and comparisons and did justice to both Nikon and Canon on this one.
I am a Nikon guy and have been for over 30 years, and am admittedly biased (a little - I try to stay objective). I think this Nikon lens will be spectacular and I already pre-ordered my copy from NPS this morning.
In general, I like that Nikon takes care to go the extra mile with their optics: controlled focus breathing (in the lens - not the body like Sony), more aperture blades (this is subtle, but I think it the right direction for a lens of this type and price), kept the weight down and maintained a great balance in the hands, and kept the lens more silent - the Z lenses are doing the best job of providing high end pro lenses for both stills and video of the three big manufacturers in my opinion - and I have used the Canon system as well. This new Nikon 85mm 1.2 s lens is a shining example of this fact.
That said, there are no flies on the Canon version of this lens, and I have no doubt that as a portrait and wedding shooting either would crush the job.
Thanks again for your down to earth, common sense approach.

I think the thing with the Canon RF f/1.2L glass (50mm and 85mm) is that they have some really hefty glass inside and some of that is moving while focusing. Canon has a better focusing system already (Nano USM) that they use in other lenses, but for those two, I think the focusing element(s?) are just so big that they had to use the older conventional USM focus motors. The RF 24-70 f/2.8L focuses much faster and quieter than the 50mm prime, but its aperture just isn't as big.

Nikon really needs to reset people's expectations for good imaging equipment. For the past 3-5 years, there has been a singular focus on eye-AF (pun intended). Nikon images look great sooc, so any post work is enhancing rather than 'fixing'. Nikon photographers talk about 'color science' less than C/S because we have to worry about it less. Ergonomically and operationally, these cameras simply work. And the lenses...

Sealed body (For heavy rain and salty air), no overheating issues (I do video 4K with Z9 and Z6II), no focus breathing is somelike key cause I compose close and away within 2 shots simultaneasly, Balanced system (no injuries on arm). All this at extreme low light conditions where I use ISo 2000 to 12500. Thousands of people pass through me and my focussing accuraccy is higher than 90%. A whole month of february at full action. Was imposible to to this with R5 and R6, they just shut down. So everytime I hear complain on Nikon, my experience as a professional photographer differs like you say.

We need more people like you and not some TH-cam guys that work mainly with Canon and Sony gear and have no experience with Nikon at all. By the way: Is the Canon R5 still overheating? I agree that the top, top photographers are not using iPhones for pro shoots, but I'm talking about people who might've been hired by someone to take their grad pics just 10 years ago. Now, they just get a friend to snap shots with a smartphone using that fake bokeh look. That's a big part of the prosumer market - the casual hobbyist. And that's where I see smartphones eroding prosumer sales. But photos like the one at 2:08 cannot be replicated by a smartphone (at least not yet)

You as a Canon shooter have a look on Nikon gear. That's fine. I like it. Thank you for the comments on the Nikon S 85 mm f/1.2. Popular or not let me say: Pentax released two years ago its full frame D FA 85 mm f/1.4, which is so far away from the recent Pentax reputation (APC-C, small budget, entry level cameras in all colors etc.). I use it myself. It really performs superbly, fast AF. What about having a look on this stuff from time to time beside the main stream gear?

Knocking on the Z9 af is splitting hairs especially at 1.2
At this point the big 3 (Nikon Sony canon ) are all pretty good and have pros and cons with each system.

I can't say from direct experience but it seems from all major reviewers, the Nikon AF is a step behind Canon and Sony. Maybe it's not a big step, but definitely a step.

9 vs 11 blades and you can't see the difference? Of course you won't see it at f1.2. The difference will be noticeable when you stop the lens to f2, or even better to f4.

08:50 This section, where you look at it from a non-youtuber perspective, thinking about our pockets. Thanks for that. Too many youtubers try and sell us on the latest and greatest. So it's good you are coming from a much more grounded angle. I would suggest only go for a 1.2 if I were shooting paid professional or high level creative work. Amateurs who spend their hard earned cash on a 1.2m thinking it will improve their photography could be in for a disappointment, if they don't know what they are doing.

Good Documentary - think that with further F/ware updates on Z cameras may improve operation between Z Camera and Z lens - only think that Z9 will be really enhanced for this lens and its 2nd Gen AF. Fingers cross for Nikon to pull its socks up and Get Z7 III / Z8, Z6 III and a Z70 (R7 rival) out of the door in 2023.

@TappaTop The shape comes from a small plate called a GOBO that is placed inside the holder of a projector lensed, spotlight attachment for strobes or actual projector attachments for strobes. Look up videos for how to use or MAKE Gobo’s. Good luck!!

In regards to the lashes, if you change your focus to Wide plus people instead of using the whole frame and maintaining the box on her head you'll more often than not remove this issue.

Hey Manny, I need your help. I bought an Atamos for my Nikon Z9. How do you record the evf while shooting pictures. Every time, after I shoot 2 pictures, the Atamos stops recording. How can I make the Atamos continually record the evf even if I shoot 100 pictures ??? Thanks man!😀

You should spend your time testing the lens and not constantly comparing it to Sony and Canon. It's called a Nikon review. Just review the lens for Nikon shooters...
We Nikon shooters only need to compare it to the 85mm 1.8s

So glad I got rid of all me new gear envy years ago! I make fantastically easy crazy money doing studio portraits with the exact same camera and lens for the last 7 years! Canon 1DX original and 24-105 f4. That's all I need. Money pours in a nd people gush all over the image quality even thou its only 18MP sensor. Absolutely no need for an upgrade.

Thinking of getting the Nikkor 85mm f1.2 s for my Z7ii. Would it work well with that body for portraits outdoors? Is a better body like the Z8 or Z9 really that necessary for the eye tracking and for what I want?

A good photographer would nail focus on a 1.2 aperture on manual mode. It's not the Z9, it's user error.
