One needs to take diversion from Bhubaneswar and travel around 60 km to reach Puri. If you don't have a plan to visit Puri and travel from Kolkata to Bangalore/South India, then better to stay on NH16 and stay at Bhubaneswar or Cuttack or Rambha.
