"Draw everywhere and all the time. An artist is a sketchbook with a person attached." (Irwin Greenberg) Thought you might appreciate that quote. Great video (all your videos are)
Great video! My daughter is 4 and I really enjoy drawing with her and having her join me in videos. I look forward to having a relationship that grows around art like you have with your son.
Man, Tate is super talented!! He has a really funny sense of humor too in his comics, that Cool Dog one made me laugh out loud. Seems like he possibly watches some Adventure Time!
Didn't notice your Ummms and I'm a Speech Pathologist (and Illustrator!) I was too focused on the great CONTENT of what you are saying! Love your work :)
+Jake Parker I like the point your son made about playing video games...only for me that sense of me wasting my life playing games came when I got married, lol. My wife never said that to me but I often felt guilty when I did play because I could have used that time to draw or finish pieces. Now that my ps3 is dead, now I have no excuse, lol.
I like the juxtaposition of your style with your son's style! You're both really inspirational to me. I kinda want to do stuff in my sketchbook the way Tate does - just letting loose and doing a mess of smaller doodles that fill the pages. That'd probably make drawing even more fun for me.
Brian Riff I used to do that, where I would like the look of something in someone's sketchbook, try to recreate it in mine but then I wouldn't keep it up or like it, maybe you can but I say find something you can do that you like
I love both sketchbooks, your son is soooo talented! You can tell he is going to be great and I love that he doesn't feel obliged to create a finished piece because that's what it's all about! ☺️☺️
"You don't want crappy paper floating around" ha ha That was me in middle/high school xD. I wish I had a sketchbook in those years I probably would have kept most of my drawings from that time. I now work in a Pentel Nature sketch but sometimes I make my own sketchbooks as well. Keep at it dudes! :)
There's nothing wrong with wasting tons of time playing video games. Often times video games inspire us to create. It's fun to be both a creator AND a consumer. And besides, if there were only creators and no consumers, then no one would consume anyone's art, because everyone would be so busy creating. I don't know if that makes sense? I kinda do this sometimes. I like to make comics, but I don't actually read other comics. I rather make my own. BUT the problem with that is if everyone thought the same way, no one would end up reading anyone else's comics, because everyone would be so busy creating their own, and thus the whole purpose of comic making would be meaningless because there would be no one to read them...
Thank you for sharing your sketchbooks and insights! I always love seeing the thought process of other artists. I tend to gravitate more toward Tate's "exploration" style of sketching--my sketchbooks are typically filled with anything from sketchy unfinished scribbles to more rendered/inked drawings. I went through a period where I was worried that if I didn't have only finished, beautiful drawings in my sketchbooks, I'd somehow loose my credibility as an artist if people would happen to look through them. But then I realized that a sketchbook is what I do for myself, and for my creative and personal artistic exploration. I now feel the most comfortable and relaxed in my sketchbook--knowing that I am drawing for myself rather than for the approval of others. It's a very safe place for me. Jake: I liked the bit about your "first page" in your sketchbook--how it's easy to feel pressured to make an awesome drawing for the first page (I've struggled with this!) Tate: I love seeing all your exploration and comics--you've got those punchlines down pat! Thanks again! :)
Your son has a lot of potential, I hope he keeps drawing and doing the things he loves to do! His father is an amazing artist and could help him along the way!!!
Jake your art is so inspiring, and your sons art is amazing, also very inspiring. Nice to see a comparison in your styles. Your drawing of Kylo Ren in your previous video is my favourite drawing from you by far and ive been following you on instagram and youtube for quite a while, thanks for uploading and inspiring me to stop procrastinating and get stuff done!
Thank you for this video. I have been subscribed to your channel for quite sometime now but never really watched your videos. Haha go figure. Well this one for sure has helped me. I am a struggling artist trying to find my niche and someone to look to for some guidance. I wasn't able to take any formal art classes in high school because I was always too busy with band. I look back now and sort of regret that decision to do music instead of art, but my Senior year I started in Drawing II and then was moved into the AP Studio art program where I grew leaps and bounds. After coming home from my mission, I found a renewed inspiration and have been trying and fighting like crazy to break out and get my name out there. My wife and I are in the process of writing a comic book ourselves and I am trying to get my name out there so that I can stop working for the man and start pursuing my own dreams and my talent that I have been given. I didn't go to art school so do you have any advice that could help me just start doing it? If that makes sense? haha I know it won't be easy but I am ready to go full steam and see where it goes from here. Thank you for posting these videos and giving me a renewed sense of hope and inspiration. If you'd like to, if you have time, you can check out some of my work on my instagram page. It's kinda what I use as my ever changing portfolio. instagram.com/caludwick/
I love your son's sketchbook! There's a really big difference between how you both go about drawing in both the types of things you draw and the styles. It's really interesting and I love when people show off their sketchbooks.
Back when I was in high school I was drawing in every class, I would finish all my assignments and draw, my teachers wouldn't stop me because I was way ahead of the class even when I wasn't I would still draw you couldn't stop me😂
I cannot sketchbook. I cannot sketchbook for the life of me. I honestly Have trouble starting drawings in my sketchbook and sticking too them because I'm too scared to have bad drawings in my book... I'm studying to be a concept artist and after seeing the sketches that professionals like Fheng Zhu create it terrifies me that as soon as I try to draw whatever is in my head that I can't do it... Usually composition and my ugly sketching is the cause... I'm thinking about just picking up a cheaper moleskine style sketchbook and slowly start expanding from what I'm comfortable in drawing to what scares me
Maybe try getting a super cheap sketchbook or one of those notebooks with blank pages? And then just stick your drawings in them. Then you can just slowly start drawing in it while still sticking in the drawings and just start drawing in it more and more?
Maybe try using leftover paper and notebooks around the house to sketch to start off with, instead of getting new sketchbooks, to build your confidence? I've been drawing in my school lined exercise books since I was a kid, so that made me more comfortable transitioning to a blank sketchbook. Because it felt like I was "upgrading" to a better material as I take myself more seriously as an artist, instead of thinking it's too precious to waste.
just don't worry about the quality. If you just draw without focusing on how bad or good it is you will get better without even noticing it. Your own fear holds you back the most; and that's the beauty in a sketchbook, it's just practice and random doodles, you don't have to be afraid, it doesn't hold any value to anybody in the world but you, and that means you can put anything you want to in there and not be afraid to mess up
You inspire me everytime! I am crazy about my scetchbook, and I can't stay a day without it...the creative phase is always the best part of any project!
As a former middle school teacher (and occasional high school teacher), I find this conversation between Jake and Tate to be so heartwarming: One generation collaborating with the next! Rock on, gentlemen!!
Slightly flawed opinion of there being producers and consumers and it being better to be a producer. I do agree to some extent, however if there were no consumers out there to consume our creations, we wouldn't be able to make a living for ourselves as self employed artists. I'm a freelance artist and gamer, and i game as much as i draw, ain't no biggy, games fuel my imagination
+PixelPerfect28 Yeah, after editing this together I wish I had gone into that more. We need consumers and producers in order to have a healthy creative ecosystem. And producers need to consume and consumers need to produce. But when you're speaking off the cuff sometimes things don't come out of your brain fully developed.
I wouldn't worry about it too much Jake. My comment was just me being pedantic, I knew what you were getting at. I found myself wanting to see some of your sons art work though, maybe in your next video.
+PixelPerfect28 There will always be both, i think what he was trying to say was that if you had a choice between video games and drawing, drawing would be more productive
+Peter Weir Plus this video is made for artists with the intent of encouraging them to draw more. I don't think he's saying producers are good and consumers are bad. It's more like, if you have the goal of producing art, then be active about it instead of passively consuming. Work toward your goal, don't stay static.
Keeping your sketchbooks around is great because it lets you see how much you've improved from the past. You also are able to appreciate the new abilities you've acquired over time keeping you a humble artist and look back into things you might have forgotten about. It's a nice memorial to keep as an artist that keeps record of your interests and abilities :)
Hah! "..get this spaceship out of my system." Good one Jake! Love the sketchbooks as always and love your t-shirt too. I am enjoying my Sketchwallet, although I haven't used it as much as I thought I was going to. I'll have to remedy that. I think it's great your son is following in your footsteps. He is of course very talented already. I like to encourage my children to draw as well, it's something we can always do together. Love your videos, keep it up!
The first time I ever really used a sketch book to learn things, I must say it was an awesome experience. I think everyone who loves to draw should use a sketch book at least once all the way through to try out new ideas and learn new things. You will grow a lot.
I use the same method as Tate's. I use A4 printer paper and spiral bind it with black cardboard at the ends. I normally don't like thin sketchbooks though, so I usually make them contain 100 sheets of printer paper. It can take up to 7 months to finish one, though I think that time can definitely be improved to be shorter.
I love the relationship you have with your son, I wish my parents and I shared a similar hobby to bond over. I'm definitely subbing, I've been in a art rut personally, and this was a pretty big inspiration. Thank you so much.
I dont think video games are a complete waste. They increase creativity and for me give me inspiration :) But yes there are times where you should being doing something else more productive ;p
Jake, Tate, and all the commenters bring up some good points on the use of video games for producers and consumers. I only play games on the weekends after around 6pm as a rule, but I feel like they're still important to stay inspired and relieve stress. Then again, I'm a senior in college doing capstone classes, so nothing really makes sense to me right now anyway in terms of consumption and production lol.
I'm one of those people that uses loose leaf paper. There are two main reasons 1)I'm left handed so most sketchbooks annoy the heck out of me because of the division/gutter between the two pages (spiral bound are the bane of my existence) and 2) If I'm going to make my sketches look nice and clean I usually need to redraw them. And to save time I do that by tracing them onto a new page using a window, since I don't have a light box. That is hard to do with a book. On a different note I really like those drawings of the robot chess pieces.
I would disagree with the producer and consumer part because with production comes consumption. With that consumption comes more production, in a way, of sharing opinions and maybe even a point of view on life. What would be the point of producing if there were no one to consume in some sort of way?
Just been checking out more of Tate's comics on his tumblr and he has a great sense of humour. He also draws better than me and he's younger than me too! *cries in a corner*
I always start my sketchbooks backwards, it takes the pressure out of it. Also a sketchbook for me is where I try to develop my life drawing skills, I will draw from my imagination as well but I've always viewed the purpose of them to be a place where I could improve my observation skills and build up my own reference material because I hate using photos.
I just got a Moleskine Cahier large size pack!!! I decided on those instead of a classic sketchbook or plain notebook because they are light and thin(not extra large... I wanted to be able to carry it around and take it to school) and although they are minimal and kinda nice at first they aren't the nicest of sketchbooks so I wasn't as scared to dive straight into the book! I also got the book with the cardboard cover (mostly because it kinda reminded me of the Field Notes book) and the cover can be drawn on easily and erased
First of all, cool kid. And it's awesome that he's following the "tradition", that he likes to draw and all. Love that. I don't keep a sketchbook anymore. Well, kinda. I have an unfinished one, but I resorted to the "stack" because it's easier for me to throw away anything that I might not like. But I have to find a place to put them in. A folder or something. EDIT: Oh, right, I could put a wire on them! Silly me. EDIT2: Jabba's little dude's called Salacious Crumb. The name comes from "shoe laces". True story.
Super fun comics. Makes me wanna start a kinda daily comic project. Didn't we all use to draw little epic castle war scenes at some point? I drew many ninjas.
wish i saw this 8 years ago when i was 14 myself :,) good thing u put out that many videos over the time because they are my daily content and motivate me to put in the work and improve myself
just wanna say I was listening and watching while doing some artwork of my own... and when I saw your idea of chess robots... I wanted to tell you how awesome that idea is... my favorite might be the pawn gang and the queen, but I like them all... also... I truly appreciate your work... you are very inspirational to me as far as getting back into drawing after many many years... thanks Jake
Jake, I love your drawings of houses. Can you show us more of the sketches you've done that focus on house drawings you've done? I feel like the houses in a fiction say a lot about the world. And I was wondering how you came to developing the style of houses we see so much of in your drawings. Thanks man! Love the work.
I came back to this video after so many years and decided to pull out your recent Spaceships book and you showed the blue ship at 15:55 I turned the page to that exact one. Very cool coincidence.
Wow, really nice little video... Might actually be my favourite to date... Both sketchbooks were amazing, wish I could have drawn like that at your boys age for sure... Love how honest the whole piece was. Really nice
Tate's work is fantastic! Very impressive for his age. I like how he does a ton of tiny drawings for figuring out characters and expressions, I might have to steal that technique ;)
Great video and awesome that you brought your son on board. His character designs and comic strips are already great! He has a bright future ahead of him if he wants to keep going with it :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts on sketchbooks, very motivating and inspiring to see you work! :)
That castles from your son sketchbook are super good , super tiny... Super good =) many little stories... I love it... It reminded me how we play with my schoolmate , some thing like tiny doodle wars on paper , our drawings was not so good as your son's, but we draw the armies of this little ones... that was great... Thanks for this reminding =)...His sketch book is great...
I bought an A4 sketchbook, and it strangled my hand! My natural scale is a little bigger. Currently I have a spiral-bound which I use back to front, because I'm left-handed. Love the George Lucas venn diagram - thanks, Jake ☺
I thin its really amazing that your son also likes to draw and draws everyday! Wish i had someone artistic around me when i was his age! Keep up the good work, both of you :)
Tate's art reminds me of Adventure Time. I haven't watched much of it, but I know that Tate's stuff in this sketchbook has a similar style. I struggle with drawing every day. You guys are an inspiration to me to keep at it anyway. :)
awww you're both so amazing, I smiled the whole time watching the video, so interesting to see both of your art and style yOU'RE GREAT!!!!!, and also a huge inspiration, thank you very much!
first of all. lovely to meet you Tate! ^^ (just keep drawing. you're amazing! Jake you should be proud of your boy!*damn!*) Second. jake! make that collab with Skottie Young happen (eventually) PLEAAASEEEE :3 thats would be the most amazing, adorable, badass comic ever!!!
Love getting a glimpse into you and Tate's sketchbooks. Great stuff. You oughta post that 'pin up' from 9:29 with the characters from the potential JP/Scottie collab. Would love to get a better look at that. Cheers!
You can find a sketchbook thats very similar to those moleskines at Daiso. They're 50 sheets (100 page), blank khaki cover, and are about 7x10". Only $1.50. They're called kraft notebooks.
I see a proud father :)
What are you doing here Vexx😁😂
Lmaooooo you thought jake was going to give you a heart🖕🖕🖕🖕

And to save time I do that by tracing them onto a new page using a window, since I don't have a light box. That is hard to do with a book.
On a different note I really like those drawings of the robot chess pieces.
Tate's so talented at just 14!!! I hope he uploads his works. His style is already SUPER appealing, I hope we get to see more!
+Lily Claire he's sixteen now and posts on Instagram: instagram.com/robotatertotcomics/
A sketchbook could also be a form of diary
yeees, you express so much of urself
Teresa Webster it help with thoughts like no joke my sketchbook is just how I feel and I've grown as a woman with depression but I can cope ^🔻^
Its more personal than a diary in my own opinion
I also got the book with the cardboard cover (mostly because it kinda reminded me of the Field Notes book) and the cover can be drawn on easily and erased
tate's got quite a style.
your son is so talented and confidant
so proud of you guys
keep sketching for a long long lifetime together^^
I drew many ninjas.
wish i saw this 8 years ago when i was 14 myself :,)
good thing u put out that many videos over the time because they are my daily content and motivate me to put in the work and improve myself
OMG your son's comics are so funny haha amazing Tumblr!! :D
Thanks for the video, it's really funny :)
just wanna say I was listening and watching while doing some artwork of my own... and when I saw your idea of chess robots... I wanted to tell you how awesome that idea is... my favorite might be the pawn gang and the queen, but I like them all... also... I truly appreciate your work... you are very inspirational to me as far as getting back into drawing after many many years... thanks Jake
I watched the tail end of the video with my son, we love his sketchbook (and yours, of course). Great video.
Jake, I love your drawings of houses. Can you show us more of the sketches you've done that focus on house drawings you've done? I feel like the houses in a fiction say a lot about the world. And I was wondering how you came to developing the style of houses we see so much of in your drawings. Thanks man! Love the work.
Omg😂, you guys are so awesome. And your son's style looks like it will make a very successful cartoon show. I love this and cool dog is hilarious.
Really nice
OMG Tate's sketch book!! I looooove his comics. I always keep up to date with them.
Really inspiring to see you AND your son Tate. Thanks both of you!
Fantastic work and sketches-- very inspiratonal, Jake. Please do more videos on these, and try other media and larger sketchbooks!
Excellent video, great drawing, Junior !!! Well done!
Your son is very talented!!! I wanna see more! Love every character and doodles =D
thats awesome. I LOVE YOUR SKETCHBOOK AND YOUR SONS!!!!
Tate's art reminds me of Adventure Time. I haven't watched much of it, but I know that Tate's stuff in this sketchbook has a similar style. I struggle with drawing every day. You guys are an inspiration to me to keep at it anyway. :)
You guys are truly talented! I love your art and doodles
awww you're both so amazing, I smiled the whole time watching the video, so interesting to see both of your art and style yOU'RE GREAT!!!!!, and also a huge inspiration, thank you very much!

I have started keeping a sketchbook, but I also have a now 15 lb portfolio of my older works with slightly newer works.

Love getting a glimpse into you and Tate's sketchbooks. Great stuff. You oughta post that 'pin up' from 9:29 with the characters from the potential JP/Scottie collab. Would love to get a better look at that. Cheers!
"You'll waste your eye out"
You can find a sketchbook thats very similar to those moleskines at Daiso. They're 50 sheets (100 page), blank khaki cover, and are about 7x10". Only $1.50. They're called kraft notebooks.
