I think my English is bad, but I know I want to learnt it, not to study it. I can't wait to see at least one full movie every single day in English. I can't help myself, it's stronger than me, I am addicted to hear English. If I hear US English I can feel butterflies in my stomach. Just by Listening English I made a big progress. On the other hand my spoken English is terrible.

Hi! I’m Adriano, from Brazil and I’ve been studying English for more than 6 years now, so I do have some experience. However, when it comes to watching movies in English it’s not easy. I’m a bit lazy to watch movies in English, but I know I need to. I watched one last week and I could understand 60% - 70% of it, which made me feel so happy!

Thanks for this video. I regularly watch The Tonight Show and I'm trying with Breaking Bad (yes... again but this time in English and without subtitles), and still have a problem with my listening. I can't find the answer, even after watching this video... I can understand all what you say, I can understand others when having a conversation with me... I can understand a conference or a class. But when I watch a movie or when I try to listen to the news, it's like OMG! I feel like a beginner.

Man, I've been practicing listening for a year now, I have about 500 hundred active hours+ I've no clue of passive hours hahaha (I've been listening to all things in English), I can easily hold full conversations with natives about a bunch of different topics, from day-to-day situations to Psychology, even watching you and other youtube videos at 1.5/2.0 playback speed, I struggle a lot when it comes to movies and songs. I'm tackling this now, but It's sad this reality, music is a complete different beast.

I have one problem, and I was hoping you can reply to me, or make a video about it. Sometimes, it is very difficult to comprehend academic texts, especially those complex, really advanced-level ones. Can you give some pieces of advice concerning how to better comprehend and decode the meaning of such texts, please? I would really appreciate it.

Nowadays everybody can improve English or even another language with internet. I've been studying English through lots of different ways! I put in my mind that every content in English could be a useful material, so I can't simply leave it to gain time. I intend to visiting the USA one day so if I really want to experience that I've got to force my mind to get every single word I've not absorved yet. So I'm here to increase my knowledgments in English... and of course I'm trying to share my experience with you guys without any translater. Finally I would like to thank you, that unfortunately I can't remember the name yet, and to congratulate you for your job. Keep it up! Best wishes!! Bye!

I have been following a few topics on YoutTubefor the last year or so and feel like there is really nothing that can surprise me anymore in terms of the language. Then I watched part of The Big Bang Theory Episode and seemed quite clueless about the jokes used in the series. I had to stop th video, look up some of the phrases, but even then I was still clueless about what the f that was supposed to mean and why that was funny. When I follow politics, philosophy and other topics on TH-cam, if I don't know an expression, looking it up in a dictionary is typically all it takes to help me understand what they mean. In these series of movies, the meaning is often so subtle that looking it up in 10 dictionaries doesn't help and it makes me just give up. This used to be my worst frustration back in the day when movies served to improve my English. I used to force myself to look everything up and often went out of my way to nail down all these obscure cultural jokes. Now I find it much more comfortable to follow a specific topic, which I follow for a longer period. All the words typically start making a lot of sense to me and even new expressions are easier for me to pick up as it makes a lot more sense to me when connected to the topic. I can pick up on the subtleties of expressions within the topic a lot better than in the movies, where they suddenly throw some obscure expressions or jokes at you and there is just very little you can do to pick up on these subtleties as it often goes deep into culture, which I have no chance at understanding. The series is translated in my native languages and frankly, a lot of these deep cultural jokes are butchered and don't even find them funny. Sometimes the background laughter sounds really awkward as there is no laughter coming from my direction as a response. Now, looking at my first sentence, it might be a little hyperbolic, but nevertheless, gets my point across quite well.
The solution might be, if you really want to learn English through movies, to simply ignore the subtle jokes and focus on what you understand, however, if they are used too often, you may want to choose a different series, or just learn the words directly linked to the main theme of the movie. If the main theme is relationships or love, follow just love expressions and idioms, for instance, but ignore the jokes about food or popular culture references. It then puts too much strain on the brain and you might experience a burnout quite soon.
Sorry for typos, but there is some kind of bug in my browser most likely.

I usually use my favorite TV series and movies. And I try to watch the same episode 3 or 4 times. The first time without subtitle. The second time, before watching it, I try to read the transcripts of the whole episode and understand everything. After that, I watch it one or two more times without subtitles again. That's it! I guess repetition is the key.

It's natural. People's natural conversation is just noise, noise and noise. In the movies, music or any fictional contents, you need to be grammatically correct or more eloquent for people to understand you. If actors in movies or TV spoke like people in daily life, nobody would understand what they say and people will turn off the channel. Movies dialogue is conversation is heard from the outside while people's daily conversation do not need to be exact and correct because everyone can see the speakers. If you hear the daily conversation of people from the outside perspective, you won't understand any while you can understand movie's dialogue even though you're not their friends or you have never met them. Movie's characters' role are guiding audience to understand the stories. More variety of words, idioms, slang are being employed to have some rhythms so the audience can naturally fit into the stories. If people just hear the noisy conversation like daily life in the movie theater, people will be confused and cannot follow the stories. If daily conversation require only about 100 words in minimum, movie dialogue sometimes contain 5,000 to 10,000 vocabulary and idioms depending on the subject of movies.
