- This week kicks off with a day-trip to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, where I explore New Mexico's stunning subterranean landscape. Then, I venture south into Texas to experience Big Bend Ranch State Park, both by Jeep and on foot. After experimenting with various foods at camp, I make my way Terlingua for a proper burrito.
Yes, there is something special about BB. There is a quiet elegant beauty about it. It feels special and you don't know why. It's different from the enchanting feeling of the NM desert. Big Bend has then zen like peaceful energy. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
Nothing like enjoying a warm sunny Sunday morning sitting in my Jeep enjoying the river and watching your video. Thanks Chris!
Watched this video again...
Liked it even more the second time..
Simple pasta..
Garlic powder
Garlic salt
Parsley chopped
Olive oil
Butter..
All to taste.
Throw in grilled chicken or steak or not.
Hope this might help with an easy meal Chris.
Just got back from Big Bend Ranch State Park last week! Stayed at the Rincon 2 campsite because of this video. Made it there in a stock 2012 forester on falken wildpeaks!
GORGEOUS SCENERY COLORS VIEWS VIDEO ! LOVED THE MULES & LONG HORN CATTLE TOO ! GLAD YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR THE WATER . BEAUTIFUL PLACES TO VISIT ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! ENJOYED !
You missed one of the prettiest sites in W. Texas, McKittrick canyon! It is near Guadalupe Peak that you videoed as you were coming into Texas. Thanks for visiting our great state. Kick back ans stay awhile and you come back now, ya hear!
Your videos get better every week Chris. Your videos have become my Friday night routine. Enjoy all that beauty!
My wife and I just returned from Big Bend National Park and primitive camped. We even ran our Jeep through Black Gap Trail. Very warm and dry, but an experience that should be on an adventurists bucket list for sure. Great video.
Thaks for the wonderful video. I grew up in SW N.M. and have been to Carelsbad Caverns six times in my life. I have never been to Big Bend yet but its on my list. I have been all over New Mexico and there is so much to see. I have a 2007 jeep jku and it has 263,000 miles. My son and I did a loop in SW New Mexico. We hit the Gila Wilderness, Valley of Fires, Three Rivers petrogliffs White Sands NM, City of the Rocks and the Gila Cliff Dwellings. I tyr to never miss an adventure.
nice video,,,, good use of the jeep,,,,4 wheeler and RV all in one,,,,,good job.
Good job Chris, thanks for transporting me from Morgantown, Pennsylvania to Texas. Love your posts.
Thank you
I’ve been going back watching all your old videos while waiting for this one to come out. Keep up the great work, Chris!
I luv the quiet desert. I go every summer for the last 20 summers. Big Bend is special. Can't wait until I retire so I can visit it in the spring.
Very well done! I like your style of presentation and your videography. Safe and happy travels!
The Road to Nowhere in Big Bend RSP is on my bucket list for sure. Great video!
Chris, I'm late to the party but was immediately hooked on your channel. Binging to catch up. Much respect for having the stones to follow your passion and live life on your own terms. Living vicariously brother!
Wow, you do a great job, and I know all of those walk by captures are a lot of work but greatly appreciated. Beautiful footage.
I love your video's Chris. The amount of work you do to properly capture and present your journey is really stunning. The solo travel, in the manner you have chosen, has a very strong appeal. I look forward to walking in your footsteps.
Great video. I live in El Paso, so Big Bend is not far from me. My family are just now getting into Overlanding and camping. You've earned a new subscriber.
I have been to Big Bend three times and now thanks to your video, I am feeling the draw again!
Big fan of Terlingua also. Been there twice in 4 years. Tried to truck-camp outside the Marfa Lights viewing area back in November and about froze my cajones off.
This video is exhausting, from the viewpoint of a solo videographer and an editor. Well done.
Glad you kept the hat on, I burn on overcast days just as easily as full sun days. I was thinking you might need that.
Absolutely awesome content.... Sir, y’all awesome
Thank you for sharing your videos
Beautiful scenery, looked like some fun hikes as well, that burrito looked awesome! I enjoy your vids and look forward to watching them. Thank you for the relaxing entertainment!
Beautifully shot. Great footage
Those are the lower flatirons of The Solitario Dome in the background @ 16:24. It's one of my favorite places in the Big Bend area.
Canyon wrens galore! Every time you hiked into the canyons, those descending bird calls were canyon wrens! Great episode!
Hey Chris, started watching your vids 6 weeks ago and have now finished all of them. Much admiration fo what ya do. Just started getting my 2018 jk Golden Eagle ready for over landing. Cargo steps, CVT Shasta tent, CVT awning, 67 designs options and it's just the beginning. I will be supporting you soon. I'm a 54 yr old corporate guy with a desire to explore and a fly fishing freak. I'll see ya out there some day. See ya on the move next Friday.
100% agree on you with Big Bend. I’m 19 now and have gone every year from Dallas and it always draws me back.
Henry S around what month do you always go to big bend?
You’ll end up living out here when you’re old, like me ❤️
@@xhtownx1524 usually April or May, or October/November
@@Sabbathissaturday I actually moved out there last summer and worked in Lajitas at the general store! Hoping to move back for a few months/year and work with my friend at the High Sierra. Such an awesome place.
I like your style. Welcome to Texas
I have been to big bend four or five times and to Carl’s bad caverns love them both
Your videos make me relaxed and like I’m there with you, Great work!
One of the most likable Jeepers on TH-cam, no doubt. I just took mine out to Big Bend during spring break (had a little better luck with weather) and there's so much to see and explore.
A quick note, though, from this Texas History teacher: It's just called the "Rio Grande". "Rio Grande River" essentially translates to "Big River River".
I'm Mexicano and I called
El Rio bravo.
Though.I grew up in the USA and learned to call it the Rio Grande, my mother who was born and raised in Mexico always corrects me that it is called el Rio Bravo.
@@fabiolacanta Ah, very good point!
I discovered your channel recently and have been binge watching and really appreciating your outlook and insights! I'm not sure what I'm going to do now that I'm up to date and have to wait another week for a new episode... Keep up the great work sir!
New subscriber. Great production values. Very Very professional. I used to hike over rugged terrain, but at 73 knees a bit shot so I'm joyful to live a bit vicariously through your videos. Thanks.
Very nice! The Jeep looks great!
Thank you. "If a man has no destination, any road will lead him there"..
Me and my two sons went last summer I absolutely love that area of texas
I definitely enjoy watching your videos and travels.. It would be nice to be able to travel this path of yours.
Manos arriba.
Two thumbs up 😀
Amazing!! We were just at Big Bend and our perspective was completely different 😜
Nice meeting you at the campsite the other day!!
Awesome episode Chris!
Very good video and above all good place to rest and meditate, I congratulate you I know over there I've been several times
Love your videos, that cave was amazing!
Great video; those caverns reminded me of the ones in Luray, VA
I Love Big Bend. I just did a 40mile hike there in November(Outer Mountain Loop + South Rim). There is something really special about that place. I can't wait to get back out there.
Awesome video! I’m definitely headed there soon! Be safe.
This year was our 7th trip to Big Bend. Great shots and footage.
A really nice video, my wife and i have been to BBNP and Terligua, one of my favorite places in the world is the Starlite.
I like this guy’s approach on this trip. Going it solo instead of descending down on this beautiful place with an army of overlanders tearing up the countryside.
Years ago I’d planed a trip to the Big Bend region. Plans changed in route, wound up in Palo Duro Canyon, Las Vegas NM, Santa Fe NM, and a night at Earth Ship (100% off grid housing) north of Taos NM. 2000 miles of unplanned traveling in ten days before heading back to Dallas where I’d lived at the time. I love traveling.
Chris, excellent video! Your episodes bring this calm feeling over me every time I watch them. The production value is on par with a major motion picture. The video shots also remind of an old CBS News anchor by the name of Charles Kuralt. He had a soothing similar format for his Sunday Morning show. Big Bend, Texas is beautiful. You didn't mention all the stars you could see at night. Anyway, keep up the good work. Let me know when you're in San Antonio, Texas. I'll take ya out to some good pizza. :)
On your drive from Carlsbad to Big Bend it looked like you blew right past El Capitan which is in Guadalupe Mtn Natl Park. It is really worth a visit there are great hikes and views and the highest peak in Texas. No roads though you have to walk. Great video glad you enjoyed your visit
Another relaxing and inspirational video. I’ll be taking my Jeep out very soon for some trail riding and exploring, until then you got me covered!
The warm weather is great. Nice episode
Look forward to this every week, love the channel. Makes my life seem depressing though.
chris, once again great video, also perfect edition, beautiful places.I'm waiting for a video in very green closed forest and waterfalls, the dica.parabens.no is waiting for the next anxious video.
30 sec. in and I'm amazed at the time and effort that must have taken! Keep it up!
Always enjoy Chris . If you get to the Sun valley area in Idaho . Let me know I'll buy you a beer.
Back in 1979, I was on a work assignment at Hume Lake Christian Camps east of Fresno. A certain Dick Shontz, an electrician from San Jose, I believe, brought his family up for a work-vacation stay. Wonderful people. Any connection?
We just got back from Big Bend National Park and spent 3 nights primitive camping in the backcountry. We drove 50+ miles on 4WD roads from east to west on the River Road in the southern part of the park. It was great scenery and fun driving. Lots of things to explore - old mines, old ranches, hiking. You can camp for up to 14 days by getting a $12 backcountry permit, no other fees. Sites are assigned when you get your permit at the backcountry office at the Ranger Station.
Awesome episode as always
Very well shot and relaxing video mate. Even the style of the shoot makes me feel as though I was winding down for the weekend's adventure! Good work sir
Awesome!! Don’t forget about the Marfa Lights.. :)
Great video
Big Bend is my happy place. The title of your video sums it up, There's Something about it....it's hard to pin down, but it calls to you.
Another great video, thanks
Beautiful video.
Watch out for them Chupacobras. Thanks for another great video.
I was at Big Bend NP at the same time! It did get very hot in some of the canyons.
I love the video, but I was hoping that you showed your viewers the amazing Guadalupe Mountains National Park. You drove through it in your video. It is not to be missed. The highest peaks in Texas are there, and it is a wilderness park, meaning that it has minimal intrusion by humans.
I have been just about everywhere out west, and I put the Chihuahuan Desert portion of the United States (and northern Mexico)to be one of,if not the most, spectacular region on the continent.
Loved your video. You do a great job editing them. I have not been to Big Bend, Texas but I need to go there since I live here in Texas. This is a good time of the year to go because it sure would be hot during the summer. The shots of the rams coming out of the cave were very interesting. You didn't let us know what the story was with the rider less horses. So how many miles do you have on your Jeep now 130,000? What is your long term plan for your next vehicle? Thanks for taking us with you
those cavers were awesome
Love Carlsbad Caverns. Safe Travels Brother and God Bless!
Great video 👍🏼
Oh yeah man you know how to live life I am glad I found your channel.
When you found that BBQ lid and cleaned it up I was thinking Scottle Pizza, GO ! LOL Seriously though, you really should try to eat better food than spam spaghetti...he didn't even heat up the sauce...OH ! If you buy a pack of chicken breasts and cook it all you will have cooked chicken ready for a cold chicken sandwich or quick fajitas on the scottle with some sliced red and yellow peppers or add some to soup or noodles etc...I buy Kraft sandwich spread for sandwiches and burgers. It's mayo with relish, mustard, minced garlic, onion, pimento and seasonings in it. Good stuff. And the plastic jar it comes in doesn't take up much room either. Take Care Chris !
Also, since you have a boat, consider a “boomerang” trip into Santa Elena Canyon. Paddle upriver about 5 miles, check out Fern Canyon on the Mexican side, and then return back to the mouth. It’s an awesome place. As long as the flow is not too high, it’s an easy paddle up stream. No rapids to speak of.
Looks like we were there at the same time, it's crazy how big the park is, not all that unusual that we didn't cross paths. You need to hit OSO Loop and the Road to Nowhere if you haven't already.
Really enjoying your travel adventures, Chris!
Awesome pictures and a wonderful trip 😃👍🏻
Very cool footage. But carefully scraping off the non stick coating from the pan with a steel spoon???? Noooooo! 😱
Did you ever make it up the Road to Nowhere? That is an awesome trail!!! Highly recommended!
Terlingua and Big Bend are both great....missed out on our planned Dual Sport Ride this Spring, but will be back, probably in the Wrangler....but I will be back, this time probably for fall 2020 trip....not for the Smart Phone and Night Bar Scene folks....but great for a get away...
Love the hat, looks like it is oiled, like Filson? Anyway, from an old coastal lifeguard, you can still get sunburned when it is cloudy.
hey Chris, have you considered setting up an Amazon store? It would be an easy way for people to find the stuff you use that has worked well in a full-time travel environment, and make you a little extra money in the process without costing people anything. Things like the BihlerFlex Bungees, RAM Mounts, the much-lauded multi-purpose toilet/table, camera equipment, computer accessories/drives, and cooking equipment would all be candidates for a store. I personally plan to purchase the BihlerFlex Bungees based off of seeing them on your channel, and would gladly use a link that helped support the creation of more content if one was available.
We have explored much of the southwest and some of the same places you have gone to. Love the fact that you don't use some crappy music that only you like and instead capture the sounds of nature and quiet. Here's a tip on staying cool while desert hiking; WHITE long sleeve cotton shirt, canvas wide brimmed hat, at least 1 bandanna around your neck. dunk or splash water on all of these BEFORE you head out and if there are pot holes of water or seeps you can re-soak said items during your hike. Check out my vids on using a simple fire pan to leave no trace.
Nice ,I love iT Evert time I Watch a video from you .👌
I would watch out for the mountain lions and/or bears!
Hi Chris
Another great post. My weekly fix. Got addicted and subscribed months ago. The scenery in big bend reminds me of our Flinders Ranges.
Cheers from Australia
Nb can you give us the details of that water ‘bag’ that seems to have a pump & hose...looks real handy
It's called a Nemo Helio shower. They're about $180 in Australia. I bought one after seeing Chris use his. Works very well.
Anthony Gatley thx Anthony
Tacos, burritos, enchiladas are simple and can be made
at camp if you’re tired of the same stuff. Great video as always.
Awesome work. Keep it up. My dad and myself are heading that way to Big Bend soon. But were going through Balmora to Ft Davis and going towards that direction. He will be on his Ural motorcycle and i will be on my Harley Davidson. With a chase truck with my brother in law.
IMO the drive between Ft.Davis and Alpine is probably the most beautiful stretch of road in Texas. If you like that kinda terrain.
I'm glad they have chichi potty down there, I often need to bleed my bladder. Sardines Chris, that's what's wanted. You need some fish. Of course you don't read comments, but maybe a reader eat sardines. I love them rascals. Fishing groceries, that's what they are for me.
At 23:20, you summed up Big Bend really well. It’s a magical place indeed, and it’s hard to explain to others how cool it really is.
If you should come through San Antonio, hit me up and I’ll treat you to a meal and a beer.
Quite well done, very creative. Pleased to meet you, I just subscribed!
Great videos. We are heading to Big Bend at Christmas. Got a question. The night you hit Starlight where was that you stayed? Was that in the park? Thanks.
I like your style
My compliments. Your filming is terrific. Second, i love the Big Bend area. The national park is one of my favorites. been there five times. Beautiful. And YEAH BUDDY! SPAM!!! Did you customize your Jeep to have the fold up sleeping area? How did u do that?
Campsite 1 - My buddies and I stayed there a year ago on our bikepacking trip. We left the Jeep in Terlingua and rode up there.
