Should I let my daughter beat me in basketball? 🤔 **Update** here is the article to set up the automations: smarthomesolver.com/reviews/10-new-automations-for-2024-how-to-setup/
Love the idea of the lights dimming and turning off depending on playback, I did that in my theater room recently and it's my favorite automation to date.
I would love to know how that automation work as well. I just had my man cave built and would love to learn that automation for when I have theater nights.
Loved it ❤❤ I am little slow on implementation at my place but managed to start living with 40 smart devices via home assistant till now. Door Bell notification on All family members phone and speakers is one of the best things I've done. Showing it off to few people lead to 2 requests for automating their homes too but due to a full time Job, have requested them to wait a couple of months, as I am already working on custom Tasmota based relay boards which will go inside the switch panels of a typical India based switch panels. Thanks for sharing your Automation Ideas, A few of These can be very productive 🙏🙏
For the door bell, when the door is closed and the lights are off in the TTR (tiny terror room) if the door bell button is pushed, then turn on a smart color bulb to red. Or maybe a strobe light on a smart plug.
5:20 I appreciate the notice here but I really think that you should be disclosing in your ad that their autopilot is a recurring indefinite subscription that locks the majority of the already very expensive product’s feature behind.
One of my newest automations which I love is to get a notification from Home Assistant with a button that takes me to the relevant shipping list for either the hardware store or supermarket. I used zones in the main local stores that I frequent. It works perfectly.
I have a similar automation setup with my Google TV stick, but did tweak it so that if the light switch (with a shelly) is in the on position then do the auto lights up/down while watching tv, otherwise leave the light in its current state. Thanks for another great vid.
I do something similar with wind speed - If its too strong, or the gusts are too strong, then it turns off the pond pump, as otherwise, all the water is blown away :D
My wife hates when I do home automation until she gets used to them then she sees the value. Garbage collectors come every Wednesday so on Tuesday evening Amazon Dot reminds us to take out the trash. Several times she has said ‘oh I forgot’. Automation is a great thing in many ways. Thanks great video.
I have something similar but I just use the Aqara FP2 sensors. I use time & zones as triggers if either myself or wife get out of the bed with repeat - # - wait 10sec to shut it off. But the beauty is that depending where you go it will follow us, down the hallway and down the stairs then do everything in reverse. The pressure mat is a decent idea but really impractical and behind the curve.
Love the TV lights! I'll have to try that out. I've been watching the Eight Sleep for a long time now. Too bad most of the features are paywalled behind a subscription model and everything stops working if it loses cloud connection. As soon as Eight Sleep or another company solves those two issues, I'll be getting one immediately!
Forreal. Premise of the 8sleep product is amazing (assuming it doesn’t have leaking problems), but for a product like this that costs thousands of dollars to ALSO require an expensive monthly subscription for basically all features is ridiculous. These guys have to have huge margins so there’s definitely business opportunity there to compete.
I have the same solution for my TV lights. It's one of my favorite automations. I have set a delay for when they will turn on when paused or idle so they don't turn on between episodes.
Hey Reed, a couple of times in here I noticed you mention that you made one automation to turn things on and another to turn them back off (the basketball lights for example). I've been combining both the "on" and "off" into a single automation using the "choose" action which makes for a much cleaner automation list and makes enabling/disabling much easier.
Yes, this! I just did this with and automation last night. Combined six automations for a scene controller into one. Plan to use this for NFC tag automations as well and maybe clean up some other automations.
@@misteraon yeah, early on I had eight automations controlling four fans in different windows (two intake and two exhaust), but after making some virtual thermostats and merging the automations with choose statements it's now all managed by two automations.
Nice! That is a good way to keep it organized! I’ve done that before but sometimes I prefer to separate them out for debugging when the automation grows and gets more advanced.
@@SmartHomeSolver just figured out last night how to combine the choose option with local calendar. You can add timed events to the calendar with it’s start and end times then those get added to the automation as two separate triggers with templates to filter based on event name. They also get a trigger id assigned. Then the choose action options will execute the appropriate set of actions based on start or end triggers. So on and off actions are all in on automation.
Some GREAT automation ideas. I've been using a Tempest weather station with Homeassistant for the last couple of years and found it to be very useful. I use the rain sensor and external temperature measurement to control whether or not the ventilation to our basement operates. If it is raining or too cold it dosent pull wold wet air into the basement. I use the UV sensor to alert us to th e need to wear sunscreen or a hat. The "feels like" temperature, which takes into account the effect of the wind, is useful to decide what clothing to wear. I also have an automated Polytunnel and the humidity and temperature readings are used to drive ventillation and humidification routines in the Polytunnel. The only sensor that I have found to be sometime unrelaible if the lightning sensor as I occassionally get false alarms, but where I live lightning is both uncommon and rarely a problem so this does not bother me.
Idk what was funnier the kid candy dispenser or you being told at the end to fix all your broken automations 😂 Great ideas! I have used the wind speed for a while now to turn off our holiday blowups as high wind destroys them. The camera motion on the reolink camera also works great as you did with unifi, as I have mine announce when vehicles or people are coming in the driveway and turn on lights and such at night based on those motions. Great idea on the TV pause, I’ll probably use that one! I have a TV on routine for the lights but I like the idea of dimming them up on pause!
I've never actually laughed out loud to an automation youtube video. That candy dispenser is GENIUS! and the last joke about broken automations hit too close to home. Love your videos.
Good idea with those blinds. My blinds close half an hour after sunset (for privacy), and during the day if it's sunny and warm, but go up if it starts raining.
Well done Reed! I do the same with my TV play/pause triggers. I have both the bathroom and kitchen light scenes turn on/off based on the state. I also use the adaptive lighting integration and it works well. Also, not sure if you've tried the Inovelli switches but they are awesome! I use the 2-1 Zigbee version and set up multiple automations depending on the number of presses of the buttons. For example, 2x of the small config button calls the robot vac to clean that specific room. 5x up, opens the garage door and 5x down closes it. 3x down locks all doors and starts bedtime mode. 3x up unlocks the front door only. The LEDs can be configured as multicolor animated notifications. Always look forward to seeing what you've come up with. Thanks for sharing your great ideas!
Thanks! Yes I have the Inovelli zwave version in a couple of spots and I’m using the multiple presses for automations. I love it! Especially the Red version to control smart bulbs.
I had an issue with my outdoor ceiling fans on my deck when I first installed them - high winds will destroy them. I was using airport weather until I got the Weatherflow. Also I'm now using the status of the thermostat (heat/cool) and the temperature outside to control the open/close of the cellular window shades. The next upgrade will be to modify the routines to pull the light intensity to determine if it is sunny or cloudy and get that extra tweak of solar radiation on cold sunny days. I turn on a decorative light 15 minutes before sunset - to remind us to check out the sunset.
I am really excited about the pressure pad. I really hope they add the capability to determine how much weight is on it. I want to use it under my mattress so it will trigger automations when I get into and out of bed. But my kids also end up in our room at night so I don't want the automations to trigger for them (like turning all the lights on/off).
I have the same set up for strip light under the bed. To reduce false detection, I have a bed pressure sensor and motion sensor. It works very well and almost no false triggering. The pressure carpet is nice but you gotta step on it.
I just had an epiphany the past week and did the same light automation for our Roku. It does not respond as quickly as yours, but it is very helpful. I like the idea of using smart plugs to reboot devices. I am going to have to try that. (FYI: I am tossing all my Feit Smart Plugs and Smart Light Bulbs. They keep failing completely or randomly going offline until manually power cycled.)
You are definitely blazing new trails in the smart home automation space!! Besides these videos at your house, the tours of other smart home innovators are really interesting. Could you remind me of the brand of shades you use in this video and more generally what (blackout) shades you recommend for a bedroom? Thanks.
Love all the idea's! Could you make a 'renewed' video on how to start with smart home, especially what devices you recommend and how to use HomeAssistant?
@@MrFatboyRuns I haven't tried a huge amount, but the ones I have tested don't allow you to automate a do not disturb mode. I have to look into that one.
I ran across a video on another channel where he used NFC tags to manage maintenance task (adult chores). He setup reminders in HA to nag him to do something. When he’d complete it, he’d scan the NFC tag near the task…ie clean dishwasher filter…and it would reset the counter/helper. Think of doing the same thing for air filters and smoke detectors. This could work for kids chores too assuming they’re old enough to have a phone.
@@SmartHomeSolver I'm very interested in making a chore dashboard too. I'm disabled and have caregivers that come to assist me daily and have a spare samsung tablet I'd love to set recurring tasks for them to check off.
It just works when the Apple TV state changes to paused which gets triggered when a show ends. That’s what makes it so easy. I’ll have an article on my website soon showing more of the details.
"All your broken automation, no Ice cream for you" That was hilarious and to the point! HA broken automation list keeps piling up every month and you don't feel like deleting them as you spent time on its logic and secretly hope you'll make use of it again after tweaking, but you never do! 😅 10/10 for your automation by the way! 👏👏👏
That one hit too close to home. "I don't want to delete this one yet because it feels close to working, I'll just start a new one and leave that one for now" and ending up with a mountain of automations and never sure which ones are actually working and doing things and which are "running" but not actually doing anything.
With the play pause thing on the TV, how do you cater for other states where you don't want dimmed lights, like if you're eating snacks or doing some other activity on the couch?
I have an input boolean switch that can override it and you can see it in the automation smarthomesolver.com/reviews/10-new-automations-for-2024-how-to-setup/ I also have a video planned on the 2nd channel going into more detail on how to customize this automation even further.

Great automations! I really liked the TV light-dimming one (simple but really useful!), so I implemented that mself. Anyway, I'm not being able to trigger it when playing/pausing Netflix app (any other apps works just fine, it looks like Netflix doesn't udpate the status correctly on GoogleTV). Did you also found this issue? Thanks!
Finally a commercial pressure sensor. A lot of us want that kind of thing but we don't want to jerry rig it ourselves. Definitely looking forward to it and I hope it's not something that's still a year away. We just got to 2024 man lol.
Hi Reed, any idea how to set kasa switches/plugs to be on schedule of the month?.. like i want April 15 at 12 noon the lights should go on and so on...
Was wondering if you would be able to provide me a link or the name of the company that installed your back patio shades? Please also here in Arizona and wanting to add them to my back porch.
Hi @SmartHomeSolver i watch the second video + your text page but did not see that part. As many person ask, how does HA know when to switch lights when credits play? Thank you
Whats the best way to track if phone comes back to wifi? I want to set up a tracker for my people in home assistant but i dont want them to have to download the app or anything
Hi! Do you have a video with the list of all automated light devices for your home and by any chance did you know if is posible work with TreatLife outdoors camera on your automations ?
I had a company here in AZ order and install the outdoor shades, but I mention them in this video: th-cam.com/video/yDNWVRmRHlY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TQPJTE_AcUBf-Xa6&t=202
I am a single parent and on a tight budget and I have some automations for my lights that came with the app. What are some good hubs I should get, also how do I learn to code the automations? If anyone could point me to the right direction, would help a lot!
I’ve had the Tempest weather station since it was first made available as a fund-me project. My biggest disappointment has been lack of HomeKit support which was initially indicated but never materialized.
You can probably get around it by using HA. Then home assistant can present all its devices to HomeKit like it’s a bridge. I use HA as my main “brain” and then HomeKit is used as a layer on top of that so my wife can control things with Siri. For Apple…I find HomeKit to be their most buggy product. HA is way more stable.
Considering eight sleep sponsored you maybe you can ask them when they're going to reintroduce their API so we can integrate with home assistant again.

Love the TV lights, just set it up and it’s already got the wife and daughter’s approval 😂
Haha nice! Good job!
Finally a commercial pressure sensor. A lot of us want that kind of thing but we don't want to jerry rig it ourselves.
Definitely looking forward to it and I hope it's not something that's still a year away. We just got to 2024 man lol.
I don't think it's that far off!
They have been around to thirty + years. They are call burglar alarm pressure mats. A lot cheaper to.
How about placing a pressure sensor under the baby’s mattress?
Now we're talking!
My wife literally posted notes very similar to that on our doorbell. haha.
Please share how you set up that final TV automation, especially the lights on when show ends
Here's an article explaining how to do it smarthomesolver.com/reviews/10-new-automations-for-2024-how-to-setup/
Hi! Do you have a video with the list of all automated light devices for your home and by any chance did you know if is posible work with TreatLife outdoors camera on your automations ?
What smart shades are you using? Did you do a video on them?
These are great. How many can be done without Home Assistant. (Like the TV lighting one a lot.)
@Hit-Profile-Let-Converse No one needs to hear what you fake scammers have to say.
Awesome video like always Reed. Really appreciate it. I have one question, what shades do you have on your patio? They are awesome
Thanks! It's an Arizona based company but these are the ones we got allproshadeconcepts.com/services/sealed-track-system/
Where did you get your motorized solar shades? Somfy motors?
How do you tie unifi protect (doorbell ring and camera motion) into HA?
Here is an article with all the YAML code for each automation you can check out smarthomesolver.com/reviews/10-new-automations-for-2024-how-to-setup/
Do you have a guide of getting HomePod Mini to speak when something is triggered?
Will you show us how to do them all? :)
Any good ideas for smart monitoring water tanks?
I was hoping the lights outside would have been automated with making basketball shots.. sweet ideas reed!
That would be awesome, Brent!
Considering eight sleep sponsored you maybe you can ask them when they're going to reintroduce their API so we can integrate with home assistant again.
I really enjoyed dad mode 😂. I'll try that with SmartThings
can you use that weather station with homey pro ?
One of my favorite TH-camrs
