I just wanted to bring more attention to it.
I love how most 80s beach boys songs are usually dubious in sound but then you'll get something like this or Crack At Your Love and think "goddammit that's good"
Both songs heavily feature Al Jardine. A true sign of quality
@@meatwoodflacmedia Al Jardine is deffo one of the best. I feel like he shoulda done lead vocals more often
Al ❤ These songs are so good
For some really aggravating reason this excellent Beach Boys cut is not available on Spotify, and I love it! Arrrrrgh!
I know, right???
It’s not on iTunes either, which is odd. Several years back I bought it on iTunes and now I can’t find them anywhere.
Nor Qobuz and Amazon.
Damn I was literally about to make the same point!
I hope that in one of the future box set releases, they include the Still Cruisin album
One of those songs that immediately grabbed me and I instantly fell in love with. The sound, the melody, the text, truly one of the most overlooked Beach Boys songs of all time.
Interesting that Amazon music doesn't have this song available
They need to release this album on Spotify already
This song is sooooooo underrated. I played this on repeat when i was 16, 34 years ago and truly appreciated the lyrics and melody of this cohesive band.
Still my favorite Beach Boys song. We had this on cassette.
I also owned this album on cassette. I listened to it nonstop as a kid, especially this song!
My favorite too!
Fun fact: this song was primarily written by John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas about his daughter (who he was allegedly having sex with) who had called him during her honeymoon and asked him for either money or drugs. When he asked her where she was, she said “Somewhere near Japan”. The original song was apparently 25 verses long and called “Fairy Tale Girl”
Ok that just ruined this classic! Jk lol
Dude... dude....
This song is about Mackenzie Phillips (the little girl in American Graffiti). She was also on the sitcom One Day at a Time back in the '70s but was let go because of her substance abuse issues. She claimed her and her father John did drugs together, starting when she was 11, and that they had a sexual relationship for years when she was a young adult. In 2009 she released a book and was interviewed by Oprah about her allegations.
What the fuck 😭
What a creep 🤬
The Beach Boys were just as good in the 80s as they were in the 60s
How Wonderful !! From JAPAN
❤️☮️🇺🇸
This could’ve been as big as Kokomo
the more i listen the more it becomes AT LEAST a top 15 beach boys song for me, probably top 10
This is sooo much better than most of their famous singles.
A song where the Beach Boys get it right, again!
I think it is the best song the Beach boys ever did ....
Agreed a truly great track
Una joya escondida solo disponible para aquellos que conocen profundamente a los Beach Boys
Lyrics via Google:
Late last night I got an S. O. S.
The fairy tale girl's in deep in distress
She says I don't know where I am
But it's near Japan
My engine's all burned out
My crew has all bailed out
I don't know where I am
But it's somewhere near Japan
And she said
"Rescue me"
I'm somewhere in the
China Sea
I think I'm sinkin' fast
This call is probably my last
I'm throwin' out a life line
And I'm doin' it for old time's sake
Though I know you're gonna break my heart
One more time
Late last night I got an S. O. S.
The fairy tale girl's in deep in distress
She says I don't know where I am
But it's near Japan
My engine's all burned out
My crew has all bailed out
I don't know where I am
But it's somewhere near Japan
And she said "thank you dear"
I think she sounded quite sincere
And when she turned to go
She said "I crave adventure don't you know"
And now she's driftin' on some Chinese junk
Her world is spinning and her hope has sunk
So I close my eyes
And somewhere near Japan
The spinning stopped and the world stood still
I broke her fall and I always will
Strung out in no man's land
Somewhere near Japan
Rescue me
Thank you very much.🙇♂️🙏
Other than a missing word towards the end, and the incorrect 'in's before distress, this is all good.
This song is like the cousin of their Japan themed song "Sumahama" from the LA Light Album (1979)
Great Melody for the wedding singer song. 😊
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who heard it. 😂
i just found a whole collection of cd's that my dad had but idk what to use to play the cd, i saw this name and looked it up and omg im in lovee
This is really music. Hear Beach boys is to transport to the eternal summer
really enjoy this whole album
Absolutely class
Probably their last truly great song.
Island Girl from the same album
2:46 and 2:54 gave me chills
That’s one hot load of nostalgia right there 💦💦💦
Great Tune!!!
A very nice song !
This and she believes in love again are the best BB songs in the 1980s
I love it🎼
Nice 🙂 song.
Lyrics…I met you 20 years ago
And we talked all night
You drank me under the table
Yeah, it was love at first sight
I knew right then and there
I'd grow old with you
I said I'd tell you jokes whenever you are sad
Make you a mom, if you made me a dad
Oh, it's been so much fun
Growing old with you
Oh, oh
So sad it’s not on Spotify still
I came here because of death's dynamic shroud - プライベートアイランド
😂❤😅 my memory ~ history repeats…..
This song was lightly based on makenzie phillips, in a bad place.
A strong contender for one of the best tracks on one of the worst albums.
Weeb anthem
good song tho lol
I don’t know what you mean by Weeb. When I first heard this song on CD that term did not exist 😂
Chad love says otherwise
@E Zace everyone who comments is gay! Me too
nah, that's "Sumahama"

This is from their 26th album.
American affiliation with Japan and it's nearby islands = Mushroom cloud in the Pacific. Lol!!!!
I heard this song was the reason this album has never been reissued, apparently it's about drugs and Wilson was totally unaware of that and once he found out he was horrified as he did not want the band to endorse drug use.
It might have more to do with marketability than just one song on the album? Plus seems like an anti drug song "rescue me" is adding from the perspective of the person on "junk". Today's fans are more interested in the post pet sounds era which will eventually lead to reissues of all the 80s music and beyond
I read it's actually about John Phillips (The Mamas and Papas) daughter, actress Mackenzie Phillips and her drug issues unfortunately John was the root of those problems. I guess "You reep what you sow?"🤔
Actually it's Mike Love and Al Jardine who didn't realize the fairly obvious drug double entendres. Al sings most of them, too.
I had the cd when it first came out, one of my favorites, and my kids, all grown up now, remember the songs and love it when they hear them. Sadly, not on Spotify
Then you heard wrong, lol. Plenty of other Beach Boys songs are about drugs and have been reissued (most obviously I Know There's An Answer - Hang Onto Your Ego has been included on Pet Sounds reissues even!). Not only this but Wilson has never been the one who's cared about songs including drug use (he seems to have very little control over what gets reissued anyway), it was Mike Love who is vehemently anti-drug, along with Al and Bruce to a lesser extent.
This album has never been reissued because its seen as such an embarassment to the Beach Boys legacy, with so many bad tracks. Summer in Paradise is the same
