I wasn’t expecting that at all! Very pleasant sounding and catchy.

This is a great pop song but the real treasure for me on this album is the 21 minute title piece, it’s one of my all-time pieces of music.

Totally, “Crises” is just brilliant. The whole album is very good, but the main title is sublime. ❤

Loved it since the 80s but only recently realised the name probably originated from the ‘sea of crises’ on the moon.

I have the 7" vinyl sleeve of Moonlight 🌙 shadow signed by 3/4 musicians who played on the record! just missing Mike Oldfield.
    Phil Spalding - bass 🎸
    Simon Phillips - drums 🥁
    Maggie Reilly - vox 🎤
A beautiful yet tragic record about love/loss.

Yeah - you've jumped 10 years from Tubular Bells missing 6 studio albums, a double live album and numerous singles which would have showed his progression from Side Long instrumentalist to 80's pop song candy! but it doesn't matter too much.
This is from "Crises" - Side A is one long instrumental (with a handful of vocals here and there) and the climax has a phenomenal drumming backing by Simon Phillips - and Side B is a mixture of Songs and short instrumentals. This was Mike's preferred album structure during the 80's until the seminal "Amarok" in 1990. 1 x hour long piece of music constantly changing and evolving yet totally captivating and incredible.
There is a great "Extended Mix" of Moonlight Shadow which is worth checking out if you enjoy this shorter cut.
The following year Mike & Maggie released "To France" from the album "Discovery". Not so well known but just as lovely. Again there is an "Extended Mix" of this also.

To my knowledge he didn't even finish Tubular Bells either. He only did side one. Sacrilage!

And Barry Palmer songs in “Crime of Passion”, “Poison Arrows”, “Tricks of the light” and “Discovery”. Those are some nice songs, very well sung.

I can't believe I'd never heard of this song, but I really like it. I just looked up Oldfield's wiki entry which left me both amazed and a bit disappointed.

"Crises" is a very good Mike Oldfield album. I saw a concert from the album tour in 1984: excellent - with a huge drummer Simon Phillips. The latter started with Pete Townshend and Adrien Snell... Then it was Mike Oldfield then the Who from 1989 to 1991 then Toto ... The title "crises", one side of the record is also a great success. Thank you for this choice and analysis.

Fun trivia fact - on the video of the song, when it was a hit way back - Pierre Moerlen is playing drums, but, of course, they're all just pretending, like true MTV!

Maggie Reilly did the backing vocals on the Sisters of Mercy album Vision Thing also worth checking out some of her solo work she was also on Oldfield's other albumns QE2 and Discovery, the single from that album To France has since been remade by several Euro-Metal Artists like Leaves Eyes etc. Love the guitar work on this song and Simon Phillips on drums cant get any better. Also Simon Phillips was the drummer on the Buffalo Skinners album before Mark rejoined Big Country, and you can see Mark drumming in the back of the She Sell's Sanctuary video by the Cult. Mark also workewd with Tony Butler on Roger Daltreys Under a Raging Moon, and Mark and his brother worked on Midge Ures first solo effort the Gift which helped spawn the David Bowie cover b-side of The Man who sold the World which was used most recently in the Metal Gear Solid V game.

I have incredibly strong memories of this as a young child in the early 80s... not all of them pleasant. Was playing in my head when mum took my sister and I for a walk around the block at night after she and my dad had a huge row. The full moon was out... a strange memory, I'm sure, but still...

Well, it was the 'Virgin' label that urged him to approach these commercial tracks with short vocal songs! He wasn´t lucky about that and so at least enforced that he was allowed to take also an about 20min instrumental track on each album in that period . He also printed that in at east one booklet of some album about "so everyone can be lucky - the label and myself!".
In his youth in the age of about 15/16 Mike played with some friends in London folk clubs (so he once also mentioned folk guitarist Bert Jansch as one of his influences) - and his mother was of Irish descent! So these determined the celtic influences you can hear in several tracks of his opus

Dude you've moved straight onto Moonlight Shadow (a great but very commercial song) before finishing the awesome Tubular Bells. Sacrilage! Nice video though.

You must have a listen to side one. A single song and quintessential early 80's prog.

Great track but you should probably check out the entire album because its bloody brilliant and a real showcase in music production. Main track Crises is one of my all time favorite pieces of music of all artists.
