  • A look at the works of the great Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer in conjunction with the Rijksmuseum's 2023 exhibition. Wonderfully narrated by Stephen Fry.

this is the cleverest documentary I've ever seen. The view with hundreds of Vermeer's painting then pulling out particular examples and examining each for differences and clever devices that Vermeer used..what an incredible genius Vermeer...Good job, Mr. Fry!

Vermeer's exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam sold out after just a few hours. I would have loved to have been able to go. There is, however an amazing permanent exhibition at the Vermeer Centre in Delft, showing a chronological reproduction of every known Vermeer painting. It is so exciting to find all the recurring parallels and props Vermeer repeatedly used again and again in his paintings. The chair, the gown, the earring, the window, the floor, the Turkish rug, and sometimes even the same models.

Vermeer's famous "Girl Asleep at a Table" of 1657, was sold in 1696 in Amsterdam. It was later called "A Drunken Sleeping Maid at Table".

In the Netherlands in that time period, it was the common fashion to cover tabletops, dressers, etc, with fine carpets instead of tablecloths.

You can still see 'carpets' on some tabletops in the Netherlands.

Some of the script is a bit childish. But pointing out some of the details in each of the paintings is nice.
