Miguel appeals to me specifically because in this franchise full of characters who have extremely specific and extraordinarily well trained martial arts techniques and styles, he is the one guy who literally has no martial art style whatsoever that just swings his arms around wildly like a madman. Miguel is that guy from every 90's-00's anime that gets rocked by the main character at the beginning of a random episode only he's a playable character. I kind of love it.
He's always a strange case to me. He's a street thug, but not your drunk-in-the-alley street thug. He utilizes the reach of his limbs and raw power, and it's effective because he knows where his punches will hurt and cripple the most. Definitely experienced, just untrained.
Paul 1 through 3 was a threat. Tied with kazuya in a match outside of Tekken 1, lost to kuzuya only after Fighting him for hours in Tekken 1, went undefeated in three, beat ogre, and left beacuse he thought he won. Even in 6 kazuya States he was a pain in the ass to fight.
Paul actually beat Ogre in Tekken 3, he just didn't finish the "set" (if that makes sense). My headcanon is that he got DQ'd for leaving early (considering Ogre was yet to transform, no idea why is it tied to the tournament), otherwise Jin's victory doesn't make sense at all.
I think that's just the story that Tekken 4 actually goes with. It's the reason he's so run down in that game, because after bitterly goin on about how he should've been the champ, people got tired of him and his dojo flopped as a result.
Marshall Law was always my fav, but then Lydia Sobieska came along and I just fell in love. Love her background, love her gameplay. I REALLY hope they bring her back in 8 at some point!
Crazy how many stand out characters Tekken had. Glad to see Bob pretty up there with Feng, Lei and Law, I understand alot of why ppl dislike bob and how he was pretty dominant in tournaments but to me Law, Lei, Bob and Feng fit the role of Hollywood martial artists having similar philosophy's they practice like the big stars Bruce Lee, Jacky Chan, Sammo Hung and Jet Li
As an Asuka main, I felt that disappointment of her taking more and more of a backseat to the main story in my soul. Still so cool and fun to play but god I wish she had more to do than just be annoyed at Lili.
Asuka is sadly just “Wasted Potential: The Character” I remember when she was being hyped up as a distant relative of Jin’s and we all got hype over what her connection would be and what her encounters with Jin would be like. And would she give us clues about Jun? And then… nothing! She doesn’t even seem to be aware of it, despite the same last name. Hell, even Lili knows more about Jun than she does. Like… really? I’d argue she was done more dirty than Jin was throughout his arc.

She has a rather tragic backstory, reasonably decent lore-relevancy despite her few appearances, and with that is arguably one of the most determined and fierce fighters in the series. She didn't care If she had to face THE Heihachi or THE Kazuya, she just straight up went for it. She was practically insane lol. Throwing Tomahawks at her opponents, elbowing sumo wrestlers 10 times her size and making them spit out blood ... She truly was and still is outstanding amongst the female characters to this day imo 🤷🏻♂️
I like Miguel because having hispanic characters that aren't lucha wrestlers (I like 'em don't get me wrong) is rare, hearing the language represented is also cool.
Miguel is one of my favorite characters. Being Hispanic it's cool to just smash people as someone who sort of looks like me. He might be a jobber, but he's a pretty cool jobber. Tekken really does have some sick characters.

Mokujin, an actual punching bag. Well, training dummy turned to be real. Bland, but honestly the coolest idea for a random character I've ever seen. It's literally just the model for the characters, but given a wood look. It's brilliant! Also, Gon is GOAT. Tekken Ball was fun with him.
Cool list, but whoever made it not only forgot Azazel (who you ended up entering yourself), but also the secret mid-boss of Tekken 6 - the big robot that shoots missiles that break the floor and kill you instantly. Also, they forgot Kinjin (IIRC), which is Tetsujin but made of gold. I believe he's originally from Revolution.
Shaheen being put 2 tiers above Miguel is wild to me Granted I think Shaheen is kinda cool I just hate his "we have Miguel at home"-ass motivations and feel like they could've just done _way_ better on that front Like I remember seeing someone say something about how it would've been cool if he was like an oil mogul or something and he and his company came in to try to take down and absorb the Zaibatsu and G Corp and I entirely agree, even if they kept the "ouhh Jin kill my sibling I anger" part that would've made for a really cool character but as it stands his nothing truly must burger for me
Also while I have the outlet I wanna say I was highkey way disappointed the Law they put in 8 wasn't Forest Like I like Marshall as much as the next guy but I think if the Law they showed in that first trailer ended up being Forest that would've been such a cool direction for the character to go, and I feel that giving that style evolution to Marshall instead p much means Forest just could not be as interesting gameplay-wise and will forever be stuck as just "we want Law in this game but not Marshall" which sucks

Despite many having a problem with Jin's personality change, it does make a lot of sense lore-wise: He (apparently) lost his mother at 15 and was later betrayed by his grandfather, someone who trained him and someone he thought he could trust. Finding out about his heritage (which he vehemently despised undergirding more depression) and the danger his devil blood potentially posed to the world spurred him into the course of actions he took.

Jin waged war (Tekken 6) to fill the world with Negative energy so he could awaken Azazel and kill him to erase the Devil gene.. didnt succeed and Zafina sealed it away in her body. Miguel is the embodiment of peoples suffering during the war basically.. Don't know if this would change ur tier of them but there you go
I won't tolerate the Wang Jinrei disrespect. You repsect the WANG! Many of the Tekken cast themselves know from personal experience or by adopting many of his techniques. Even One Expression Feng acknowledged the man and that dude don't listen to nobody. Orge (the based GOD of fighting) went around emulating different fighters and took a ton of Wang's moves including the legendary Waning Moon throw and the Blazing Kick Gotta call deep fried cap on calling someone with that much clout a jobber. Some of the fan favorite characters all have ties to him (Jinpachi, Lee, Xiaoyu, Feng, Michelle, etc.).

5:13 Ogre's the odd one out among Tekken's supernatural beings. The devils and whatever possessed Jinpachi were explained but in Tekken 3 it was just "an alien fighting god appeared from nowhere and attacked people."
The woman in the blue jacket, in the "don't know them" tab, was planned to be included in Tekken Mobile game before the game was shutdown. As far as I know, she was supposed to be similar to Hwoarang, a South Korean, and a taekwondo expert.

I feel bad for the tekken 7 characters. Claudio is so damn fun to play but doesn't really do anything in the story. Shaheen looks cool but feel kinda incomplete moveset wise and does less than nothing in thr story. Gigas and Katarina have a story that go nowhere and is probably wont ever be back. Leroy is so cool and his story in the anime was nice but he came out so overpowered and easy to use that he ruined that game for 3 months and even the winner of EVO Japan who won with him asked for him to be nerfed so its hard for some of us to care for him. Fahkuram was cool but has no story and came out overpowered. Akuma and Geese were awesome editions but everyone got tired of seeing them in top 8 because they were insanely strong (Geese's stage is still fucking incredible). Lidia had a reason to fight but no story. Negan was a cool idea for a guest but he'll only be remembered for his stage. Lucky Chole had hints of being a cool character being an asshole to Eddy but no story besides that (she is weirdly fun to play). And Josie....exists. Her entire story is she beats the shit outta Kuma. Its a shame since many of them are unique and fun to play. Tetsu and Shadow made Claudio look amazing. AK's amazing Shaheen made him not look boring. Jeodding and Kaizer did some incredible stuff with Chole. There was so much potential for something for them storywise but they got virtually nothing.
I've always been a Tekken "fan", but I've never really known the lore of the series particularly well outside of the Mishima v G-Corporation plot. There are SO many characters that, and this will sound like heresy (and is also not true), seem so same-y to me. I love the designs of characters like King, Asuka, Jin, Lili, Xiaoyu, Paul, and a few others, but SO many others feel like filler (which is a problem I have with KoF characters). I think I should just spend a week on Wikipedia and arcade modes with a bunch of characters across all the games before 8 hits. Side note, Matt's content is always so great when it comes to fighting games. He loves his characters and his series, but he's more playful about it, and I don't get that sort of "hardcore" or "edge lord dudebro" vibe from anything he does.
Similar to KOF(idk if you know any of the story of that series) Tekken characters have a lot of interconnecting bits of lore. Actions being taken because of others and the like. That's what I love about Tekken it, in a way, forced me to care about more than just the characters I play because they have a rivalry going on with others or a connection in some way with others.
My top 10: Devil Jin,Heihachi,Kazuya,Nina and Anna Wiliams,Brian,Hwoarang,King,Reina and Victor.All guest characters can be only jobers at best for me,there is lot of generic characters in Tekken cant even remember they name,and i play Tekken since 3rd game.
Raven is a very underrated and unique character indeed, but to do very good with him you need to play very risky, because many of his moves end in his backturn where he's very vulnerable, you need to be very versatile and unpredictable with him, I mainly use him because he resemble Naruto characters in his fighting style and because of his unorthodox approach, for me he's B+ and maximum A in the right hands of use in the Tier List, because he's the type of High Risk-High Reward character. ☯️ 🤷🏻♂️
There's a lot of factors to consider before i could even try making this list. if i would take it seriously. one thing that doesn't leaving my mind is Ling Xiaoyu's Tekken 7 default costume. that is perfection, i haven't played her since that one time in T3.
I imagine the disclaimer at the beginning was absolutely necessary after a very few number of specific incident(s). I'm guessing most viewers are 99% indifferent about the sequence which is the correct response to have. Feng's sick because his character is so straightforward and refreshingly honest. He's not a tragic figure or an evil mastermind, he doesn't have some grand external goal of world domination or external power of any kind. He wants to be as personally powerful as possible and has no qualms about doing bad things to gain strength. It helps that he has a unique fighting style (unlike fauk who shares muay thai with bruce and such).
Azazel was the leader and mightiest of the fallen angels who came to earth with the Watchers, whose actions led to the flood of Noah. He taught mankind the arts of warfare and violence. His story is most fully recounted in the apocryphal book of Enoch
These fallen angels also interbred with mankind, their unholy union producing the 'Nephilim', who were incredibly evil and powerful. I wonder how much in depth the writers behind Tekken's lore are in understanding the origins of a character like Azazel - or if they just Googled a cool-sounding demon name. Nonetheless, the existence of a 'Devil Gene', originating from Azazel, which causes humans to gain wicked supernatural abilities is suspiciously similar to the 'Biblical' account. I wonder if Ogre is supposed to be a different fallen angel? He obviously has some sort of connection to the Devil Gene (though never fully explored in the series before being dropped entirely). Or maybe he's one of the earliest 'Nephilim' - making him in a way an ancestor to Jin and Kaz, lol. I mean, both Heihachi and Kazuya were trying to get the pendant to awaken Ogre way back in T1 and T2 - before Ogre even appeared as a character officially.
@N.i.E.M.O It had occurred to me as well that the Mishimas are descended through a very powerful nephelim bloodline. Of course, the writers (or the inspiration that dictates to them) will not outright say that, but it seems to be encoded in the Tekken narrative for those who know the "mythology"

I think the costume Jin had that I love the most was that sick white flame on his Karate gi pants in Tekken 5. Looked razor sharp in my opinion. I really got into playing him when I picked up Tekken 6 personally. I just had a lot of fun with him there. And in Dark Resurrection on PSP too.

King is my main, i beat a fairly high leveled competative player with him once. It took me quite a few tries but i'm still kinda proud of it.

5:13 Ogre's the odd one out among Tekken's supernatural beings. The devils and whatever possessed Jinpachi were explained but in Tekken 3 it was just "an alien fighting god appeared from nowhere and attacked people."
The woman in the blue jacket, in the "don't know them" tab, was planned to be included in Tekken Mobile game before the game was shutdown. As far as I know, she was supposed to be similar to Hwoarang, a South Korean, and a taekwondo expert.

This is a really solid and fair list! Only thing I disagreed with was Miguel's placement being one rank too low, but everything else is explained and reasoned well, personal biases aside. I'd really enjoy seeing more character rankings!

I feel bad for the tekken 7 characters. Claudio is so damn fun to play but doesn't really do anything in the story. Shaheen looks cool but feel kinda incomplete moveset wise and does less than nothing in thr story. Gigas and Katarina have a story that go nowhere and is probably wont ever be back. Leroy is so cool and his story in the anime was nice but he came out so overpowered and easy to use that he ruined that game for 3 months and even the winner of EVO Japan who won with him asked for him to be nerfed so its hard for some of us to care for him. Fahkuram was cool but has no story and came out overpowered. Akuma and Geese were awesome editions but everyone got tired of seeing them in top 8 because they were insanely strong (Geese's stage is still fucking incredible). Lidia had a reason to fight but no story. Negan was a cool idea for a guest but he'll only be remembered for his stage. Lucky Chole had hints of being a cool character being an asshole to Eddy but no story besides that (she is weirdly fun to play). And Josie....exists. Her entire story is she beats the shit outta Kuma.
Its a shame since many of them are unique and fun to play. Tetsu and Shadow made Claudio look amazing. AK's amazing Shaheen made him not look boring. Jeodding and Kaizer did some incredible stuff with Chole. There was so much potential for something for them storywise but they got virtually nothing.
I've always been a Tekken "fan", but I've never really known the lore of the series particularly well outside of the Mishima v G-Corporation plot. There are SO many characters that, and this will sound like heresy (and is also not true), seem so same-y to me. I love the designs of characters like King, Asuka, Jin, Lili, Xiaoyu, Paul, and a few others, but SO many others feel like filler (which is a problem I have with KoF characters). I think I should just spend a week on Wikipedia and arcade modes with a bunch of characters across all the games before 8 hits.
Side note, Matt's content is always so great when it comes to fighting games. He loves his characters and his series, but he's more playful about it, and I don't get that sort of "hardcore" or "edge lord dudebro" vibe from anything he does.
Similar to KOF(idk if you know any of the story of that series) Tekken characters have a lot of interconnecting bits of lore. Actions being taken because of others and the like. That's what I love about Tekken it, in a way, forced me to care about more than just the characters I play because they have a rivalry going on with others or a connection in some way with others.

My top 10: Devil Jin,Heihachi,Kazuya,Nina and Anna Wiliams,Brian,Hwoarang,King,Reina and Victor.All guest characters can be only jobers at best for me,there is lot of generic characters in Tekken cant even remember they name,and i play Tekken since 3rd game.
Raven is a very underrated and unique character indeed, but to do very good with him you need to play very risky, because many of his moves end in his backturn where he's very vulnerable, you need to be very versatile and unpredictable with him, I mainly use him because he resemble Naruto characters in his fighting style and because of his unorthodox approach, for me he's B+ and maximum A in the right hands of use in the Tier List, because he's the type of High Risk-High Reward character. ☯️ 🤷🏻♂️

To me they are like the same character story wise. Jin kills Miguel's sister, kazuya kills shaheens "friend". Miguel fights like a drunken bar fighter, Shaheen does like...weird MMA surfing stuff. I just don't see where your finding appeal in Shaheen when your not finding it in Miguel? They got about the same story presence..but I personally find that at least Miguel has some personality at least

The way I didn’t know Miharu and Asuka were two different people until this week.
Feng's sick because his character is so straightforward and refreshingly honest. He's not a tragic figure or an evil mastermind, he doesn't have some grand external goal of world domination or external power of any kind.
He wants to be as personally powerful as possible and has no qualms about doing bad things to gain strength.
It helps that he has a unique fighting style (unlike fauk who shares muay thai with bruce and such).
I saw where Raven is Canadian but his organization seals the nationality of all of its assassins from public record.

I wonder how much in depth the writers behind Tekken's lore are in understanding the origins of a character like Azazel - or if they just Googled a cool-sounding demon name. Nonetheless, the existence of a 'Devil Gene', originating from Azazel, which causes humans to gain wicked supernatural abilities is suspiciously similar to the 'Biblical' account.
I wonder if Ogre is supposed to be a different fallen angel? He obviously has some sort of connection to the Devil Gene (though never fully explored in the series before being dropped entirely). Or maybe he's one of the earliest 'Nephilim' - making him in a way an ancestor to Jin and Kaz, lol. I mean, both Heihachi and Kazuya were trying to get the pendant to awaken Ogre way back in T1 and T2 - before Ogre even appeared as a character officially.
@N.i.E.M.O It had occurred to me as well that the Mishimas are descended through a very powerful nephelim bloodline. Of course, the writers (or the inspiration that dictates to them) will not outright say that, but it seems to be encoded in the Tekken narrative for those who know the "mythology"

I think the costume Jin had that I love the most was that sick white flame on his Karate gi pants in Tekken 5. Looked razor sharp in my opinion. But his badass leather jacket in Tekken 8 is nothing to scoff at either. I'd personally put Bruce higher but just because he's one of my mains. I really got into playing him when I picked up Tekken 6 personally. I just had a lot of fun with him there. And in Dark Resurrection on PSP too.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds Master Raven really god damn cool. I remember when she was revealed and the reception, at least as far as I remember, was lukewarm at best. Of the T7 newcomers she was always far and away my favourite next to Lidia.
