Hi everyone! A number of you are wondering how I added the plan to the map. -I used a mod called Image Overlay 2, which you can find here (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2616880500). -I then found an image of the plan and spent a bit of time working to get the sizing right, cropping it to a square in my photo editor. - Finally, I used the plan to create the shape of the land on a map I found in the workshop. I HIGHLY recommend this mod if you're looking to take on a project like this!

The famous CPP triple-bookstore avenue :P Seriously though, great job, I'd be really interested in seeing more historical builds like this, especially if they came with commentary providing context and thoughts like this one did!
The game can be a bit like that... e.g. commercial districts that consist entirely of coffee shops. Though from my travels in North America, I can't say that's unrealistic...
The absolute highest compliment I can give this is that it felt like an interactive video in a museum. Informative and you get to watch something come to life before your eyes. I don't know how expandable this series is, but I would LOVE 10-30 min builds highlighting different influential city planners/designers.
Thank you!!! I had a few I was thinking about doing, but settled on this one. The next one I do will likely be a build in Europe that never came to fruition and would have absolutely desecrated a beautiful city. I won't give more away than that
Wow, great video! This is the kind of thing I thought of the first time I learned about Cities: Skylines... hope to see more! I'm happy to see that various mods have been developed to make this possible (or at least, easier). I'd also love to see a companion video to this where you discuss a little of the "how to", some of the alterations you had to do to make it work with the game, and a little about your thoughts on the original plan overall.
Long time listener, first time caller... I just gotta say, watching the first 1 minute of video at .25 speed, made me feel like i was looking over Gods shoulder at the end of the 6th day, when the final details are being laid out. The playback speed was slow enough to where i could follow the words and the build, and the song you chose, played at .25 speed, is otherworldly! It was like an alien choir singing my life story, at the end. That song at quarter speed 'ffed my brain up! Been loving following the builds. You've taught be a lot of best practices, and for that I thank you.
This was an incredible idea. Would love to see more of this type of build! Could this become a new series? Would love to see original city plans built or maybe bring ancient cities into modern times
Two. The second half of the video is a whole separate take. I put the original on Patreon, but it was missing shots due to realizing a mistake partway through allowing the simulation to run.
I couldn't tell that the text was changing because I was looking at the timelapse. Having it empty for a split second would tell me that it changed and I could focus both on it and the video
I absolutely love this. And I'm sure everyone who lives in Venice will love it too. Can't wait for the next historical recreation. (My only complaint is that I kept missing the text because I was watching the build. Why no voiceover? They're usually so Zen!)
Absurdly good! What a cool idea and what a fantastic city layout. That John Nolen was a genius! A far cry from what we often see today when it comes to urban planning. Great work CPP!
Now that you have the golf course mod, I’m thinking that you should bring that into CWC as that would fit in well with the area. The lore could be that some wealthy person bought up a lot of land to create their own resort and country club hidden away from the city.
whoooaaa I clicked on this video not expecting to see it was a city I have been to haha, don't recognize it well enough by the streetplan but I have been to venice florida many times. Lots of old people lol.
This is amazing! As someone who doesn't actually know a whole lot about city planning, or John Nolen's Venice Florida plan, but would like to, I would really love to see a video where you take us around this incredible city that you've recreated and talk a bit about some of the things in the design that you find particularly special and inspired you to recreate it. Maybe even stuff that isn't unique to his plan, but which you think are just... well implemented design elements. Maybe even some discussion of issues, criticisms, etc. You put so much work into building this, I'd love to know what inspired it!
so many years into the game, and yet another display I've never seen coming: Outstanding, thanks Wow, science meets arts! What a beauty! would be interesting to see the overall city stats by C:S... as far as traffic is concerned, it shows the efficiency of road hierarchy: no mass transit, no TM:PE, still good flow!
Thank you! I'll do a bit of cleanup and put the build on the workshop. I, quite unfortunately, forgot to save after allowing it to develop. I did save right before then, though.
It’s so nice to see a city that’s just a stones throw away from me get built from the ground up in city skylines. Your recreation of it was spot on! Thank you CPP!

Your dedication to realism is one of the main reasons why I follow this channel, but this is certainly a few steps beyond expectation. Thank you! One question though: I saw you struggling with getting the canals to actually carry water. Is there a reason for why you didn't use the ingame canal assets, other than getting the authentic look? Not complaining, just curious.
@@EphDis You nailed it. I would have had to try to find a custom canal and didn't want to stop recording since I was hours in at that point. In hindsight, I would have probably tried to find a custom asset to make this work. Terraforming just isn't fine-grain enough to make tiny canals work right.
I would like to know what the real city is, how they modernized, and do city planners plan with the intent that the community will change in unforeseen ways?

Best thing about Cities Skylines is the fact that it doesn't only feel like a game you play. It actually look more like a toy you make from the ground up only to watch it build itself after you're done with the plans. This is pretty cool.
They just started construction on a new low-rise apartment complex across the street from me (435 units + retail) and I can only imagine you narrating the video like this area is being _revitalized!_ Look at all these corner shops! So walkable!
As someone who has grown up in Florida their whole life, seeing this come to life and even learning a bit more on the history of my home state was really nice to see/learn. Wonderful video, CPP.
I started following this channel because I love both the game and your dedication to realism in it, but never did I think I’d see you recreate a 100 year old plan for the small obscure town I was born, raised, and have lived in for 90% of my life. It’s insane on how well preserved the city is today from the original plan. The roadways are practically untouched today and this section of the city is preserved as historic downtown. We call it the island because the waterway has been extended to completely surround downtown. It’s especially cool to learn that the land I went to high school on used to be a huge country club. You did an amazing job at recreating Venice, and it was super cool to see my hometown brought into this game. Thank you!
Would love if you made this into a series. Maybe even start a second series where you plan real cities the way you think they should look like in the future! Keep up the amazing work 😁
I started Las Vegas over a year ago and got one freeway done and gave up LOL. The map alone took me weeks to adjust even with pulling it from the internet. I love how this came together and the effort you put in.
I spent two weeks in Venice Florida dodging a hurricane out in the gulf two years ago in the little anchorage just in the inlet. It's actually a really nice town. Shockingly easy to get around via Onewheel. Not a bad place to find safe harbor!
I love the idea of taking old or new city plans, re-creating them in Cities Skylines to do a rough render of what it would look like. Mechanics/concepts might be slightly different from real-world but this was such an awesome video

This is really soothing. Living in the Philippines I realized why our traffic situation is really bad and that is because of lack of planning or worst no plans at all.

I have so many memories of this island, the parks, the library, the beach, my elementary and high school, parties at the jetties, boating down the Intracoastal to Snake Island, marching in parades down Venice Ave, sleepovers at a friend’s house. Absolutely incredible.
This was a very interesting video. Would be cool to hear your thoughts on it as a modern city planner. And how to get a map to overlay so I can actually try and build my home town.
I second this, I'd love to see a follow up on this city, also on how the plan translates into CS.
it's a mod but i don't have a pc but on console so idk the name.
i've seen it before with other yt'ers who do stuff
th-cam.com/video/SH84sRxBXL4/w-d-xo.html found this
Phil - I've been a big fan since Bluffside Crossing started, but this might be my favorite content from you, yet! Awesome idea that was executed perfectly, but we miss your voice! I'd love to see this become a series. Keep slaying it, king.
that was such a wonderful idea, and a great video in general! Even when watching it for the 2nd time I can still enjoy it ;)
Thank you, Will!!
4:20 I know this was a typo, but "Concern Venue" is just so poetic.
The famous CPP triple-bookstore avenue :P
Seriously though, great job, I'd be really interested in seeing more historical builds like this, especially if they came with commentary providing context and thoughts like this one did!
The game can be a bit like that... e.g. commercial districts that consist entirely of coffee shops. Though from my travels in North America, I can't say that's unrealistic...
It’s actually four bookstores! There’s one in the bottom right corner, too. 😂
@@ViserraTargaryen220
The absolute highest compliment I can give this is that it felt like an interactive video in a museum. Informative and you get to watch something come to life before your eyes. I don't know how expandable this series is, but I would LOVE 10-30 min builds highlighting different influential city planners/designers.
Thank you!!! I had a few I was thinking about doing, but settled on this one. The next one I do will likely be a build in Europe that never came to fruition and would have absolutely desecrated a beautiful city. I won't give more away than that
@@CityPlannerPlays Yesssss! Really looking forward to it!
Very well could become a new series! I really, really enjoyed creating this one!
@@CityPlannerPlays that’s the most important thing! Any chance we see something like this inside Clearwater county?
@@CityPlannerPlays I'd be incredibly hyped if we got the Olmstead plan for Tacoma at some point.
I love the idea of bringing ancient cities into the modern world. No matter what the signature of the series has to be the map overlay.
This is a total work of art! Seriously, wow. The production quality and content on this channel has truly become something to behold, Phil. Bravo!
Now, to the million dollar question. How many takes until you got it right?
Two. The second half of the video is a whole separate take. I put the original on Patreon, but it was missing shots due to realizing a mistake partway through allowing the simulation to run.
@@CityPlannerPlays I noticed the simulation ran for most of the first half. This was amazing though!
I'm not going to say much... but I have something written already.
I’ve been lobbying for a golf course on Verde or CWC and can’t wait for the lore
whoooaaa I clicked on this video not expecting to see it was a city I have been to haha, don't recognize it well enough by the streetplan but I have been to venice florida many times. Lots of old people lol.
This was so cool to watch…can’t wait to try this with my hometown. Need a tutorial on how to use the overlay 🤔
Yes, precisely!! A tutorial on how to use the overlay, please!!
We need to know! I've tried recreating real cities in my own time and failed miserably. That overlay would be a godsend!
YES! Exactly this
This is amazing! You put so much work into building this, I'd love to know what inspired it!
so many years into the game, and yet another display I've never seen coming: Outstanding, thanks
Wow, science meets arts!
Great video! Would love to hear commentary about some of the earlier planners and their contributions (good and bad!) to modern city planning too!
Thank you! More coming!
Wow this is one of your finest productions yet! I love hearing your voice and you walking us through each episode piece by piece, although, this video has a level of sophistication and elegance that I really appreciate a lot. It adds a nice, new and interesting tone to your pallette! Thanks for the videos and keep up the amazing work CPP :)
I know it might take longer but post-narration might work better than text, you have a calm voice :D
And NO massive highways to strangle it! well done.
It looked in the timelapse like one went in for a couple of frames, but it seemed to wide to fit
@@EphDis Ah, I must have missed that. Makes sense.
@@EphDis You nailed it. I would have had to try to find a custom canal and didn't want to stop recording since I was hours in at that point. In hindsight, I would have probably tried to find a custom asset to make this work. Terraforming just isn't fine-grain enough to make tiny canals work right.
@@CityPlannerPlays You should def name one of the canal crossings Nugget Bridge :P
I can still hear him saying, "under the roads.. where they are supposed to be!"
Great build... can you do a tutorial on how to use the image Overlay 2 mod on both a map in the editor and one that you’ve already started playing
Yes!
Great idea!
Looks awesome. I lived in Venice for awhile. Should do Sarasota as well but with the updated round abouts for 41 lol
I would like to know what the real city is, how they modernized, and do city planners plan with the intent that the community will change in unforeseen ways?
actually looks great!
Seems to be a very good plan as it comes to general layout and walkability, though single-floor buildings and Euclidean zoning should be a no-go.
11:20 Ah yes, I too like to look at the mountains down here in Venice, Florida.
THIS IS AWESOME , HOW DID U GET THE MAP OVERLAY?
Image overlay mod
@@1oVVa Thanks for the answer.
Added a pinned comment showing the process and I might put together a video showing the whole thing.
This was enjoyable to watch.
There is a huge lack of information on how to correctly do a map overlay in cities skyline. Please make a video segment or video to explain. Thank you! Always great work.
this yes please explain how this was its great, I try with second monitor and google earth. this is what i need
If I remember there might be a mod on the workshop for it. I think it’s either in the October or september showcase
@@fryreviews693 yes I remember what you’re eluding to but there isn’t a precise example or step by step clear process on how to achieve the map overlay goal correctly. And I’m hoping that city planner gives us a clear precise way to correctly apply the map overlay 🙂
@@Nicks949 yeah there's some videos about the image overlay mods but they're mostly focused on height maps. I really want to know how he got the image to work while he was in game to do the street layout. I've been trying to use image overlay mods but its just not working for me. I would love to see how CPP did this process
So, I absolutely love creating houses in the Sims based on real floorplans, and have loosely considered doing something like this before as a result.... this is AMAZING to see, just an absolutely awesome project.
Well... that was awesome! Would like to see some more videos like this one from time to time!
However you do realize that you set yourself up with this one, right? Now we know what you're capable of in the game when you really want to and you're gonna have to find some really good excuses for not making everything this pretty from now on! :D :D :D
... more of these coming!
I was born and raised in Venice FL! So cool to see my hometown in this way!
This was fascinating, would be interested to see more like this. Please do a tutorial about how to get that map overlay!
11:08 - The folks in this town really love their Books/Book Stores- there's some heavy competition there!
Very nice work!
Can’t wait to watch this on my break today!! Looks magical ✨
No words. 😍
I work for a natural gas/ fiber optic company and seeing you place the pipes right under the roads really adds that little detail of realism
i love how precisely you followed the plans, getting all the districts and small details right must have been quite the chore.
This is amazing! I’d love to see more content like this - well done!
This was truly amazing and I'm happy that I randomly found this on TH-cam!
I spent two weeks in Venice Florida dodging a hurricane out in the gulf two years ago in the little anchorage just in the inlet. It's actually a really nice town. Shockingly easy to get around via Onewheel. Not a bad place to find safe harbor!
wow, what an effort. Great to see you giving Nolen the place on your channel he deserves. Great build!
This was beautiful. Mesmerizing to watch. Great job CPP!
I love the idea of taking old or new city plans, re-creating them in Cities Skylines to do a rough render of what it would look like. Mechanics/concepts might be slightly different from real-world but this was such an awesome video
this was so cool to see the overlay of the actual plans as you made it in game. a lot of work goes into creating these plans and it is so great you got to share one of the ones you liked in this game.
Great to see the original plans to Venice coming to life. Great episode
This is absolutely flawless. Your attention to detail and presentation is immaculate. It'd be awesome to see you recreate more plans from reality, an entertaining watch from start to end!
Omg! How did you do this?! You need to do a tutorial on how to grab real world areas on Google maps and place into cities. I have a project I've been dying to do!
This is really soothing. Living in the Philippines I realized why our traffic situation is really bad and that is because of lack of planning or worst no plans at all.
This was an amazing video, I genuinely enjoyed seeing you bring to life an old city plan that was never fully used. I'd love to see this added as a series to your other CS series as well.
there are canals in the workshop, just fyi. they are also difficult to use, but better then quays in some applications.
This is really fantastic to see. Great concept! I'm amazed at how effectively a 20th Century paper plan for a real world city translates into a working plan for a 21st Century game. Well done.
Over 1 million views! Very nice cpp!
Watching your videos makes me realize how freaking gorgeous that design from 1926 was. The symmetry!
Very fond memories driving down John Nolen Drive in Madison over Lake Monona. That view is priceless!
I found this absolutely mesmerizing and fascinating. I would love to see more of these, not only was it really cool to see a real-life plan come to life, I really enjoyed the history lesson along the way. I've found your commentary about integrating real world city planning into your builds to be interesting and would love to be able to learn about more major planners and history of city planning in your videos!
I've been binge-watching CWC and Verde Beach since I came across your channel through TH-cam (I don't play Cities: Skylines), and I'm hooked up since. I have to say that this was my new favourite video, what a fantastic idea.
It's great to see Nolen's influence on your gameplay and awesome to learn a bit of history at the same time. I would love to see this becoming a series.
The mix of real life history & city skylines is a match made in heaven
The best content ever. From a urban planning student at UNT, thank you!
11:05 I like to read but even I think 4 bookstores in one block is a bit much.
Just AMAZING!
I'd really like to see videos like this in the future,
Or Cities progressing like they did overtime with Roads, and such!
Or Maybe with Existing Cities and their plans.
Good job CPP!
WOW! This is something else! After watching this I immediately loaded up my city and demolished everything, and then just lay landfill sites end-to-end as that is all it is compared to this masterpiece!
Superb work Mr CPP
Wow! This is like a mini-essay and research-creation at the same time. I love this!
