      Interestingly they had a sequel planned after this with Joel signed up to direct. The villians were slated to be Scarecrow Harley Quin and Manbat. They changed Harleys origin from being Jokers girlfriend to being the Jokers daughter because Joker died in the 1989 movie. Interestingly Scarecrow was the main villian and Jack as the Joker was approached to return and he was down for playing the Joker again. Jack was going to return as the Joker in fear gas hallucinations from the Scarecrows gas the films tone was going to be like Batman Forever again. The title was intended to be Batman Triumphant but it was canceled do to backlash from Batman and Robin.

    I always felt this was a movie that tried to have its cake and eat it too. It tried to have more serious elements like Mr. Freeze's motivation to save his wife, Alfred's illness, and Batgirl's tragic past..... but it also wanted to be a campy cartoon like the Adam West Batman, and so we got ridiculous moments like Mr. Freeze in fuzzy polar bear slippers leading a singalong of frozen henchmen. It was like water and oil, though, the two didn't go well together and you just had a mess.
    Still, credit where credit is due, Arnold chewed the hell out of the scenery, and this movie is endlessly quotable for all the wrong reasons. In small doses I can take it, just never ask me to actually watch it unless I'm really, REALLY drunk.

    Honestly I almost respect how much this film gets wrong, mostly because a lot of it can't even really be attributed to Shumacher, or even Clooney and Schwarznegger. It's a textbook example of how a film being a byproduct of a franchise or merchandising really just backfires
    It's still an absolute guilty pleasure movie though. Shumacher became a strong advocate for doing a Year One-type film after how badly this film was received and it inadvertently led to films like the Nolan trilogy and The Batman that treated the character's comics as respectable forms of storytelling again

I do think that "Batman Forever" gets unfairly maligned and lumped in with "Batman & Robin" in terms of bottom-of-the-barrel superhero movies. "Forever" was a good, lighthearted Batman movie that at least attempted to delve into the psyche of Bruce Wayne a bit, which was more than what was explored in either of the two Burton movies, where Keaton's Batman wasn't really a character. "Batman & Robin" REALLY feels like an extended episode of the 1960s Adam West show, but with too much money thrown at it lol. This movie is fun.... but fun for all the wrong reasons lol.

    This movie is a perfect example of why tonal balance is so important in superhero and blockbuster movies. Batman and Robin is campy and light hearted but goes so far in one direction, that it justifies why superhero movies like X-Men and Batman Begins were a bit more serious.

    I enjoy this movie. It doesn't always work (why even have Bane in it?) but it feels like an attempt at a 90s version of the Adam West show, which I grew up with, and which probably is the most comics-accurate Batman movie made. Accurate to the 50s-60s comics, that is. I'm not saying B&R was successful at it, but I still enjoy the effort personally.
    I enjoy the Nolan films and the new Batman was OK, but Batman doesn't need to be semi-realistic or grim-dark all the time. People seem to forget that the Dark Knight returns comic (Frank Miller) which basically popularized the dark tone after 50+ years, still had a lot of humor. I feel like alot of people took the wrong lessons from tDKR and Year One, and suddenly we had stupid shit like the Joker without a face or Harley Quinn blowing up children. And then completely joyless (but competent) movies like the Batman.
    I am thankful there has been room for silly stuff like the 60s Batman, B&R and the Gotham show.
    That said, the 90s animated show and the Justice League show have probably my favorite version of Batman outside of the comics. And the animated versions of tDKR and the Killing Joke are some of the worst things I've ever seen.

    I hated the way they did Batgirl the most. I love this character but I hated how this movie did her. A Butler’s niece!! How does a Butler’s niece know martial arts? It doesn’t work as much as a commissioner’s daughter.

    • @biguy617
      @biguy617 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @It aint no thing maybe but Barbara going to prep school lowers her character. Batgirl is sometimes as smart as Batman when it comes to detective work. I don’t see that coming from a Butler’s Niece. I see that coming from a Commissioner’s daughter.
