Thailand election: Move Forward's Pita claims victory over parties backed by army

  • Thailand's two main opposition parties agreed on Monday to form a ruling coalition after the Move Forward party came out on top in the general election, a major blow to military-backed rivals that have controlled the government for nearly a decade.
    Pita Limjaroenrat, Move Forward's party leader, did a victory lap in Bangkok on Monday where thousands of supporters had gathered - some in the streets, others on rooftops.
    Limjaroenrat has proposed an alliance of six parties that would command 309 seats. That would be short of the 376 seats needed to ensure he was elected as prime minister.
    Move Forward was galvanized by a wave of excitement among the youth over its liberal agenda and promises of bold changes, including breaking up monopolies and reforming a law on insulting the monarchy.

      As a Thai, I'm grateful for your statement because the whole world knows that 250 Senetors has been setup for the military junta government. Pita and the coalition parties need only 67 votes from the Senetors to become the next PM.

      Senators should have their own opinion cause they are supposed to be specialist in each field. Move Forward arent the majority of the voter they are not even half, This constitution isn't kind of winer take it all but got to listen to every groups and compromise if the other parties can join together and become more than the number of Move Forward seat. Then Senator got every right to support that side too if they see fit. If Move forward is that good, the other parties would have joined them already. The party that hard to work with and also trouble maker none of the sane party will ever join them.

    Pita is the only hope for change in Thailand. We were so proud of him when we heard his victory after the election. However, the mood is swinging here because the huge obstacle is the old conservative senators that interfere with the vote for the prime minister in the parliament. They strongly support the conservative, not liberal, party. We are now so scared that we will be robbed the victory. We love you and we voted for democracy, Move Forward Party!!!

      That's the next thing when Pita become a real prime minister. Now all the 250 senetors and military party seems to be hanging by a thread. You will definitely see Thailand in a different way for sure. Thai people are qualified enough to compete with the 1st world countries but the government doesn't support them.

    As was pointed out. The PM is chosen by the Combined House and Senat. The Senate's 250 votes are appointed by the military. Winning over 60% on the elected seats may not be enough to win the PM. Fingers crossed for democracy.

      Countries like Thailand, Burma, Indonesia, Cambodia, etc. are all "fingers crossed" 2nd and 3rd world countries that are "democratic" in names only. The military rulers could take power ANY time they feel like it. This is what happens, when military leaders & autocrats run societies and not the other way around.

    the Thai Senate appointed by the military reminds me of the composition of the Indonesian parliament during the military dictatorship of General Suharto, in the 1990s, out of 500 members of the Indonesian parliament, 100 members are military representatives and appointed by the military

    • @poonakanwanaeloh7858
      @poonakanwanaeloh7858 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is we have 250 members of the upper house appointed by the royalist military. Although this time democratic parties have earned around 310 seats in the lower house consisting of 500 seats, which is more than a half but still they couldn't form a government until now. Don't you think it's weird ? It's because 250 members of the upper house have the right to vote for a prime minister. So, the the royalist parties of the lower house don't have to be the majority as they have 250 votes from the upper house in their hands, readily to support them. Which is sad.

    • @clarktexto
      @clarktexto ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poonakanwanaeloh7858 Yes, I know that's very sad, cutting the voting rights of Thai civilians, who account for more than 99% of the total population, instead only get 66.7% of parliamentary seats. For some reason, Thailand, which was lucky to have a democratic constitution in 1997, chose the old and outdated Indonesian way. CMIIW, the majority of Thailand citizen support the 2017 constitution through a referendum, where this constitution requires all members of the Senate or one third of all members of parliament to be appointed by the military. I don't know whether the results of this referendum are credible or not
