You used the analogy of Spiderman: Far From Home being Sony's Golden Goose. Sony only provided the Goose while Disney & Marvel provided the Midas touch that turned it to gold. That next Spiderman isn't guaranteed to be the same kind of hit i know for myself the only reason i went is because of it's ties to the MCU.

I sure hope The Farewell gets some serious nominations. I finally got the chance to see it a couple weeks ago and was deeply touched. So far it’s in my top five movies of the year.
I think one thing that gets lost in this conversation around box office, is not just that people are more discerning when it comes to what they watch on the big screen, but that so many have big screen tvs at home that the movie experience (on a slightly smaller scale) can be mostly recreated at home without the negatives of going to the multiplex. 🍿 🎥
That is not how marketing is looked at. Some stores and companies close if profits are not increased ( ahem GameStop) even if doing ok. The part about growing in the market place in economy ( malls, newspapers in paperform, stores, movies, gaming, ect.) is truly being affected by online steaming and digital downloads.
It is interesting to note that outside of Disney and Spider-Man, no other studio film has reached $200 million domestically this year. Us got the closest at $175M. Just goes to show how Disney truly suffocated a lot of the competition this year.

So in one year from now we will have come full circle then. We stop paying for cable because it was too expensive, now every studio wants to have their own streaming platform which ammounts to the same as having cable, same deal with binge watching. Streaming is so popular because you dont have to wait a week for the next episode, and they wonder why piracy has gone up.
I don't know how some of those smaller studios are still a thing with such low income, but maybe they have a much smaller overhead as a result I guess. Disney doesn't want to buy any of them that's for sure, lol. They'd probably get them at a discount.
i hope in the near future all the big budget movies will be available for streaming right away. i'd love to invest in a comfy chair and big flat screen. and never have to leave the house
I am glad Disney+ isn't doing the binge model. I am more of a week to week watcher becuz I just can't watch tv for more than 2-4 hours at a time. It took me a week to watch Stranger Things 3 and Glow on Netflix. Plus there is just so much content to consume theses days outside of tv. I just don't have the time to watch 8 hours of tv in one day or weekend.

You can't calculate the same way for horror movies as blockbusters. The larger chunk of cost for them is not production cost, it's propagation and ads
