    RIP to the director Albert Pyun, who did his best as a B-movie director doing a comic book movie on a shitty script and a low budget. After all, this is produced by Menahem Golan (RIP as well), the same co-producer of SUPERMAN IV and MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, so cutting costs on superhero movies was kind of his specialty.

      Marvel virtually went bankrupt in the 80's, so sold movie rights for peanuts and with no quality control over the film by them. Hence Cannon buying Spider-Man, Captain America. And Fantastic Four ending up with Roger Corman. The Punisher also got a bad, low-budget movie. But even the high budget Quality movies didn't win, e.g. George Lucas producing Howard The Duck.

      It kind of makes you wonder where such a bizarre idea got into his head to begin with but it’s almost a perfect microcosm of how shallow the majority his reviewing skills really are and considering his fall from grace and the fact that the majority of people these days no longer take him seriously as a reviewer it’s even more jarring in retrospect. Looking back 15 years ago (amazing to think it’s been almost 20 years since Nostalgia Critic first arrived on the scene, during those years I had recently finished high school and just entered college at the time when I encountered his videos on TH-cam for the first time, wow! time flies!) it’s a wonder that so many of us back then hung on his every word seeng him as this “expert” which seems so silly in hindsight but then again when he was at his peak before he fell from grace many of us at the time were in our teens or early 20s and as we matured we started to realize that his videos in spite of what he called them weren’t even “reviews” they were just opinionated rants. And gradually we began to realize that we all need to take a lot of “reviews” of his with a grain of salt. Don’t get me wrong, occasionally he would bring up few a good points every now and then that even today we could still agree with in some of his videos. After all, as the old saying goes “ even a broken clock can be right at least twice a day” but let’s not kid ourselves, even those occasionally “valid” points were few and far between and in my opinion those few that hit the mark were in spite of him, not because of him, that’s becoming abundantly clear with each passing year since his fame imploded into infamy.

      @@limelightraver5690 I fell out of love with Nostalgia Critic maybe 10 years ago. But I swear ever since I've started watching Double Toasted, I've really started to understand just how bad of a reviewer he is.

      How so, specifically in your opinion? I agree with you, I’m just genuinely curious to know which Double Toasted videos you saw that convey your point in that regard. I’m genuinely interested in watching them. Which videos specifically where they? Regarding the ones that you would recommend that gradually helped you realize just how bad of a reviewer he really is. Do you remember what they were titled? By the way, while we’re on the subject of Doug Walker, Did you ever see the Double Toasted video from last year I think where Doug is being interviewed and he says something along the lines of “We tried to go too big” which sounds a bit like cope and sour grapes on Doug’s part if you ask me. It definitely sounds like something a washed up Internet “celebrity” like him would say.

    • @codafett
      @codafett ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@limelightraver5690 Take for example the Nukey video. DT has no fear of calling out racism, meanwhile Doug will dance around it. Another one would be the Double Team review or any number of movies that they've both done.
      You know what the real issue is? Doug doesn't understand movies, he hasn't been in the film industry, all he knows is what he considers bad and what he considers good. Plus he's not a reviewer, he's a children's entertainer. You can see that in all his thumbnails with him making some obnoxious face or being an edgy 45 year old man. Morey and Martin do understand and they do actual research before they put a video out. The difference is night and day.

    This came out during the Al Milgrom and Ron Lim run, on Captain America. Was really looking forward to seeing this. That’s why it hurt so much when I finally did. The biggest problem for me was the lack of formidability. Rogers is one of, if not the best hand to hand fighter in the MU. This movie reduced him from being an unparalleled ass kicker to always getting his ass kicked and running away. Nowadays, this is just a poorly made movie that’s good for a laugh. Over 30 years ago, it was like getting kicked in the teeth. This totally dropped the ball.

      @@nivekleveb8872 - not talking about the writers. Milgrom and Lim were kind of sharing artistic duties on Captain America, during the late 80’s/early 90’s. But, in all honesty, Mark Gruenwald (R.I.P.) was indeed the man.

    The 90s were a crazy age for comics since sales were low and the big corps Marvel and Detective Comics were looking for something to keep things fresh. Marvel itself could have gone bankrupt.
    So we got wild ideas like Venom and the Dark Phoenix Saga in Marvel and the Death of Superman and the death of Robin in DC. Pushing the envelope didn't always go well, but it eventually paid off.

    I get why, given the low budget, they would have had a hard time paying makeup artists to constantly apply and remove Scott Paulin’s Red Skull makeup (since he obviously couldn’t keep it on 24/7 for the entire movie shoot), but then why did they go the route of making him physically deformed instead of just having him be a guy wearing a mask, like he was for a long time in the comics? It would surely have been cheaper to create a crimson-colored, skull-shaped helmet for the actor to wear all the time (maybe have him be in an accident that fuses it to his face). Would it have been too goofy? I dunno… your main hero wears fully-body blue spandex and has plastic ears and tiny little wings on his head, so I doubt the former would out-goofy that XD

    If you wana get all technical the "Nazis" in the opening scene are actually Mussolini's Italian Fascist Blackshirts. Which explains why Red Skull becomes an adult after being captured. Fascist Italy existed from 1921-1945 longer than Nazi Germany did. Yes I'm one of them history nerds lol.

    • @daliborjovanovic510
      @daliborjovanovic510 ปีที่แล้ว

      Red Skull was kidnapped in 1936 as a kid (presumably 12) and in 1943, he would be around 19 (albeit majorly disfigured), and about 66 in the present day of 1990 (though possibly more fit due to the super soldier serum).
