  • With game gears in their current state needing capacitor or screen replacements, lets build a new one out of 2022 parts!
    We'll be using a SYF mainboard utilizing the BennVenn display.

    My go to with soldering TQFP components is by first just flooding the pins with solder and then going over it with soldering braid, but this looks much easier!
    For that game port with the plastic spacer it might be easy to remove with a desoldering pump, but not sure if that would melt it too.

    • @retro-af
      @retro-af  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im sure a desoldering pump would be fine. I was pretty aggressive with the hot air station.
      A braid would work too (if youre patient)

  • @matzeisawesome

    At 8:00, you can see that the image output is larger than the case frame. Is that pixel perfect?
    With the scaling modes you can adjust the size to the case, but then it is no longer pixel perfect, right?
    PS: Well done. I' ve been looking a long time for a video that shows exactly this.

    Did you know that the Sega Game Gear lasted longer in North America than in PAL and Japan. The system discontinued in 1997 abroad, while here it lasted until the Game Boy, long thought to have "massacred" it like all other portable competition, was succeeded by the Game Boy Color and eventually the GBA. BUT!!! The Game Gear technically didn't lose, because while its lifespan is still shorter, even more so abroad, this is still a monumental sign of Sega's much more stronger American fanbase. While Japanese in origin, Sega consoles were American, preceeding Microsoft's Xbox.

    • @nexusmods9068

    Its weird that there isn't a mounting bracket provided and that you have to trim ribbon cables to make it fit. This is a really good idea for all those cap ruined game gears though

    • @wwband1
      @wwband1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The new kits come with an exact length flat cable. I had to custom order those so it took a while 😅

    • @retro-af
      @retro-af  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bennvenn provides a mounting bracket for a regular sega game gear.
      The custom bracket was for a new SYF game gear and is offered! I just print my own with ABS plastic.
      The trimming of the ribbon i agree with.

    Why does the speaker sound crunchy?

    • @retro-af

      I use an oldschool, 90s test bench that i know works for the game gear before i introduce the new sound and power boards.
      doesnt sound good, but it tells me if we are backwards compatible. 7:54 is using the new sound board, while the others use the test bench.
