Um, yes we want prop-styling videos!! Honestly whatever content you want to put out regarding tips/advice you have for fixing our homes, is why we’re here!
I think it's absolutely hilarious that the tip is basically to cover as much of the original apartment as possible. I relate heavily to this in my grey box condo apartment.
I’ve been slowly working on my space since watching your videos and I can’t thank you enough - I finally am starting to feel like my design style is coming together and my home feels cozy!
For my dull box, I get a lot of inspiration from Korean interior design which I would describe as cozy/effortless maximalism but still pretty oriented to white walls and modern finishes. I appreciate that this design style pays attention to the details and respects the scale of the small modern condo. So much furniture in the west is extra large. I have a hard time finding the smaller sized pieces that will really fit into my place.
This is the content I think is really lacking in the design world. It's awesome to see celebrity homes and take inspiration from incredibly designed spaces, but more and more people live in new, modern, grey apartments like the one at 10:04 and it's sometimes difficult to imagine recreating some design ideas in such a characterless aesthetic. Hope to see more content like this on top of the other great stuff you're putting out.
Just to say I'd love more prop styling instruction. I constantly fiddle with arranging things but they never look...natural. Also I don't live in a gray box, thankfully, but this video is so helpful - i'm in love with the green walls/persian rugs room.
Hi Paige. I can't tell you how glad i am i found your youtube channel. I was always very into interior design but since i follow your advice, i FINALLY (after 4 years of trying) like how my place looks. This year i made the mistake to invest in 6 posters from desenio because i thought: well it's fine if i just don't buy boring ones everyone has in their home. I payed 100€ which is very much for me because i am a poor student. But i began hating them just 2 months into having them. Same with almost everything i bought, i was redecorating every 2-3 months because i never actually liked something and didn't know why because i've put sooo much time and effort in choosing the right stuff. The problem was i bought cheap looking stuff, i even thrifted sooo much just cheap mass produced stuff. I just bought whatever i thought fit the right aesthetic but not what i actually like and means something to me. Watching your videos really trained my eye. I am finally free from my old bad habits and stopped buying stuff i actually didn't want! I got rid of my posters and painted myself and nothing looks cheap or instagrammy anymore. You wouldn't believe how thankful i am
Yes so true, as a person who hates grey, cool tones I really related to this! I love textures and warm tones but I rent a place that has cool tones (every place was grey) and I found that multi tonal warm wood tones in furniture, interesting vintage pieces, layered natural fiber rugs, rich bold and creamy colors and lots of art, and warm light really help make the rooms feel cozy!
I bought a grey-box home and couldn’t put my thumb on why it felt so drab and lifeless. I instinctively put warm-toned woods in it and received some criticism for it. Thank you for explaining this to me and vindicating my instincts!
For someone who actually lives in a grey dull box home, with grey walls, floors, curtains and sofa, for 5 years - i can say your tips are soo on point! 5 years ago i thought this 'all grey' style is modern and trendy and beautiful... but then with time i slowly started to understand that this type of 'style' has no life and is taking away my energy.... Cant wait to upgrade my apartment room by room following your suggestions, thank you Paige 💚
YES - I feel so validated!! i’m in the definition of a gray box and i’m a warm toned gal and i have done ALL of these tips. thanks for making me feel like my life is together for a moment. fun side story about one of my pieces! the coffee shop my husband and i met and later got engaged in had this vintage game board table, warm wood and green chairs, (switched out games at the top board), and we would play checkers for hours. he proposed to me while playing checkers on our anniversary. he said he was “missing a piece”, whipped out the ring from the one drawer on the table that kept the game pieces. the coffee shop tragically closed due to COVID, but the owners gave us the chairs and board table. it sits below our gallery wall in its own space. it doesn’t get used often, as you mentioned, but wow does it bring character and life to our gray box :)
I liked that you recommended using bamboo shades. I have used them in almost every house I’ve lived in. They are so easy to install, and I love the light patterns that come through.
Man, I wish I had this video when I moved into my gray box two years ago. I 'leaned in' to the gray with a lot of gray/silver/metal decor and now I want to warm everything up as much as possible. Great tips!
I did the same thing right after we painted our house gray. I had gray couches, gray rugs, gray vases... It makes me cringe now. Funny how trends come and go.
My favorite color pallet for grey spaces is jewel tone. Vibrant pinks, purples, navy blues, golds, yellows and emerald greens really warm up the space.
Wait a minute! Ms.Wassel!! I swear you're in my head or looking at my Google searches bc this video is right on time for my grey dull box(moved into my husband's condo- floors are chocolatey wood and walls are charcoal grey 🥺) Love you and your vids ❤️
I would be so appreciative if you could make an entire video about creating mini spaces within large areas (your last tip). It seems daunting and your advice is amazing.
I love that your videos are always packed full of helpful advice! Not a second of wasted time. I really appreciate that. Thank you for consistently putting out top quality content!
Love this, Paige! Would also love to see a video about how to help if you live in an ugly apartment. My flat is not cute ugly, not vintage ugly, just ugly. Creamy brown walls. Ugly brown carpet. Brown limewash vinyl bathrooms. Shoddy paintwork. Sadly this is the apartment I had to go for as there’s a major rental housing crisis in the uk right now! It’s SO hard to add vintage elements without it just looking tatty, and it’s hard to work with the rubbish furniture that comes with the place. Would love to hear your tips!
I love this! Can you also talk about those mid 2000's kitchens that are all a similar shade of brown? Brown cabinets, brown granite countertops, brown back splashes.... I don't want to fully overhaul my full kitchen but need some change!!
I have one of those brown kitchens. I painted the walls green and went with a white dinning table. Also, removing a few of the cabinet doors can help. Our white dishes and glassware on the open shelves break up all the brown.
Yes agreed! I feel like have the opposite problem of the gray box problem, I live in a dated, dingy beige box- soulless late 70s architecture combined with early 2000s landlord special finishes. Not sure how to make it feel more modern and fresh but still have character.
Off topic but here it goes. I have mostly modern colorful furniture but I moved to a very western town in Arizona. I mixed some rustic pieces together with it to go with the theme of my area. I even have a silver metal cow skull over my sofa. The final product came out amazing.
I honestly love modern, high rise living. The walls are white, though! Everything feels so clean and easy on the eyes. I live in NYC and it is a respite from the chaos outside…
Thank you🙂 I always have an internal conflict....... Want cosy snuggly warm and colour and yet need my white clear peace as an antidote to the outside world.... Always working on the balance x
I have fond memories of my tiny grey box apartment from my mid twenties! It was very stylish at the time and my friends complimented it all the time! A lot of the design ideas Paige mentions were thing I did though! Multiple lamps/candles, textured curtains, decor trays, no other grey decor, lots of art and playing with pattern and color!
I just moved into a nice house that was built a few years ago - ALL gray and white! It's so sterile and I've been overwhelmed with what to do with it/where to start. Love your video, thanks!
It reminds me of the 1950s suburbs built in America. Towns like Levittown or the movie Stepford Wives! Interesting history where this type of housing comes from.
Me realizing that I did most of your tips! 💛 I also wanted to add that touches of gold warms up a gray space (gold picture frame, candle holder, curtain rod, lamp etc)
I am renting a grey box house lol. I have done everything you've mentioned! Warm wood accents, plants, rugs, wicker baskets, and curtains. Also if a renter don't underestimate the power if some peel and stick wallpaper! I did some feaux brick removeable wallpaper in my previous grey box apartment and I felt it added so much character.
This was the video I was looking for, but didn’t know it. I am renovating my home and covered all of my “rainbow” of accent walls with ultra pure white paint. It’s great, because the space is light and bright, but I’ve been looking for ways to bring in warmth WITHOUT defaulting to accent walls again.
We hired out to have our house painted a few years ago because we thought we were going to sell. It's ALL light gray. I abhor painting, so my lazy a$$ has found a way to keep the gray and warm it up with everything else. I'm actually really pleased with the results. Great tips!
Oooh! I just added two bamboo shades to my kitchen window and balcony door, just as decor, I don’t actually use them, because I felt the naked windows were too cold and needed a little dressing;) nice to hear that you also think this is a great way to dress windows:) I got my shades from Amazon and I a look so bought little fixtures so you can hang them over the window frame. No drilling required, to sticky residues, absolutely renter friendly.
Love this - I've been sharing your HGTVification of America video and the article and heard from people that it changed their perspective on "move in ready" and whether they even like a lot of these trends that signify "newness" but aren't people's taste. I recommended to a couple renting out a unit that instead of grey, which can be too cool and depressing, they consider painting an apartment white or off white and LETTING THE TENANTS PAINT. Imagine that!
I think something that really helps with cold white/grey homes is to change the shade of the lightbulbs. Warm lighting feels more relaxing and inviting, compared to cold white light
This is so timely for me. We're moving and planning on buying a new home. All the new homes are open concept and grey and white. Neither of these do anything for me. I prefer two living spaces even if they're smaller. I love to design but my hubby might be getting tired of painting. LOL
I found it especially interesting that you recommend adding warmth to a stark space by going in the opposite direction - I live in a one-room student apartment that's all-white (cannot be painted) except one raw concrete wall and warm wooden windowsills. I do really enjoy the look, and the white walls, floor and ceiling kind of reminds me of an island home and lends itself well to pops of color. I've also been trying to find a balance between creating warmth and coziness and leaning into the style of my space since I do personally really enjoy the more industrial, slightly 'sharp' look of the apartment and partly do want to enhance or express that. traditional/classic styles aren't really for me and I feel like they would clash too much with the style of my apartment but I definitely agree that elements like wood and some fabric are good ways to warm and soften up the space. for me it's definitely a process and sometimes a fine line between introducing elements that make me feel good, relaxed and at ease while slowly developing and being able to express my own style and identity. so for me, introducing more woods and some fabrics while not making everything wood and fabric and still keeping some metals and more streamlined elements! I also love decorating with natural elements such as colored ceramics, stoneware, glassware, marble, etc.
We painted every room in our house agreeable gray when we bought it in 2020 and oh boy do I regret it! I HATE the cool tone of everything and that is what I wanted to avoid, so I tried going with a more warm toned gray. I am itching to paint, but I cannot bring myself to take on that big of a project 😂 Thanks so much Paige for these tips!!!
I've been following for awhile and you've inspired me so much and have really helped me discover/hone in my style! We have such similar tastes. I too love that mushroom/pea/cream color!
The grey hued flooring reminds me work place, depressing to see at home. Grey wall is much easier to paint over but flooring is expensive to do over. Last year I chose Lifeproof’s Hardeman Oak, a light shade of untreated oak color for my whole house except baths and laundry. I am loving the warmth and realness of my flooring.
Re the huge rug: 8 years ago I bought a huge patterned rug at a resale shop (it was less than $300). I think it was made in India. And what you said is spot on--this is now the 4th place I've used it in (it's in its forever home now). When you slap it on the floor you immediately just feel like, AH that's more like it. I bought another big rug at Homegoods for my "dining room" and it makes such a difference. Homegoods is the best place to buy big nice rugs that are not $$$ imo.
I like the idea of taking so far off the wall I really like it when people put a table behind sofa and you walk up behind it. Maybe you could do a video where you talk about creating those small vignettes in home like you said a chair in a corner with a small table stuff like that with all bunch of ideas
I was just telling my husband that I am so tired of these open concept homes. I get the appeal in some ways but I LOVE rooms. Little rooms with little "moments" as you put it... like I don't want to cook and watch tv and eta dinner and even sleep in the same giant room!! I like getting away and tucking in somewhere. Haha
(Typing this prior to watching video) I use a bunch of light furniture to brighten up the room. Also nice pops of color help. Wood saves your life. Lighting is big also! Huge on the nice warm lights.
Today I was looking at an architecture book and thought of something I'd like to say. The examples of concrete in this video are indeed cold, but concrete can actually be a very warm material. There are many examples from other countries where concrete looks so good! But it has to be combined with warm woods and plants.
Loved this video. We're moving soon and will be buying a new home. I dread that we may have to buy a home that has gray walls. I will try and paint the walls eventually, but in the meantime, I love these tips for decorating a gray home. I love the idea of burl wood pieces too. Thanks Paige! Congratulations for hitting 100k subs!
I want any content you put out. Prop styling or otherwise!! But LOVEDD the new fb marketplace video. I’d love to see you do it and change your location to a smaller city and see what you can pull off 😊
This is exactly the help I needed! The apartment I'm moving into, let me know they were going to update some features before my move in and low and behold they layed down grey vinyl flooring in the kitchen against the green and yellow retro/art deco tiled counter and I had no idea how I would design my kitchen..so thank you Paige!! Will be taking all your tips into application haha
I know you love British design and have an inspiration suggestion or possible video idea. There are some 'boutique' estate agents here that sell amazing homes. I'm nosey so love having a look inside places I could only dream of ever owning- it's great for design inspiration! On the more modern side there is The Modern House (they also have a youtube channel) and on the traditional side they have Inigo, which I just discovered. I feel like you might enjoy the latter a bit more as the houses are more characterful and historical. I'd love to hear which one you would 'fantasy buy'
I went from having a flipped grey box (literally) to a green cottage with the fish gill siding on my gables in a creamy white. I wish I could post the pics because the difference is stunning.
such a helpful video! would love to hear your opinion on how to deal with modern furniture without getting rid of anything, like repaint, add something and so on! Im moving in a year and don’t want to splurge on big pieces, and my whole room is in ikea furniture
Some of my furniture is IKEA, largely because I can't afford to replace it. I don't know what Paige would recommend, but there are things you can do, depending on your style and which kind of IKEA furniture you have. My style leans towards English country/Arts and Crafts/Art Nouveau. The IKEA pieces I have are mostly from their 'Hemnes' range and have a good amount of real wood. For my bookcases, I painted them in a warm white. I also removed the plasticy looking fibreboard backs and replaced them with some cheap pine beadboard cladding strips which I stained in a warm oak colour. They hold some of my books as well as vintage items from family or local junk shops. I've also got a large chest of drawers which I repainted in a warm ochre chalk paint. I replaced the knobs with some white patterned ceramic ones. The top of the unit was solid pine so I sanded it down to remove the finish and expose the wood grain before painting it with a clear varnish. I actually sold some of my other IKEA items online and put the money towards some thrifted vintage pieces which I mix in with my remaining IKEA items. If it suits your style, the brush strokes and imperfections in the paint finish take off that 'mass produced' edge that a lot of IKEA products have. Painting or replacing any fake-looking particle board makes a huge difference, as does swapping out the generic IKEA hardware. There are other things you can do too, depending on your style, the pieces you have and the DIY tools and skills you have. I've seen people do interesting things with fluting, woven rattan and funky coloured paints.
Paige, I am just moving to a new build house with polished concrete floors and planned instaling bamboo shades and adding massive wood furniture before watching this video! It just needs a bit of balancing, not completely "demodernising". I am into the Eichler, Eames, Aalto type of houses and they just need to stay contemporary. I have a difficulty mixing greys with creams, just using white oak, acacia, black, olive, seafoam green and burned orange with my greys.

I love that you film in front of a bookcase. And that it's filled with books, rather than "styled" with trinkets.
Yeah my pet peeve is a bunch of random purchased junk on random purchased shelves that serve no purpose other than clutter :/
Not everyone likes to read and that's okay lol. There's nothing wrong with wanting to surround yourself with meaningful objects that spark memories.
Or grouped by color, or turned to face the binding away. Ugh.
Thats why i dont want to buy a bookcase, i dont have books, i dont know what else to put on my blank walls though

Do it bit by bit! You'll be fine :D
It's just paint. Paint it again.
Warm toned grey ????????? Another regret waiting to happen. Rip the bandaid off
@@Anthony_The_Disney_Guy I mean I know I can...just saying house projects can be overwhelming 🤷🏼♀️
As long as your FLOORS are not "gray".....because that is the major mistake in these 'gray boxes' Paige is referring too.
I've been following for awhile and you've inspired me so much and have really helped me discover/hone in my style! We have such similar tastes. I too love that mushroom/pea/cream color!
yay!!

I'm moving into a new place with the same dull grey tile floor EVERYWHERE, so this is exactly what I need right now lol
Whenever someone asks how large a rug they need, I answer that if it costs 4x what you thought you’d spend, it’ll be big enough.
You NEVER miss!!! And yes prop styling videos plz :)
Haha
I love, how you sometimes laugh at yourself! 😄 Very cute. ♡
I like the idea of bamboo shade for bathroom windows! ☆
hell yes to prop styling videos!!
About to move into a cookie cutter rental in a suburb. This video is so helpful and giving me some hope so thank you!
I’m about to move into a dull grey box apartment and I’ve watched this video so many times to reassure myself it doesn’t have to be atrocious
(Typing this prior to watching video) I use a bunch of light furniture to brighten up the room. Also nice pops of color help. Wood saves your life. Lighting is big also! Huge on the nice warm lights.
I would love to see some videos about prop styling and what it’s like!
I would LOVE prop styling videos!
Today I was looking at an architecture book and thought of something I'd like to say. The examples of concrete in this video are indeed cold, but concrete can actually be a very warm material. There are many examples from other countries where concrete looks so good! But it has to be combined with warm woods and plants.
Yes! Prop styling videos would be great. I've watched all your videos and everything you do is great ;-)
And those are great and easy to applied tips ! Thanks so much ! Take care of yourself during this 3 weeks Target assignment.
I definitely will be buying a tray to cover up some of my ugly 80s tile and grout countertop! Great advice 😊
You have no idea how much I needed this!! Thank you ♥️
Well done Sista! Thanx for the links, always helpful :)
Somoneessss about to hit 100k! , long overdue ! Here’s to 500k . 🎉😊 great suggestions in the video!
I have a gray floor and I do all of these!!! I feel so stylish!!! Lolz 😂
I want any content you put out. Prop styling or otherwise!! But LOVEDD the new fb marketplace video. I’d love to see you do it and change your location to a smaller city and see what you can pull off 😊
I love how you covered every ugly surface.
in love with the necklace today
just moved into a big gray box in dtla so this is perfect :)
Muji has nice wood trays, not so large, but good for small urban kitchen vibes
love muji
Love this video! Would love to hear about how you got into prop styling, created a portfolio, got your first few jobs, etc.
Paige can you please speak on seasonal decorations Halloween, holidays, etc? Luv u xo
Yes! Prop style videos please!
Thanks Paige for all these great tips!
Congratulations with 100k subscribers, Paige 💛🥳 your content is so great, i love you!!!
I went from having a flipped grey box (literally) to a green cottage with the fish gill siding on my gables in a creamy white. I wish I could post the pics because the difference is stunning.
Love your suggestions. Modern was an actual period from early 20th century to late 60s early 70s. Contemporary is what you’re referring to.
such a helpful video!
would love to hear your opinion on how to deal with modern furniture without getting rid of anything, like repaint, add something and so on!
Yes for prop styling !
I love your vidéos :)
thank you for this video! it's so good - I'm taking notes!
Yes to prop styling vids!!
Love your videos and kudos to your parents for hanging onto a copy of The Preppy Handbook (yes, the spine is that recognizable).
my mom lovvvvves preppy
Paige, I am just moving to a new build house with polished concrete floors and planned instaling bamboo shades and adding massive wood furniture before watching this video! It just needs a bit of balancing, not completely "demodernising". I am into the Eichler, Eames, Aalto type of houses and they just need to stay contemporary. I have a difficulty mixing greys with creams, just using white oak, acacia, black, olive, seafoam green and burned orange with my greys.
Warmething=warming. Love your vids.
This was a great episode
thank you!!
Can you do a video on your fave paint colours for bedrooms? I've exhausted my inspo xoxo
Great video, this is the one I’ve been trying to find for awhile, unfortunately there’s not many choices for apartments, this video has helped
I’m laughing at the title already when I get the notification 😅 this is gonna be a good one
