UPDATE:1 year and still cranks within the first 2-3 pulls. Probably will buy another when this one finally does bite the dust th-cam.com/users/postUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX . No issues at all. Very happy with it.UPDATE: After 6 months of use and over 70 uses I would still highly recommend this pressure washer. It does vibrate a decent amount but never had it “walk” like others have mentioned. No oil leaks, still seems to run like the day I bought it. Still cranks within 2-3 pulls every time. Very happy with my purchase!Have used it about a dozen times now. Plenty of power, cranks up on 1-2 pulls every time. My only complaint would be I wish it was a little taller to make it easier to walk with it (hits my ankles a lot) and that the two hose connections were a little further apart but it hasn’t caused me any issues. Seems to run a good 1-1/2-2 hrs on a full tank, overall a well built machine and definitely worth the money in my opinion.

Last week I trash picked a Troy-Bilt self-propelled mower with that same engine on it. I cleaned the fuel tank and carburetor, replace the spark plug, washed and waxed the machine and sold it the next day for $225.
Yesterday I trash pick this exact pressure washer you have in the video. I've not yet even pulled the Rope on it. No matter what is wrong with it I'm sure I will turn a profit with it. I can't believe people just throw these things away. But I'm definitely glad they do.

The black nozzle is for spraying just soap and water at low pressure - used for presoaking. Great video!

I just picked up 5 pressure washers from NorthernTool. $25 a piece. Originally $300 brand new. Started cleaning up and cleaning carburetor on the first one this weekend. Put everything back together and fired right up. Used it to wash my truck. 4 more to go. Good return on my investment.

Well low and behold Nathan, this is the exact same thing that happened to my Troy-bilt today. Except mine is a 190CC B&S. A gosh darn plastic crank gear!! The governor came completely apart. The cam wiped out just like yours. Excellent video btw. edit: cam p#-694039, T-gear-797521, slinger-796650

I have a similar Troy Bilt Briggs and Stratton Pressure washer with very similar pressure, and I had to replace every single o-ring in the pump and manifold, also ended up replacing all of the chemical injection parts, but after around $50 of work it runs again, and shall serve us for another 10 years is the hope.

Great video! It was very interesting watching someone go through their troubleshooting process in a pretty logical manner. I'm an IT dude by profession and use similar skills when diagnosing and fixing computer systems [and other small electronics]. Maybe one day I'll break down one of my small engines to see how things are put together. 😊

The EPA 2012 exhaust emissions standard is the EPA rule that states all/certain small engines built BEFORE 2012 must comply with the emissions standard BY 2012. These laws and regulations are usually written many years earlier to give manufacturers time to make needed adjustments to ensure they are within governmental guidelines before a given date. So, this engine, build in 07/10 was already meeting whatever regulations that are explained in the EPA 2012 EES.
I hope that makes sense.

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have the water on and hooked up and the trigger pulled when starting a power washer.

That pump IS on. The hose hookups are part of the pump and you can clearly see them when he starts it. He will burn the plastic up inside the pump running it without water hooked up. In the beginning, you can see the black thermal relief valve but that doesn't do you any good if no water is hooked up. The thermal relief valve is for when the water is hooked up, you are not squeezing the trigger, and it begins to overheat. Then the relief valve opens up and dumps water through it to cool the pump.

Those sell for $279 at Lowe’s. The current model is 2800 psi. You still got a good deal, though.

I bought a 2200 psi p.w for £40 with a broken bearing as a cheap project. Took it apart today to see the extent of the damage . Turns out the piston was seized and the bearing was fine. Bit of WD40 and a few wiggles and it fired up first pull . Total cost of zero to fix 👍

Awesome vid Nat! Ignore the haters on here, they are just miserable creatures and can't be satisfied no matter what. Who cares what the guy told you he paid for it, you my friend got a great deal with a little work and minimal money! I do the same thing, find it, fix it, then sell or keep it. Most of the small engines I come across are carb related problems that a few hours and less than 10 bucks usually solve, never had to replace a gear yet, but looks really simple! Thanks again!

This is what I enjoy doing also, giving old junky stuff a new life. You would be amazed the stuff I find that people throw out and is still fixable. People just give up on fixing stuff way too easily these days.

I am convinced i won't need to buy about half of what I used to ever again because of all the used items i find and fix, about 1 per week, I figure i should aim for saving 100$ per week, or $5,200 per year, or $156,000 in the next 30 years! that is a lot of money if you know how to fix things, people will argue that time is wasted, but learning how to fix things is my job, so i get better at my job at the same time, and knowledge is power, I have people ask me every week to fix things at their houses, income for life
@@robanderson84 Absolutely. This summer I am going around the house fixing stuff and it's all using items I have found that are still in good working order. Fixing stuff for free where before it used to cost me a lot. "Knowledge is power" as they say.

This was an excellent video. The sound and picture quality were great. And you narrate everything. I've seen so many videos where some guy can barely speak proper english, Doesn't know what anything is called, And has absolutely no clue how to investigate a problem. This was very enjoyable to watch.
I have the 3000 psi version that i bought in 2008. We use it for roofs, houses, decks and after 11 years it still runs strong with the original pump.
(i clean it after every use)

We got one for 70$ once, the owner bought it new, used 2 or 3 times and then never worked again, we took out the carburetor, cleaned all the holes and the jet, now it starts every time with one or two pulls only. The machine later on started to eat oil like crazy, it needed to be filled every time it was used, or else it wouldn't start, the problem was fixed after I added a bit of marvel mystery oil, runs great now.

I'm sure someone said this already, but I would guess the reason the gear is plastic is so that it fails before the stress is translated into the motor ... there by breaking something more significant; good find!
Good job Nathan! You explained everything very well and had the video to compliment it. I would have liked to see exactly what was wrong with that gear, but I'll probably never have to do it so it's a moot point. I learned a lot and appreciate the time and effort you took to make the video to help others with similar problems. Ignore what some of these people say. You did a selfless service and it's appreciated.
It appears that the gear has a keeper molded into it. Since it is all plastic, the keeper sheared off rendering the engine useless. if Briggs went back to all metal gears then this engine would probably have lasted forever.
@Nathan Rohrbough, thank you! I just got one of these curbside and this will be the first small engine I ever work on. I'm hoping that it's just the spark plug and maybe the carb needs to be cleaned. Also, the gas cap was broken so I ordered a replacement. Wish me luck!

I did the same thing only I got a Craftsman 3600psi with 4 tanks for chemicals and 6 tips for $20, not running. Bought a new carb on Amazon for !32 and it started on the second pull and runs great. Looks and runs like a new one. SCORE
Chances are you could have taken the old carb apart, cleaned it and it would have run fine too. This crap they sell us a gas these days can't be allowed to sit in seasonal equipment like this without gas stabilizer in the take and carbs when put away for winter.

If you plan to pressure wash a large, flat surface such as a sidewalk, look into the possibility of getting a 12" diameter cleaning head. They have two revolving nozzles inside and will cover a large area in a very short time. You have to move it slowly back and forth, but it will clean very well. I found mine that a neighbor tossed out, but Home Depot sells them for around $70.00.

Advise: Never have a power washer engine running with no water running through the pump. Hook water to the unit then pull the trigger on the wand to let water flow through it. After that is successfully working, then start the engine. Running the engine with no water hooked up to the pump will burn the pump out pretty fast. Otherwise, terrific fix on the timing gears.

Great video Nathan! My pressure washer also has a pulsing governor when running, but not pulling the trigger, my guess is to prevent overworking the engine against a dead headed pump? Pretty interesting to see your troubleshooting and logic applied in diagnosing the issue.Thanks for the effort.
mine did this on my Troy Bilt pressure washer until I turned up the idle adjustment screw. Also, it runs smoother with NGK spark plug vs the no-name China one it came with in the carb replacement kit.
If there was a metal gear in there maybe those people who sold it for $20.00 dollars would still own it and it wouldn’t be broken.
Bingo! Plastic gears are cheap to manufacture....had nothing to do with nobly trying to protect other parts of the motor. CHEAP, CHEAP, and SHODDY manufacturing. Reminds me of my discovery of plastic gears in a grinder I bought at Harbor Freight. Imagine, plastic gears in a grinder, but even worse in a motor!
@@d1gardner you are "supposed" to only use it 3min and then let it cool down 5min - usually - who ever uses stuff like this....

Release the wand handle make sure you get water running through and pressure off the pump first before starting always or damage to pump will happen.

I picked up a Generac 2500 psi at 3.0 gpm with a 6.5 hp Briggs electric start for 100 bucks! Sweet deal until i got it home and hooked it up to the hose. Water was just spraying out of the pump housing full blast, bummer! I pulled the pump off and discovered the pump had blown up, it had a huge hole in it and the parts inside were in pieces. When I bought it the guy started it up but conveniently didn't have a water source but the Briggs ran great. On to AMAZON to find a pump which i did find a good one (a Homelite) that was rated almost like mine, 2800 to 3000 psi and 2.5 gpm 119 bucks free prime shipping.
AMAZON delivered it right to my door and I proceeded to install it. I had to take the quick disconnect and put it on the new pump and installed a new 3/16 key, 4 bolts and we're ready to go. We hooked up the hose, bled the air out of the line then started it up! "WOW, FULL BLAST LIKE NEW" I hope the idiot that screwed me has some bad ju-ju!
After a little education browsing AMAZON I realized you could buy a Predator 6.5 hp for 99 bucks and a pump on AMAZON for another 99 bucks plus or minus so for about 200 bucks you can build a new basic pressure washer of descent quality for cheap. Of course that doesn't beat your 20 dollar deal but you knew it needed work, I got screwed out of 80 bucks right off the bat and had to spend an additional 119 dollars compared to your 20 dollar deal plus a few bucks for good parts. But, we both made out OK.

Nathan...nicely done Sir!! The first thing I do when I get something 'new' like this, is to go on-line and obtain the owners manual as well as the engine manual. The black nozzle, I believe, was not doing very much as it is the soap dispensing nozzle. Use of the other one does not usually allow the pump to draw from the soap tank (I could be wrong but that is how mine works). I do not think you have a governor issue...when there is water going into the pump, the engine will act like that but will run great when you start spraying. $58 dollar investment, plus your time (I do not count my time on things I am keeping and learning from) equals an extremely good deal!! You are correct about the black nozzle....it's just for soap dispensing and washing. You're also correct about when water is being drawn into the pump, the engine will run better (it's not a governor problem).

Paid $329 for a Husky 3200psi/2.8gpm from the Homeless Despot almost 10 years ago. I've replaced the pump 3 times...my wife forgets to turn the water on before starting it. Pump rebuild kits are pretty cheap so I keep a spare kit handy. You can't beat the GX160 on the Husky, it just keeps running so long as normal maintenance is done on it.

I just bought the exact same pressure washer used and not working a few weeks ago. On mine the pump was toast, but after I replaced the pump, the governor came apart after about 10 minutes of running. I, too, took a surprise trip into the bottom pan, but that was pretty simple and about $25 of parts later, it works like a champ. I've yet to sell it, but I plan to, as I bought 2 broken pressure washers at the same time and I decided to keep the other one.

@@whodatboi1543 Look at the time 37.30. 37.45 even better view. There's the pump high-pressure outlet in plain view below the engine. maybe a few seconds you may get away with it.
It probably says on the instruction tag he showed not to do that as well.
If the gears were metal that would've happened. I have a 1968 homko tiller with a 4hp briggs thats still going because it wasn't built to fail.

I was given Honda powered unit with twin soap/rinse tanks, a shattered pump and missing nozzles. All of which have been remedied. Do not try and transport on the attached wheel system over non-putting green lawns.When tilted back to move. the ground clearance is insufficient and the detergent / rinse agent tank valves tear off the tanks. It's easier jack up the house and turn it around. A great unit for all round

If your talking about the pulsating, it's probably a dirty carburetor jet.

You called it a car washer...I had to chuckle. :) It's a pressure washer! :) And a darn nice one, too! One thing, though....NEVER run the motor without the water line hooked up and running! You could potentially burn out the pressure pump. Just thought I'd mention that for ya. :)

i looked this up on Amazon..it rated 2/5..even though you got a great deal it was not surprising there was no compression..good job on resurrection..please do a follow up in a year after use..
