Good point. I think orchestration is usually overlooked in music analysis - most of it is focused on harmony, melody and form (which is understandable, because music analysis has classical roots). But as we can hear, the whole song is basically the same chord progression (with the exception of the bridge), so paying attention to the chord progression isn't really interesting - it's just 6 chords with three of them being what I would call passing chords). And the structure is very typical pop song structure, so it's really not interesting in that regard either. Instead, the contrasts are made using different orchestration and dynamics. Without all of these details, the song would sound very repetitive.
Actually, the way this song works is not that different from "Smells Like Teen Spirit". You have one chord progression throughout the song, and the contrasts are created by using dynamics, and changes in instrumentation and singing register.
I think especially in pop music harmony and form aren't that important. Or that's stuff that can be learned really fast - most pop songs use a couple of different kinds of forms and most of the harmonies are usually pretty basic stuff (mostly based on two, four or eight bar loops). The analysis of those parts isn't really that interesting and kind of misses the point. A lot more interesting question in pop song writing is how the contrasts between the different parts are created. This of course includes harmonic and structural analysis, but it also includes so much more.

She actually just used a studio that was offering recording & music video packages. Where they write and record a song for you to perform. Many studios offer this to aspiring singers. However, these recording packages can range anywhere from $5k to over $10k for just one song lol. So she only went viral because people actually thought she was a "major label" signed artist who just sounded awful. The only part that was true though was her sounding awful lol.

Sure i prefer rock or jazz but a musician must be able to appreciate all kind of music.

This. Pop is crazy competitive, and the rules are very tight. If you don’t get every element exactly right and then some, you have to try again. Indie pop is a thing and in order to break into the mainstream from it you need to launch a song into the charts stratosphere, or record labels will not give a single solitary fuck about you.

It's one thing when "Mumble Trap Single #2050" is boring, but with amazing studios, tons of funds from labels, and producers like Max Martin who use all kinds of diverse sounds, many songs suffer from annoying choruses, unoriginal lyrics, and overly processed vocals.

It might take 10 mintes to write a song and ten weeks to produce it. Regardless of what you like to listen to personally, you have to admit that all forms of good music require serious talent. Max Martin is a production genius, it's all the subtle sounds he uses to fill the space, sometimes the sound is only in for a few bars, but it keeps your ears 'active' and drawn into his tracks, and the most magical part is you don;t even hear the subtle sounds until you really listen and pick the track apart, that is the real magic of his production work.
His work with Denniz Pop at Cheiron studios is stuff of legend. Seeing and reading interviews with Max, which are few and far between, he refers to how he loved Abba's music and other Swedish artists, and how over the time of a track 3-4mins, there were 3 or 4 little different 'records' in that time.
He loved how the verse/bridge/chorus were each individual songs, and how they changed structure as each one came in, again keeping the listener hooked from the first beat to the last beat.

No one says there´s no work or production value in pop. It´s really hard to write and produce such a catchy song, yet one could easily point out the lack of nutrition in this kind of art. And because of this, of course, no one will remember this music in 10 or twenty years.

I think to say that this kind of music will not be remembered in 10 years is really an underestimation of this kind of music. I can unequivocally say I hate most of his output, so the fact that I can also say he has double-digits of songs that I think are just musically brilliant is just a testament to his skill and work ethic.

I saw this video when Rick first released it. I come back now thinking how lucky we are to have this still. Up Max Martin produced many of the top hts of the 22st century and is notoriously elusive about his process. Watching this is like sitting in on a studio session with the man himself (or as close as most musicians will ever get). Not only that, the song is performed by the arguably the biggest pop star of that year and is still huge at the time I'm writing this. And Ariana is a phenomenal singer giving us a hell of a performance here.
I understand Rick and his main audience prefers talking about rock songs from late 80s and early 90s. I hope he branches out again in the future. Or at least find more modern gems from contemparary producers and songwriters.

This work is as valid as any other piece of music : not tryna explain what pop music stands for or anything but it's always been about love seduction and such, in its main part. Why does it bother people so much ? Simple things are as valid as more complex ones. And dont tell me that this is generic, when you just stated that Max Martin did an incredible job here. Yes pop music has a format. So do other genres. The work on this song is transcendent, period.

Thanks for this great vid ! One of the tracks that is also very interesting is the one called "Synths". It plays an E throughout the chorus, and gives some extra tension to the music. Max Martin does very interesting things with these notes creating very adequate 7 or 9 chords. It's like the chorus of Taylor Swift's "style", which features lots of 7th and 9th in the melody line of the chorus. So brillant.
